A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MEYER, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BABY-CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters. Patent No. 276,853, dated May l1, 1,8834.
` Application tiled October 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all ufhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MEYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Baby-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to childrens carriages; and it consists in forming the bodyin two parts,
hinged together and provided with grooved segments and thumb-screws, by means of which they maybe folded and secured in any position, substantially as -hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved carriage in a position for use, and Fi'g. 2 is a similar view folded.
A represents the bed of a childs carriage, made in any of the forms in general use, and divided transversely, just forward of the seat, into two parts. One of these parts is provided with a slotted or grooved segment, B, which is an are ofa circle whose center is at a point at'orjust below the bottom of the body, at the point Where the two parts meet. At this point they are hinged together by a pivot, b, and the other part of the bed or body A is provided with a screw, e, which is headed upon its inner end, and, passing throughthe slotted segment B, is provided on its outer end with a thumb-nut, e, by which it may be tightly set at any point. The two parts ofthe bodyare each provided with a frame, C C', the frame C being secured to the forward part of the body1 A and the frame C to the rear portion of the same. These two frames extend downward at an angle, crossing eachother, and being hinged together at the same point and by the same pivots which secure the two parts of the body. The lower ends of these frames C C are provided with hollow barrels c c', which inclose coilsprings and rest upon shouldered posts d d, secured tothe front and rear axles. The wheels D D run loosely upon these axles. The handles E are hinged to or pivoted upon the rear axle, and are braced or secured to the body by short pieces of metal e c, pivoted tothe handles, and also to the rear end of the bottom of the carriage bed or body, in such a position that when the carriage is extended for use these braces e e are about horizontal.
When the carriage is in the position seen in Fig. l and the thumb-screws a are tightened, it forms a firm and strong vehicle, and the handles are securely braced in position for use in any way.
When it is desired to put the carriage away or take it up a narrow or crooked flight of stairs, the thumb-nuts a are loosened and the two parts of the body are revolved upon their pivot till the screw a is at the other end of the slotted segment B, and the carriage assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, the handles having at the same time been drawn in close to the body by the pivoted braces e e. In this position the vehicle takes up but little room,
and may be placed in a corner or taken up stairs with great facility. It will be noticed that in this position the wheels are all upon the ground, and the carriage stands as rmly and may be moved about as easily as when extended for use.
Y Any kind of top may be used on the vehicle that is found most desirable.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, `and desire to secure by Letters Pate-nt, is
1. A folding ehilds carriage provided with handles pivoted upon the rear axle and secured to the body by pivoted braces, whereby the handles are drawn into the bed when the vehicle is folded, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a folding chlds carriage, the combination of the body A, made in two parts and hinged together at b, the slotted segments B, attached to one of said parts, the headed screws a, having set-nuts a', attached to the other part of said body, and the pivoted frames C C, each attached to one of said parts and carrying the axles and Wheels at their lower ends, all substantially as shown'and described. i
3. A folding childs carriage consisting, essentially,'of a bed or body, A, made'in two parts and hinged together near its longitudinal center, a slotted segment, B, a headed IOO screw, a, having set-nut a', two iudepeudently- In testimony whereof I afx my signature in framed frames, C C', carrying the axles aud presence of two witnesses. Wheels D D', andthe handles E, pivoted to the rear axle and secured to the bed by pivoted FREDERHJK MEYER' 5 braces e e, all combined and arranged to oper- Witnesses:
ate substantially as and for the purpose herein W. C. MGARTHUR, set forth. l FRANK JOHNSON.
