Application June 13, 1956, Serial No.- 515,063 3 Claims. c1. zit-sat My invention relates to table lamps and similar devices.
My invention relates more particularly to table lamps of the type used for lighting in cliiiing roon'i's, cocktail loungers, terraces, and for subdued lighting in the Home as a night light 'or in dens and television rooms.
The principal object of the present invention to provide an improved table lamp of the type descr'bedfthat carries therein a self-contained fluid containefh lamp-chimney base and wick holder attached th this assembly positioned in a protective lamp base and shade assembly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination lamp base and shade assembly of the type described so constructed that the same includes a protective buffer ring to which the shade is attached, which protects the lamp and lamp chimney even when the lamp is knocked over, so tipping and fire hazards are largely eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined lamp base and shade assembly of the type described capable of use for either a fluid fuel burning or an electric lamp.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be more apparent from the following description wherein reference is had to the accompanying drawings, upon which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my improved table lamp;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 2A is a side elevational view of the fuel container, lamp chimney holder and chimney unit shown separated from the table lamp assembly;
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view showing the details of construction taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention which I have chosen to illustrate and describe the same, the table lamp assembly may generally include a comparatively heavy metal base member having a fuel container pot or base extension 12 connected thereto. The base member 10 may be in the form of an inverted shallow coneshaped dish having the tapped bore 34 axially thereof. The fuel container pot or base extension 12 may be made of sheet metal and includes a tapered base portion 30, an outwardly directed circular shoulder or ledge, and a tapered upwardly extending portion having a circular cap 26 over the opening in the same, the cap having a central opening or well 24 therein. A fuel container 14 provided with an upper threaded end 16 receives a screw cap member 18 which may include the wick carrying base 20 and a lamp chimney 22.
The fuel container 14 is adapted to be seated in the cylindrical well 24 of the container cap 26, the well having an inturned circular flange resting on the ledge of the fuel container pot and a tapered extension 28 fitting 2,769,899 Patented Nov. 6, 1956 within the tapered base portion 30 of the container pot 12. The tapered extension 28 of the cap 26 has a bottom wall 29 provided with an axial opening 38; A hollow bolt 32 may be screw-threadedly mounted in the tapped bore 34 in the base 10 and receive a lock nut 36 on the lower end of the same. The upper end of the bolt may extend through the opening 38 in the lower wall 29 of the cover member 26 and receive a nut 40 securely fastening the cover 26, the pot 12, and the base 16 together. In order to protect the table lamp assembly against breakage when it is accidentally tipped or knocked over, I provide a plurality of L-shaped diagonally directed arm members 42 fastened to the cover 26 and extending upw ardly and outwardly, the ends of the same being welded to the bottom of a cylindrical buffer ring 44. The buffer ring 44, which is made of comparatively heavy metal; is adapted to telescopically and with a tight or friction fit receive the lower edge 46 of an inverted cone-shaped metal shade '48 which has a centering ring 50 adjacent its upper, opening 52 to centralize and locate the glass lamp chimney 22. I
From the above and foregoing description it can be seen that I have provided a lamp construction which is easily assembled to provide a sturdy and durable table lamp. The base extension and buffer ring assembly are such that they may be rigidly connected together, and when the metallic shade 48 is in position, even though the lamp is tipped on its side, none of the parts will become loose so they can roll away or drop and become broken. Because the metallic lamp shade is not separated from the buffer ring, the glass lamp chimney cannot become loose to expose the flame on the wick to atmosphere, and due to the type of fluid which is used in the lamps, when they are knocked over or fall on their sides, the flame quickly becomes extinguished, thus eliminating the possibility of starting fires.
By the use of the hollow bolt 34 as shown, either the container 14 and a fluid burning lamp may be used, or a socket and an electric lamp may be mounted in the member 24, in which case the wiring would extend through the hollow nut 32.
While I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be made in the exact details shown, and I do not wish to be limited in any particular; rather what I desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
