STENCIL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 277,201, dated May 8, 1883,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. BENNETT, of Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Stencil-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a device adapted for conveniently holding stencil-plates, so as to allow of their being inserted and. removed to form any particular name or address, as may be required; also for holding permanent stencil-plates of any form or shape.

The invention consists in a holder composed of two slotted clamping-plates, between which the letters are held so as to be flush with the lower face of the bottom plate, and provided with a handle, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stencil-holder with a part broken out. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.

A B are two plates, preferably made of metal of suitable length and width, and provided with one or more longitudinal slots, a a, of the shape and form required.- These plates are provided with flanges c at their ends, and the upper plate, A, is made slightly shorter than the lower plate, B, so that it will set closely down thereon. It made of thin sheet metal, the upper plate may be strengthened by strips or flanges cl along the edges of its slot. The flanges c of the upper plate, A, are extended upward to receive the handle D, which serves as a convenient means for holding the device. The upper plate is also provided with lugs f at its ends, which extend through slots formed in the flange c of the'lower plate, and serve as a means for guiding and retaining the upper plate. Upon the side flanges of the upper plate are springs g, which are formed at their lower ends with pins h, for entering holes 1', formed in the flanges c c of the two plates, for retaining the plates in either position-- that is to say, separated, as shown in Fig. l, or when moved together to clamp the stencilplate.

(Model-l The stencil-plates shown at khave their ends bent or offset, so that when they are placed upon the lower plate the ends will rest upon the same at the sides of the slot, while the middle portion, having upon it the'letter, projects downward into the slot, so as to be flush with the bottom of the plate B.

In using the holder the upper ends of the springs g are to be pressed inward, thereby disengaging the pins h, and allowing the lower plate to drop down the distance allowed by the lugsf. The stencil-plates can then be inserted in the proper order, after which the two plates are to be brought together, so as to clamp the stencil-plates, in which position the plates A B are held by the plus it. The stencil can now be used, the slot in the upper plate, A, allowing of the brush being passed over the plate. Usually there will be two slots to in the plates for two rows of stencil-plates, so that both the name and address may be set up, and in that case the handle will come be-' tween the two slots, so that they are easily accessible; but in case there should be only one slot the flanges 0 may be bent at one side,

'so that the handle shall notbe in the way.

This holder serves to retain the stencil-plates firmly clamped, so that thereis no risk of their bending or buckling up.

The holder may be made ofany suitable material and in any desired form. When constructed for holding permanently a stencil-plate of-any form, size, or character-such as are used for marking barrel'headsthe plates A B are to be made of the same form and size as the stencil, and made with straight, curved, diamond, or other shaped slot, as may be required. The

upper plate, A, is to be secured upon the lower n one by screws or similar devices, the end flanges and other parts shown not being required. The stencilplate will thus be held in a firm and substantial manner, so that it will be much more durable and lasting, besides being more convenient for use.
