JOHN JOADWINE, OF
DETACHABLE CALK SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOR HORSESHOES.
Patent No. 276,694, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed February 2, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JOADWINE, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Oalks for Horseshoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming apart of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a horseshoe having detachable heel and toe calks which may be conveniently removed when dulled and be replaced by sharp ones.
Figure 1 is a view in perspecti e of a shoe embodying my improvement; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the toe-calk, and Fig. 3 a front elevation.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the shoe, B the toe-calk, and 0 one of the heelcalks.
The toe of the shoe is provided on the under side with the lip-like projections a a, separated by the recess b, adapted to receive the toe-call: B. The recess bis ofa greater diameter atthe bottom than at the top, the toe-call: being of a corresponding form, so that the calk' can only be inserted and removed endwise. The end a of the lips a a is closed by stock,
end, and is removably secured in place by the same as the other nails securing the shoe to the foot. By this arrangement the toe-calkis securely retained in place, and when necessary to remove the same the one nail D is only required to be drawn.
The toecalkis provided on the inner side with the shoulder 12, which extends the whole 0 length of the calk, and provides a bearing for the curved lip on that side, serving to more securely retain these parts in relation to each other.
The heel of the shoe is provided with the .5
lips cl, having the dovetailed recess d for the reception of the heel-calks. The recess or recesses d and the calks are dovetailed together, the calks being removably inserted and retained in place by the nail d inserted 50 in an aperture in the rounded lateral projecting part E, formed integral with the shoe. The retaining-nail d need not necessarily be driven into the hoof, as it is found by practical working that a key-nail of a length corresponding to the thickness of the shoe is sulficient to properly retain the calks in place.
By this arrangement the dulled calks are easily removed and as conveniently replaced by sharp ones without the necessity of removing the shoe at each operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a horseshoe provided 6 with the rounded lateral projecting part E and down ward-projecting lips d, forming the recess d, of the removable heel-call; t) and the key-nail d substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN JOAIHVINE.
