PNEUMATIC INDICATOR AND SPEAKING-TUBE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,110, dated May 8, 1883,

Application led December 28, 1882. (No model.)

To all lwhom it mag/*concern Beit known that I, JACOB CAPEON, of New York city, county of New York,and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Indicators and Speaking-Tubes; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.

This invention consists, mainly, trst, in the combination of the hinged cover-plate of the mouth-piece of aspeaking-tube with thehinged cover-plate of a name or number indicator located on the face-plate supporting the mouthpiece, the construction being such that by the lifting of the hinged cover-plate to answer the call through the tube the cover-plate, which has been thrown down, is returned to its normal position to conceal the number or name of the indicator which has been exposed; and, second, in the combination of the main tube, of ordinary construction, with a branch tube having a movable stud or bolt, adapted when the tube is used to actuate the cover-plate of the indicator to expose the name or number behind thesame.

It consists, further, in certain specific details of construction, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.

To enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will proceed to describe fully the construction of the same.

Figure l represents a perspective view of a base or foundation piece attached to the wall, having two indicators and two moutlrpieces, the cover-plate of the indicator in one case being thrown down to expose the indicator, and in the other case being returned to its normal position by the hinged cover-plate of the mouth-piece; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of one of the tubes and indicator, and Fig. 3 an end elevation of `one of the indicator coverplates.

A represents a base or foundation piece, of any proper form and size, which is adapted to be secured to the wall by screws or other proper fastenings.

a represents a face-plate, screwed to the base-piece in any proper manner, which is pro vided with openings a', Fig. 1, for the projection of the movable bolts, hereinafter referred to, of the speaking-tubes, with recesses a?, for the slip or plate upon which the indicator name or number is inscribed, and with extensions a3 of the speaking-tubes, adapted to take the mouth-pieces, as shown.

B B represent the mouth-pieces of speaking-tubes, any number of which may be secured, by means of extensions a3, to the baseplate of the fonndationpiece A, as shown.

b represents one of the speaking-tubes, cxtending away to any desired point in the building, in the manner well understood.

b', Fig. 2, represents a branch tube extend ing out from the main tube in any proper direction, which is provided with a horizontal extension, b2, the open end of which extends through the opening a' in the face plate of the foundation-piece, and terminates directly behind the cover-plate of theindicator, as shown.

b3 represents a stud or bolt lying in the end Vof the horizontal extension b2, which is secured in place by means of a pin, b4, extendingthrough a slot in the extension, as shown. By means of this construction the stud is adapted to move freely in a longitudinal direction within certain limits.

C U represent the indicators, which may consist of slips or plates having the proper name `or number inscribed thereon, which are inn serted into the recesses a2 of the faceplate. It' desired, however, the name or number may be inscribed directly upon the face-plate.

c c represent the cover-plates of the indicators, which may be of any proper form and size, and are provided with the hinge-slots c c', as shown.

c2 c2 represent the hin ge-bars, securely fastened to the face-plate ain any proper manner, which are provided with the hook projections of c3, adapted to enter the slots c c', as shown. These hook projections are longenough, it will be observed in Fig. 3, to permit the bottom edges ot'v the cover-plates to move outward slightly beyond a vertical line when thelatter are swung into their normal position. By means of this construction the upper edges of the plates are inclined inward from a vertical line sufiiciently far to prevent the plate from being accidentally thrown down.

Q e771 le which is hinged to the upper edge of the same in any proper manner, and is provided with the usual whistle-opening, as shown.

d represents a base-piece secured to the lower edge of the cover-plate, and E a catch-piece pivoted thereto, which is provided with the handle portion c, the catch c', and the bearing extension c2, as shown. rlhe catch e, it will be observed, has a hook, c3, with inclined face c".

b5 represents a groove or recess on the lower side of the mouth-piece, with which the hooi; ofthe catch e engages when the parts are in their normal position.

The operation is substantially as follows: When the parts are in their normal position, the hinged plates ot' the indicators cover the names or numbers of the same and conceal them from View. The hinged cover-plate of each of the mouth-pieces is also secured to its mouthpiece by means of the catch c. When the tube is used, the air-blast sounds the whistle in the usual well-known manner, the coverplate ot' the mouth-piece being held by the catch c to insure this action, and throws down the cover-plate of the proper indicator to expose the number or name behind it, this result being accomplished by the movement ot' thebolt b3, placed in the extension of the branch tube. rIhe handle e of the catch-piece of the mouth-piece cover-plate being` then grasped to raise the same, the catch will be tilted on its pivot and disengaged from the recess b5. By completing the upward movement of the cover-plate, the bearing extension of the catchpiece is caused to lift the indicator cover-plate and carry it back to its normal position, this action also moving the bolt b3 back to its normal position. When the cover-plate of the mouth-piece is released it 'falls to place, and is automatically secured by the engagement of the hook e3 with the recess b5. The parts then are in their normal position, ready for another call.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the face-plate a, having a name or number indicator located thereon, with hinged cover-plate, the speaking-tube mouth-piece extending from the face-plate, with hinged cover-plate attached on the outside thereoi", and so located in relation to the cover-plate of the indicator that when the mouth-piece cover-plate is lifted to answer the call the fallen indicator cover-plate is returned to its normal position.

2. In combination with a face-plate, a., a main tube, b, having a branch tube, b', with extension b2, carrying a stud or bolt adapted to project through the face-plate, as described.

3. In combination with the face-plate a, the hinged cover-plate of the indicator and the hinged cover-plate ofthe mouth-piece, havingl the bearing extension adapted to engage and return the indicator-plate when the mouthpiece is opened, as described.

4. In combination with the face-plate a, the indicator cover-plate with slots, and the hinged bars with hooked projections, as and for the purpose described.

5. In combination with the speaking-tube mouth-piece and the face-plate a, having the indicator cover-plate, the catch-piece E, having the handle portion c, the catch-piece c', and the bearing extension c2, as described.
