Description
Oct. 9, 1956 w. v. DAVIS 2,755,956
REMOVABLE POURING 'LIP FOR PAINT CANS AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 10, 1953 INVENTOR.
William VDaW'Zs ATTl DRN EYE ilnited States Patent 6 REMOVABLE POURING LIP FOR PAINT CANS 'AND THE LIKE William V. Davis, Smyrna, Ga. Application December 10, 1953, Serial No. 397,338 2 Claims. (Cl. 222- 70) This invention relates to conventional paint cans having a lid or cover with an annular rib U-shaped in cross section pressed into a similarly shaped groove, and in particular a lip or spout having an arcuate rib also adapted to be presed into the groove of a paint can with the lid or cover removed and in which, with the parts in position, a plate with wings at the sides extends outwardly from the walls of the can to facilitate pouring material from the can.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a pouring spout for a paint can in which the spout is adapted to be inserted in a cover retaining groove of a paint can for use and also in which the device is adapted to be removed When use thereof is not desired.
Various types of portable or removable spouts have been provided for containers of different types and kinds, however, for use in combination with paint cans where paint fills the annular groove in which a cover or lid is frictionally held it is desired to provide a spout that prevents paint working into the groove. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a spout having an arcuate rib U-shaped in cross section adapted to be pressed into the annular cover retaining groove of a paint can whereby the spout is frictionally held without screws, latches, or other devices and wherein the spout is readily removed to permit sealing of the can with the cover.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a pouring spout for a paint can whereby the spout is adapted to be frictionally retained in the cover holding groove at the end of the can and wherein the spout is provided with means for preventing paint being poured from the can entering the said cover retaining groove.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paint pouring spout for paint cans in which the spout is adapted to be applied to a paint can, used for pouring paint from the can, and removed after use without damaging the can.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved paint pouring spout for paint cans of the type having friction grooves for retaining covers on the cans in which the spout is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a plate having converging wings at the sides with an annular rib, U-shaped in cross section extended between diverging ends of the wings and formed on a radius corresponding with that of the cover retaining groove of a can, said rib having an arcuate apron on the inner edge adapted to overlap the upper portion of the inner wall of the cover retaining groove.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the improved paint pouring spout showing the spout positioned on the upper end of a paint can.
'ice
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the spout taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and showing one side of the upper portion of a paint can on which the spout is positioned, the lower part of the paint can being broken away.
Figure 3 is an elevational view looking toward the inner end of the spout, the parts also being shown on an enlarged scale.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved paint pouring spout of this invention includes a plate having an intermediate section 10 with wings 11 and 12 at the sides and with a rig 13, U-shaped in cross section extended downwardly from the large end of the portion 10 and having an apron 14 extended from the inner wall.
The rib 13, being U-shaped in cross section, having side walls 15 and 16 connected with an arcuate section 17 has suflicient resilency inherent therein to frictionally hold the spout in pouring position in the cover retaining groove 18 of a paint can, such as the can 19.
The ends of the rib 13 are closed with sealing dams or sections 20 and 21 that are formed from the material of the spout and these are flared outwardly to extend from the ends of the apron 14 to the inner ends of the wings 11 and 12 whereby with the width of the spout being substantially degrees, paint passing over the apron and rib and through the intermediate portion 10 of the spout will be retained in the body portion of the spout or lip without danger of the paint flowing into the cover retaining groove 18 during the act of pouring or at the termination thereof.
The complete lip or spout is formed from a plate or continuous sheet of material with the wings 11 and 12 bent upwardly on lines 22 and 23, with the arcuate rib 13 formed downwardly and with the inner wall 15 of the rib formed over and downwardly to provide the apron 14. The apron 14 is so formed as to provide a slip fit over the inner wall of the cover retaining groove 18 to prevent seepage under the apron 14 into the cover retaining groove 18. The dams or sections 20 and 21 are also formed at the ends and these sections seal the ends of the rib 13 whereby paint is retained in the rib during the act of pouring and the runback of residual paint on the lip at the termination of the pouring act is constrained to return to the container over the apron 14 without spreading into and around the cover retaining groove 18.
With the parts formed in this manner the spout is positioned on a paint can, as illustrated in Fig. 2 with the intermediate portion 10 sloping upwardly to facilitate draining paint back into the can or rib 13 and after paint is poured from the can the spout may be removed and the cover replaced in the groove 18.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
l. A paint can pouring spout comprising a plate having an inclined intermediate portion with converging wings extended from the low part of the plate to the upwardly extended edge thereof and having an arcuate rib, U-shaped in cross section extended downwardly from the low end for frictionally retaining the spout in a cover retaining groove of a paint can, said arcuate rib having an apron extended from the inner wall with the apron positioned to overlay the inner wall of said cover retaining groove, and said wings terminating at the edge of said apron.
2. A paint can pouring spout comprising a plate having an inclined intermediate portion with wings at the sides and with the Wings converging from the low end 7 of the plate upwardly toward the high end thereof, said plate having an arcuate rib, U-shaped in cross section extended downwardly at the lower end and the ends of said rib being closed, the inner Wall of said rib having an arcuate apron extended therefrom, and the outer ends of said wings terminating at the edge of said apron.
