Description

Nov. 13, 1956 B. v. THOMPSON 2,770,002
CARPET GRIPPER MOLDING Filed Dec. 28, 1954 INVENTOR. 5IN/g `Thonvpson CARPET GREPER MOLDING Billy V. rThompson, Vicksburg, Miss. Application December 28, 1954, Serial No. 47 8,067 1 Claim. (Cl. 16-7) This invention relates to carpet edge fastening devices, and more particularly to an edge molding for securing carpeting to the door.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved edging means for anchoring the edges of a door covering, such as a carpet or the like, said edging means being simple in construction, being easy to install, and being neat in appearance.
A further object of the invention is to provide an irnproved carpet edge gripping assembly which involves inexpensive components, which is durable in construction, which provides a smooth edge contour, and which securely fastens the carpeting.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a base strip employed in the improved carpet edge gripping assembly of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the cover strip employed in conjunction with the base strip of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the base strip and cover strip of Figures 1 and 2 in assembled relationship.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical cross sectional view taken through a carpet edge gripping assembly including the elements of Figures 1 to 3 and showing the manner in which the marginal portion of a carpet is gripped by the assembly.
Referring to the drawings, 11 designates an elongated base strip adapted to be secured to the floor adjacent the edge of the carpeting to be fastened, said base strip comprising the main body 12 formed at its rear end with the offset longitudinal flange 13, said flange being dened by a longitudinal recess 14 at the margin of the strip, as is clearly shown in Figure 1. The strip 11 is provided at its forward longitudinal margin, as viewed in Figure 1, with an upstanding flange 15, said ange being inclined upwardly and rearwardly and rising for a substantial height, the top portion of the flange 15 extending parallel to and positioned above the base strip 11 and having the spaced apertures 17 adapted to receive self-tapping screws, or similar fasteners, as will be presently explained. The main body 12 of the strip 11 is formed with further spaced apertures 13 adapted to receive screws 19 or the like, for securing the base strip to the floor 20, as shown in Figure 4.
Designated at 21 is a cover strip adapted to be engaged over the base strip, said cover strip being formed at its rear margin with the bottom inturned horizontal ange 22 adapted to fit into the recess 14, whereby the rear margin of the cover strip 21 extends around the offset rear ange 13 of the base strip, the cover strip 21 having the gradually inclined wall portion 23 terminating in a horizontal forward top portion 24, the edge of the top portion 24 being formed with the bead 25. At its intermediate portion the cover strip 21 is formed with a downwardly and forwardly directed rib element 26, said rib element tapering downwardly in thickness, as is clearly l United States Patent O shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. When the cover element 21 is engaged with the base strip 11 in the manner illustrated in Figures 3, the rib 26 extends downwardly and inwardly toward the upstanding front flange 15 of the base strip and projects a substantial distance below the edge of the inturned horizontal flange element 16'on the tiange 15.
In using the above described molding assembly, the marginal portion of the carpeting, shown at 27, is engaged over the base strip 11 after said base strip has been fastened to the floor, said marginal portion of the carpeting 27 extending over the edge of the flange element 16 and being disposed on the body 12 of the base strip 11 in the manner shown in Figure 4. Thereafter, the cover element 21 is engaged over the base strip 11, the inturned rear bottom flange 22 of the cover element being engaged in the recess 14 and the horizontal forward top portion 24 of the cover element being extended over the portion of the carpeting supported on the horizontal flange element 16 of the base strip in the manner shown in Figure 4, the bead 25 then engaging the carpeting at a line overlying the inclined front flange 15 of the base strip. The carpeting is gripped between the edge of the horizontal flange 16 of base strip 11 and the depending rib 26 of the cover strip in the manner shown in Figure 4, suitable self-tapping screws 28 being engaged through apertures 29 provided therefor in the cover strip 21, said 'apertures registering with the apertures 17, and the Iselftapping screws 28 threadedly engaging in the apertures 17, whereby the horizontal portion 24 of the cover strip is clamped `against the portion of the carpeting engaged on the horizontal flange 16.
As will be seen from Figure 4, suitable padding 31 may be provided beneath the carpeting 27, to support the carpeting at the same height as the flange element 16 of the base strip 11.
As will be further apparent from Figure 4, the sloping portion 23 of the cover strip provides a gradual rise which is smooth and which has rounded edge portions, whereby the edge-gripping assembly presents a minimum obstruction and provides a neat appearance at the edge of the carpeting.
While a specific embodiment of 'an improved carpet edge-gripping assembly has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as dened by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A carpet edge-gripping assembly comprising a base strip adapted to be secured to the oor, an upstanding flange at one longitudinal edge of said base strip, said ange having a top portion extending parallel to and positioned above said base strip, the other longitudinal edge of said base strip being formed with a longitudinal recess, and a cover strip adapted to be engaged over said top portion to clamp the edge of a carpet therebetween, said cover strip having a longitudinal rib element at its intermediate portion directed downwardly and inwardly toward said upstanding ange, whereby a portion of the edge of a carpet may be gripped between said rib element and the edge of said top portion, said cover strip being formed at its outer margin with an inturned longitudinal flange lockingly receivable in said recess.
