Letters Patent No. 81,433, dated August25, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATOR.
uitge rlgetnle referrer tu im tigen -litters ttmt mit mating part rf tige same;
.Bc it known that I, EDWIN TAYLOR, of Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee, invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators; 'and I do 'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of th'e same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this speci'fication, and in which- A Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal s'ection of a steam-boiler and {ire-box with my invention applied.
Figure 2 isa perspective view ot the same. i
Figure 3 is a plan ofthe boiler.
Figure 4 is adctaehed sectional view of the water-reservoir and its appendages.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The subject of this invention is a steam-generatingapparatus in which the boiler is completely enclosed within the re-box or furnace, so as to be entirely exposed to the fire at all parts, and in which the boiler is so suspended and combined with a counterbalance-weight or spring, lthat when the latter preponderates, in consequence of thereduced weight ofthe boiler caused by the evaporation of its contents, th'e motion thereby imparted to the boiler eilects the opening ofy the valve through which water is supplied to the boilerV from an elevated tanl or reservoir.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in connection with the accompanying drawings.
A is the dre-box or furnace, and B the boiler enclosed therein.v The boiler may in likemanner be enclosed within brick-work, when desired. It will be seen that the boiler is exposed to the direct action of the fire on all sides as well as at the ends.
By thus arranging the boiler, the most economical and effective application of the heat is attained.
The boiler B `is held in suspension by means of the chain C, the connection between the'boiler and the chain being effected by means of the hook l)` and plate Dwhich plate connects the inner ends of the rods?) b, the outer ends of said rods being clamped, bolted, or otherwise securely made fast'to the boiler, as shown in`ig. 3.
'.lhe chain C is attached to the end of a lever, E, which'is mounted, so as to be capable of vibrating, upon a bridge or support, F, restingupon the top of the fire-box.
The leverE carries a weight, G, which serves as a counter-balance to the boiler B.
The weight G is hung at any desired point upon the lever E, by means of its bail,g, and the notches in the edge of the long arm ot' said lever. The notches may represent in inches the amount oi`- water which the `weight G is capable of counterbalancing at its several points of suspension. Thus thc weight G, when adjusted ut the extremity ofthe long arm of the lever E, will counterbalance the boiler when charged with a maximum TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
and State of Michigan, have ysupply of water, and to adapt said weight tol counterbalance the boiler with a smaller quantity of water, it is adjusted nearer to the fulcrum of lever E.
"lhe lever E has attached to its end a rod, I-I, whose upper end is attached to a lever, I'l, having a suitable supportingfulcrum upon the elevated reservoir I, (see iig. 4.) The reservoirI may communicate with the boiler B through the flexible pipeK and a rigid pipo, which latter rises from the boiler and through the lire-box, and is provided with a stop-cock, 7c. In thebottom of the reservoir I is a valve, J, which is attached to a tube, J', passing centrally through it, a'nd'projecting above the water-line in the reservoir. The tube J is connected to the lever H by means of the rod'h.
The smoke-stackor chimney is shown at L, and the steam-pipe of the boiler at M, the latter being provided with suitable guides, the better to steady and prevent from tilting the boiler B when in motion.
In order tofun understanding of the operation, suppose the-valve J to be closed, and the boiler, with a full `supply, sustained by the weight Gr. 'Nona itis manifest that es the water evaporates, the boiler grows lighter,
and' as soon as it becomes incapable of counterbalanoing the weight G', it is raised to a greater or less extent by the latter, and the consequent vibration of the lever E, and downward motion of the rod H, serve to lift the valve J. A new supply of water is thereby admitted to the boiler B, which is thus depressed to its former position, in resuming whichthe boiler serves to close the valve J and cut off the water from the reservoir.
I am aware of no instance inwhich the boiler has been made to actuate the mechanism/which opens and closes the channel which supplies it with water.
The tube J', projecting above the water-level in reservoir I, admits steam above the same, in order to equalize the pressure upon the opposite sides of the valve J, thus preventing the steam lfrom opening the said valve.
` is the supply-orifice of the reservoir, and z" a cock to try the depth of water therein. When water is being supplied to the reservoir I, the cock k of the feed-pipe K is closed, but at other times it is left open.
It is manifest that a weight attached'to a cord running over a. pulley, or even a spring, or a combination thereof, might be'made to perform the function of the parts G E C.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-A The arrangement of the suspended counterbalanced boiler B within the fire-box or chamber A, and the elevated' tank or reservoir I, substantially as .and for the purpose set forth.
To the above I have signed my name, this tenth day of March, 1868. v I i EDWIN TAYLOR. Witnesses:
L. D. Dnw'EY,
F. A. DEWEY.
