Application August 12, 1955, Serial No. 528,079 1 Claim. (Cl. 4237) My invention relates to a toilet seat, and particularly relates to a toilet seat having an integrally formed cushion constructed therein.

This application is a continuation-in-part of my prior application, Serial No. 329,543, filed January 5, 1953, since abandoned.

It is an object of my invention to provide a toilet seat having an integrally formed cushion contained therein in order to relieve discomfort during elimination.

Another object of my invention is to construct a cushioned toilet seat which is sanitary and easily cleaned and which will promote the comfort of the user.

Another object of my invention is to construct an integrally formed cushioned toilet seat which will afford relief from discomfort during elimination to persons afiicted with lower back and hind quarter injuries or diseases.

Another object of my invention is to provide an integrally formed cushioned toilet seat which will have the same appearance and contour as a conventional toilet seat.

Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly effective in operation.

With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cushioned toilet seat embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an exploded view showing the arrangement and contour of the components of the toilet seat prior to assembly.

Referring now in greater detail to the drawing, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, I show an integrally cushioned toilet seat, generally designated as A, which is adapted to be conventionally mounted upon a water closet bowl.

The toilet seat A is of conventional annulated elliptical plan configuration, plano-convex in cross-section, and

comprises an annular base 12, an annular cushioning element 14, and a skin 16.

The annular base 12 is substantially elliptical and has a flat bottom 18, a truncated top 20', and arcuate convex sides 22. In the embodiment shown, the base is fabricated of wood, although any suitable rigid material, such as hard rubber, may be employed.

The cushioning element 14 is fabricated of foam rubber and has an elliptical contour whose cross-section is plano-convex. The annulus of the cushioning element 14 has a mean locus concentric with that of the base 12, but has a width intermediate that of the truncated top 20 and the bottom 18 of the base 12. The plano portion of the cushioning element is securely cemented by a rubber adhesive such as neoprene base cement to the truncated top 20 of the base so that the edges overhang the arcuate convex sides 22. The relative annular width of the cushioning element 14 and the base 12 is best illustrated in Fig. 3.

The skin 16 is made of a flexible, non-absorbent, liquid repellant material, such as thin vinyl plastic, which will flex with the cushioning element 14 when weight is imposed thereon. The skin 16 is drawn taut about the periphery of the base bottom 18 and the convex portion of the cushioning element 14 and is heat sealed at the corners 24.

As can be readily seen in Fig. 2, the overhanging portion of the cushioning element 14 is drawn down against the arcuate convex sides 22 of the base: 12, thereby offering a smooth curved contour to the toilet seat A. Furthermore, a comfortable cushioning medium is presented at both the interior and exterior portions of the toilet seat. The cementing of the cushioning element 14 to the base 12 at its truncated top 20 prevents the cushioning element from creeping or shifting in position, thus enabling the toilet seat to maintain a smooth and uniform contour over a long period of service.

Although my invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.

I claim as my invention:

A cushioned toilet seat of elliptical annular construction comprising an annular base, an annular foam rubber cushioning element, and a skin, said annular base having a flat bottom, arcuate convex sides and a truncated top, said cushioning element being plano-convex in crosssection and being securely cemented at its plano portion to the truncated top of said base whereby the edges of the cushioning element freely overhang: the arcuate convex sides, said skin being drawn taut about the convex portion of said cushioning element and the bottom of said base and heat sealed at the corners of said base.
