SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,213, dated May 8, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, ALEXANDER W. BRINK- ERHOFF, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ointment-Injectors, of which the following is a specification, and in which similar letters refer to similar parts in the drawing, making part of this specification, and in which the figure is a perspective view of my device.

This invention has relation to ointment-injectors for treating rectal ulcers; and it consists in the improved article of manufacture hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to inject salve or ointment into the rectum and to deposit it at the mouth of the rectal ulcer as one of the agents and means of curing it. The adjustability of the ring and varying distances of location from anus of the ulcer enables the deposit to be made with exactness as to locality.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe it more fully, as well as the manner of using it.

A cylindrical hard-rubber tube is made of any desired length and from threeeighths to half an inch in diameter, with a screw-cap on its rear end, through and against which operates or moves the piston-rod provided with a closely-fitting forward end to till the chamber in the tube, and which, when forced fully in, comes to the end of the chamber which is open and smoothly rounded. Around and upon the tube is placed a tightly-fitting elastic rubber ring for gaging the distance of introduction in use.

When necessary to load the device the piston is drawn backward, so that the chamber in front of its end may be made to contain the amount of salve or ointment deemed necessary to use at a time, and when loaded and the exterior of'the front end is coated with the same material with which it is loaded to cause it to enter easily, the gage-ring having previously been set and the place marked to provide against misplacementby the operating-surgeon when he places the gage-ring, so that the contents may be discharged at the point desired within the rectum, which is very easily ascertained by means of a good speculum by the user. Then the afflicted person inserts it in the rectum until the gage-ring comes in contact with the anus or anal membrane, the piston is forced home, the ointment discharged at the mouth of the ulcer, and there held by the closing membrane as the device is withdrawn. 4

Rectal ulcers are a very common malady, and in their treatment and cure, which is necessarily protracted and tedious, the sufierer is compelled to make daily applications to insure success. This application is made after an evacuation and thorough cleansing of the bowel by injections of water,'and this device becomes an essential element in treatment.

Having thus fully and clearly set forth the nature, object, and manner of using my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentot' the United States, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described ointment-injector, consisting of the graduated tube A, open at its front end and provided with a cap at its rear end, the piston B, and the encircling rubber gage-ring 0, substantially as specified.
