Description

United States Patent WHEEL BARROW Lynn E. Jenkins, Miami Beach, Fla.
Application March 25, 1955, Serial No. 496,849
4 Claims. (Cl. 222-176) This invention relates, in general, to wheel barrows, and has more particular reference to Wheel barrows with removable bottoms.
One object of the invention is to provide a wheel barrow, with a removable solid bottom, for use in moving dirt, sand, and the like.
A further object is to provide a wheel barrow with a screen bottom, which, when the solid bottom is removed, can be used for sifting sand, dirt, and the like.
A further object is to provide a wheel barrow with a screen bottom, that is suitable for spreading fertilizer, as on a lawn.
Further objects, purposes, and characteristic features of the invention, will appear as the description progresses, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, showing, solely by way of example, and in no manner in a limiting sense, one form which the invention can assume.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional, View of a device, in accordance With this invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view, with the solid bottom removed;
Figure 3 is a sectional view, on line 3--3 of Figure l, and viewed in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is a sectional view, on line 44 of Figure 1, and viewed in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, of a detail; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary, elevational view, of a detail.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a wheel barrow, with legs 7, wheel 8, and frame 9, with handles 10.
Supported by the frame 9, is a body of novel construction. The body is rectangular in form, and has four inwardly sloping sides, 11, 12, 13, and 14. These sides, at their lower edges, extend downwardly, as vertical sides 15, 16, 17, and 18, which at their lower edges are turned inwardly, as at 19, 20, 21 and 22, to form a narrow horizontal flange defining the opening in the bottom of the body.
The side 18, at the back of the body, has a slot 23, extending across its entire width, and with its lower edge somewhat above the inturned flange 19.
A removable screen bottom is provided and comprises a frame 24, holding a screen panel 25. This screen bottom can be passed through a slot 23, to cover the bottom of the body, (as in Figure 2) with its frame 24, supported by the peripheral flange at 19, 20, 21 and 22.
A solid bottom 26, is provided, in the form of a metal sheet, which can be passed through slot 23, to rest (see Figures 1 and 5), on top of the screen bottom frame 24.
As above described, it can be seen that the wheel barrow with the solid bottom in place, can be used, in the usual manner, to move materials.
Patented Oct. 23, 1956 By removing the solid bottom 26, the wheel barrow can be used to sift material, as sand and dirt, and also for spreading fertilizer, as on a lawn, or the like.
The above rather specific description, of one form of the invention, has been given solely by way of example, and is not intended, in any manner, whatsoever, in a limiting sense.
Furthermore, all such modifications, variations, and adaptations, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, are intended to be covered by this disclosure.
What is claimed is:
l. A wheel barrow, comprising, in combination, a frame, a body supported on the frame, the body having four inwardly and downwardly sloping sides, a downwardly extending vertical side at the lower edge of each sloping side, an inturned flange on the lower edge of each vertical side and defining an open bottom area in the body, and a removable screen bottom having a frame resting on the inturned flanges, and covering the open bottom area.
2. A wheel barrow, comprising, in combination, a frame, a body supported on the frame, the body having four inwardly and downwardly sloping sides, a downwardly extending vertical side at the lower edge of each sloping side, an inturned flange on the lower edge of each vertical side and defining an open bottom area in the body, and a removable screen bottom having a frame resting on the inturned flanges, and covering the open bottom area, and a removable solid bottom resting on the screen bottom frame, and covering said screw bottom.
3. A Wheel barrow, comprising, in combination, a frame, a body supported on the frame, the body having four inwardly and downwardly sloping sides, a downwardly extending vertical side at the lower edge of each sloping side, an inturned flange on the lower edge of each vertical side and defining an open bottom area in the body, and a removable screen bottom having a frame resting on the inturned flanges, and covering the open bottom area, and a removable solid bottom resting on the screen bottom frame, and covering said screw bottom, one of said vertical sides having a slot extending across the entire Width of the side and being proportioned to permit removal therethrough of the solid bottom from the body.
4. A wheel barrow, comprising, in combination, a frame, a body supported on the frame, the body having four inwardly and downwardly sloping sides, a downwardly extending vertical side at the lower edge of each sloping side, an inturned flange on the lower edge of each vertical side and defining an open bottom area in the body, and a removable screen bottom having a frame resting on the inturned flanges, and covering the open bottom area, and a removable solid bottom resting on the screen bottom frame, and covering said screw bottom, one of said vertical sides having a slot extending across the entire width of the side and being proportioned to permit removal therethrough of the solid bottom from the body, said slot also being proportioned to permit removal therethrough of the screen bottom from the body.
