UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
VALENTINE H. HALLOOK, or QUEENS, ssronon TO THE HALLOOKDAMPER REGULATOR GOMPANY,OF BROOKLYN, new YORK.
.DAMPER-RE'GULATOR FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
To all whom. it mag concern Be it known that LVALENTINE H. HAL
LOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Damper Regulators for Steam-Boilers, of which the followingisa specification. V y
This invention relates to that class of damper-regulators for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me December 9, 1879, No. 222,489; and it consists in the the damper. Fig. 3is a cross'section on tLe.
line as m, Fig. 1, looking downward.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates a cylinder, which is connected with a water-chamber, B, and contains a piston, 0, having its rod 1) arranged to extend upward through and beyond the top of the cylinder, where it connects with a weighted damper-operating cord or chain, E. The piston-rod, moreover, engages at the upper end with a cross-head, F, from which is suspended, by means oi rods 0 and a second head, G, a weight, H, and when steam is admitted to the water-chamber B from the boiler the water is forcedfrom such chamber into thecylinder, and acts on the piston (3 to lift it against the weight, thereby regulating the position of the damper.
For the purpose of insuring the correct operation of the apparatus I have found it important to provide the piston-rod D with a positive guide atthe upper end, and before my presentinvcntionthe guide was composed of novel means hereinafter described for guiding SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,810, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed February 8,1883. (No model.)
grooved rollers arranged in fixed hearings to re- 4 5 ceive the piston-rodbetween them, the rollers bei in g placed at a distance above the head F equal the required movement of the cross-head F,
together with the piston, they being secured at the opposite ends to brackets K, and as the cross-head moves up or down the rollers I travel along the guide-rods, whereby the piston-rod is steadied or guided in an effective 6 manner. Thus, in lieu of the fixed guide heretofore used, I substitute a movable guide, and the result is that I require no space further than to permit the movement of the crosshead F, at the same time shortening thepiston- 7o rod to a material extent.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, with the cylinder, the piston, 7 5
and the piston-rod connecting with the weighted damper-operating cord or chain, of the weighted cross-head F, engaging the pistonrod, the guide-rods J, and the grooved rollers I, mounted in the cross-head to engage, the guide-rods, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
