Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEE, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAGE-coc K.
SPECIFIGATIN'formingpart of -Letters Patent No..276,836, dated May 1,` 1883.
Application filed March 1, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEE, a citizen ot' the United States of America, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and l useful Improvementsin Gage-ocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
v and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which .form a part ot this specification. l
This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovementsin gage-cocks; and it eonsists in providing a gage-cock, faucet, or similar cut-olf valve, the upper part ot which is ot' ordinary construction, with a cutoft' located beneath the valve-seat, which cnt-oft has anguiar pert'orations or openings, by which the way is connected to the opening beneath the valve-seat, the said parts being united by a nut, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointedout in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a gage-cock, valve, or spigot by means ot'v which the upper operating parts can be detached for repair without emptying the receptacle to which it is attached.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure lis a side view of the` ga ge-cock or faucet constructed in accord ance with my invention. Fig 2 is a vertical longitudiual section. 3 is a plan view ot' the lower portion ot' the valve, showing the position of the opening.
In the annexed drawings I have shown a' gage-cock or spigot, the upper part of which is ot' ordinary construction, to `which my iuvention is applied, in which the perforation a below the valve-seat b is at an angle with said valve-seat, and terminates nearer one side of the circumference ot' the jointe than the other.
The lower portion, D, ot' myimproved valve is provided at its uppery end with shoulders, which are embraced by the nut B, for attachment with the upper portion of the valve C, and its lower end is screw-threaded, as shown at E, for attachment to the boiler. '.lhe exit tube or openin g d in the lower portion of the valve, adj acent tothe nut B, is formed at an over or upon the valve-seat b. This packing',
which is usually of an elastic material, constantly needs renewing, and to do the same heretofore it has been necessary to remove the whole valve. 1I am aware that to accomplish this end valves of this class have been provided with stop-cocks at the lower portion,
which have been found to be objectionable, as
the joints become glued together by reason of sediment and untrequent use, and cannot be turned oft' without removing the same, and as my improved valve can be loosened by turning the nut B this objection is obviated.
The joints between theA upper and lower portions ot' the valve G D are ground, and. they are loosened by turning the nut B, which unites the parts, and4 by turning the parts upon each other the opening between these parts will not coincide, and consequently the passage-way will be cut oft'. y If desirable, instead of forming a latjoint between the parts C and D, as shown, ll may provide thesarne with conical seats, in which the holes forthe passage-way may be drilled, said holes being at an angle with the main portions of the valve.
Having th usdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gage-cock provided with a vertical cutoff and an outlet-tube, the central valve-seat, b, with an angular passage-way, a, below said seat, in combination with the base D, having a coinciding angular passage-way at lits top, thejointsbetween the parts being groundand united by a nut, B, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JoHN LEE.
