DON LAWRENCE SCHMIDT ATTU RN EYS United States Patent TAXI SIGN DISPLAY CABINET Don Lawrence Schmidt, Coeur dAlene, Idaho Application December 22, 1955, Serial No. 554,858
4 Claims. (Cl. 40125) This invention relates to a display cabinet.
The object of the invention is to provide a display cabinet for use in a vehicle such as a taxi cab whereby advertising matter can be efiectively and conveniently displayed to be read by persons riding in the cab.
Another object of the invention is to provide a display cabinet which is adapted to be secured behind the front seat of a vehicle such as a taxi cab whereby advertising matter on cards and the like can be readily positioned in the cabinet to be viewed by persons sitting in the back of the cab as for example, the advertising matter can be viewed by passengers in the cab, the cabinet including a removable cap or lid which can be removed when the advertising matter is to be changed or replaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display cabinet which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture. 1
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the display cabinet mounted on the back of the front seat of a vehicle.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the display cabinet detached from the seat.
Figure 3 is a view looking at the opposite side of the display cabinet from that view shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan View of the display cabinet, with the cap or lid removed.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a sectional View similar to Figure 5, but showing the cap or lid removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a conventional front seat of a vehicle such as a taxi cab, and the seat 10 includes a rear portion 11, a top portion 12, and side portions 13, Figure 1. The present invention is directed to a cabinet which is indicated generally by the numeral 14, and the cabinet 14 is adapted to be used for displaying advertising cards or the like.
The cabinet 14 may be made of any suitable material and includes a lower curved wall 15 and the cabinet is further provided with a cutout or window 16 whereby the advertisements can be readily viewed by persons such as passengers sitting on the rear seat of the cab. L-shaped brackets or lugs 17 may be secured as by welding to the wall 15, and the brackets 17 are adapted to have suitable securing elements such as screws 18 extended therethrough, and the screws 18 extend into support members or conventional braces 19 which are an integral part of the front seat 10, Figure 5.
The cabinet further includes a pair of vertically disposed spaced parallel side walls 20 which are each provided with a flange 21. The casing 26 is secured within the cabinet, and the casing 26 includes a lower horizontally disposed shoulder 22 and an upwardly extending vertically disposed plate portion 23 which terminates in a forwardly 2,770,903 Patented Nov. 20, 1956 projecting top section 24. L-shaped lugs 25 may be secured to the casing 26 and to the wall 15 in any suitable manner, as for example, by welding, and the lugs 25 may help to secure the casing 26 in its proper position in the cabinet.
The top section 24 of the casing 26 is provided with a plurality of apertures or openings 27, Figure 4, and suitable securing elements such as screws 28 extend through the openings 27 and down into engagement with the top of the seat 10. In Figure 1 there is illustrated the back rest portion of the seat but it is to be understood that the seat 10 is of conventional construction.
Positioned within the cabinet and supported on the shoulder 22 is a transparent plate 29 which may be made of glass. The plate 29 coacts with the plate portion 23 to define therebetween a space 30 whereby cards or sheets having advertisements thereon may be inserted into the space 30.
There is further provided a cap or lid 31 which is detachably mounted on top of the cabinet, and the cap 31 includes a top member 32 which terminates in a curved portion 33 which frictionally engages the flanges 21. The cap 31 further includes a downwardly extending portion 34 which terminates in a horizontal section 35 which engages beneath the top wall 24 of the casing 26.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a cabinet which is especially suitable for use in displaying advertising matter or the like. In use, the cabinet 14 can be mounted adjacent the upper rear portion of the back rest which forms a part of the front seat of the vehicle which may be a taxi cab. Then, persons sitting on the back seat will be able to readily view the advertising cards which are in the space 30 between the transparent plate 29 and the vertical plate portion 23. Thus, the indicia or advertisements on the cards will be visible through the transparent plate 29 to the person riding in the taxi cab so that the advertisement will be especially effective. When the advertising cards are to be changed or replaced, it is only necessary to readily manually disengage the cap 31 so that access can be had to the space 30, whereby the cards can be readily removed or replaced or changed around as desired. The cabinet can be readily secured in place by means of the screws 18 and the screws 28. The cap 31 insures that the advertisement cards will not be stolen and the cap also covers up the screw holes 27 when the cap is in place. The cap also insures that a person will not injure himself or herself on any projecting rough edges. The passengers sit directly facing the display cabinet and the advertisers may rent card space for diiferent periods of time and the cards are removable or changeable. The cabinet can be made of any suitable material such as metal, plastic, or the like. Advertisements of establishments such as motels, cafes, clubs or the like can be effectively displayed. It will be noticed that the bottom portion of the cabinet is thicker than the top portion so as to compensate for the inclined back 11 so that the ads will be held out at a vertical position so as to make them easy to view. If desired a suitable bulb can be used to spread more light when a night display is required or desired.
