Description
Uni. 9,1956 E. v. BRYANT 2,765,639
BABY CUP Filed April 2, 1955 ATTQRN EYS Unite States Patent 9 BABY CUP Edmond Vestal Bryant, Cleveland, Ohio Application April 2, 1953, Serial No. 346,475 1 Claim. (Cl. 65-13) This invention relates to a drinking cup, and more particularly to a childs drinking cup.
The object of the invention is to provide a childs drinking cup for use in teaching infants or children how to use a glass or cup in drinking milk, water, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a babys drinking cup which will not spill and which is tip proof and leak proof, the baby cup being sanitary and being easy and safe to clean and use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a childs drinking cup which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the childs drinking cup, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the childs drinking cup.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral designates the body of the baby cup and the body 10 may be fabricated of any suitable material such as plastic.
The body 10 is tapered so that the lower end thereof is of greater diameter than the upper end and this construction helps to prevent the childs drinking cup from accidentally tipping over. In manufacturing the drinking cup, the bottom wall 12 may be made of a separate piece from the body 10, and the bottom wall 12 is provided with an annular rim 14 which is snugly seated in a recess 11 in the bottom of the body 10, and the bottom wall 12 may be secured in any suitable manner to the body 10, Figure 2.
Detachably mounted on the upper end of the body 10 is a cover 15. Thus, the cover 15 can be removed from the body 19 when the cup is to be filled with milk or water, and also the cover 15 can be removed when the cup is to be cleaned. The cover 15 may be made of a single piece of suitable material such as plastic, and the cover 15 includes an annular flange 16 which snugly embraces the upper portion or" the body 10. The cover 15 is provided with a lip receiving recess 17 and wherein the ends and sides of the recess become gradually shallower. The cover 15 is further provided with an opening 18 whereby the contents of the cup can pass therethrough into the childs mouth. A small aperture 19 is also provided in the cover 15 whereby air can enter the cup to take the place of the discharging fluid.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that a childs drinking cup has been provided which includes the cap or cover 15 that is provided with the openings 18 and 19 which permit just enough milk or other fluid to pass to the baby so that the baby can drink his or her milk in complete comfort without spilling. The cup of the present invention will not accidentally tip over and is leak proof and sanitary to use, The cover 15 can be removed when ice the cup is to be filled or cleaned. Since the top of the cup is completely closed except for the small openings 18 and 19 the milk or water cannot accidentally spill out of the cup. The small aperture 19 lets air enter the cup during the drinking by the child. Also, the cup of the present invention is especially easy to clean and there are no sharp corners or spouts sticking out which might accidentally jab the childs eye or mouth. The openings in the cover are arranged so that just the right amount of fluid will be discharged from the cup. Further, the base of the cup is wider than the top thereof so that the cup will not accidentally tip over. The cup will help prevent choking and will prevent the childs clothing from becoming soiled and the cup may be made of a non-breakable plastic in any desired color and can also be made in any desired size. The cover 15 is snugly mounted on the cup so that it will not accidentally come off. The recess 17 snugly receives the lip of the child. Thus, the cup will help prevent choking and will insure that all of the liquid enters the childs mouth. Also, the cover 15 may later be removed so that the cup body 10 can be used as a regular drinking cup, after the child masters the drinking technique.
I claim:
A childs drinking cup, comprising a body provided with an upper open end, said body being flared so that the lower end thereof is of greater diameter than the u per end thereof, a cover detachably mounted on the upper end of said body and provided with an elongated lip receiving recess, said recess becoming gradually shallower at its sides and ends until said sides and ends merge with the upper surface of the cover, there being an opening in said cover at the outer edge thereof for the egress therethrough of fluid, said opening permitting the fluid to pass into the childs mouth, said cover having an aperture therein spaced inwardly from the edge thereof, said opening permitting just enough fluid to pass to the childs mouth so that the child can drink the fluid with complete comfort without spilling, said aperture being arranged substantially at the center of the removable cover, said aperture and opening being separated from each other by said recess, an annular rim extending downwardly from said cover for snugly engaging the upper portion of said body, the lower edge of said rim lying in substantially the same plane as the bottom of said recess, said rim having a flaring shape so that the lower portion of the rim is of greater diameter than the upper portion thereof to conform to the configuration of the upper portion of the body, a bottom wall positioned on the lower end of said body and provided with an annular lip snugly seated within said body and secured thereto, said bottom wall having a greater diameter than the lower end of said body to increase the stability of the cup, said cover adapted to be removed from the body when the cup is to be refilled with fluid or when the cup is to be cleaned or when the cup is to be used as a regular drinking cup.
