This invention relates to fishing hook receptacles, and
more particularly to an improved container for snelled hooks. A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and lmproved container for snelled hooks, said container being simple in construction, providing easy access to the hooks contained therein, and being arranged so that the hooks may be readily inserted in the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved container for snelled hooks, said container being accessible position.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an improved container for snelled hooks constructed in accordance with the present lnvention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational view of the container of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the two segments of the container of Figures 1 and 2 in separated positions, the cover being shown in bottom perspective whereas the base element of the container is shown in top perspective view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical cross sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the container of Figure 1 with the cover removed.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary top plan view of a peripheral portion of a modified form of snelled hook container according to the present invention.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary top plan detail view showing a further modified form of the invention.
Figure 8 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail view taken on line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Referring to the drawings, the improvedsnelled hook container is designated generally at 11 and comprises a circular base member 12 formed with an inner upstanding annular flange 13 concentric therewith, said flange being formed with the regularly spaced notches 14. The notches 14 thus define 15. Formed on the base 12 outwardly adjacent the respective arcuate flange elements 15 are upstanding block elements 16 which are spaced apart by substantial distances, as illustrated. The base member 12 is further formed with the upstanding outer annular flange 18, said outer flange being formed with the notches 19 which are regularly spaced and are equal in number with the notches 14, thereby defining spaced arcuate outer wall elements 20'.
As is clearly shown in Figure 5, the respective notches 14 are inclined toward the spaces defined between the respective upstanding inner wall elements 15 and the blocks 16 adjacent thereto, and the notches 19 are respectively aligned with such spaces, so that a snelled hook, such as then extends downwardly a substantial distance in the spaced arcuate flange elements 2 the book 20 shown in dotted view in Figure 5, may be disposed in the manner illustrated, with the rigid hook portion engaged in a notch 14, the shank of the hook being disposed in the space between the arcuate wall element 15 and the block 16, and the leader 21 being en gageable through the aligned notch 19.
Designated at 22 is a circular cover member having a depending peripheral flange 23 which is receivable on an annular seat 24 provided on the peripheral edge of the base member 12. The cover 22 is formed with a depending central boss 25 which is tapped to receive a pivot screw 26 engaged through the center of the base 12, as shown in Figure 4. Thus, the cover 22 is rotatably secured to the base 12 for rotation around the axis of the central pivot screw 26.
The cover 22 is formed with a first depending annular rib 27 which is grooved at 28 to receive the top edge of the inner annular flange 13. The cover 22 is formed with a second depending annular rib 29 which is arranged to extend inwardly adjacent the top portion of the outer upstanding annular rib 18, as shown in Figure 4.
The cover 22 is formed with an aperture 30 generally similar in shape to but substantially larger than the shape of a fish hook, the aperture 30 being at times registrable with a hook 20 and a portion of its leader 21, in a manner shown in Figure 1. The rear portion of the leader 21 is received in the annular space 32 defined between the upstanding outer rib 18 and the depending flange 23 at the periphery of the cover 22.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the opening 30 in the cover 22 extends to the peripheral edge of the cover and depending peripheral flange 23, the flange 23 being thus formed with a generally triangular opening 33 which has a horizontal top portion 34 communicating with the main opening 30 in the top wall of cover 22, i i The horizontal surface of the annular seat 24 atlthe peripheral edge of base member 12 is formed withflthe spacedrecesses 35" adapted to be lockingly engaged by depending projections 36" on the bottom edge of flange 23 to releasably lock the cover 22 in positions wherein the opening 30 is in registry with a respective hook supported on the base member 12. i 4 r i The base member 12 and the cover 22fare preferably formed of transparent material, such as transparent plastic material, whereby the contents of the container will be visible at all times, and whereby the user may readily select a desired hook for extraction and may then rotate the cover 22 to aposition wherein the opening 30 is located in registry with said desired hook. 1 To load the container, the cover 22 is turned clockwise, as viewed in Figure 1, until the opening 30 is locatedirl registry with the space in which it is desired to place a snelled hook. The barbed end of the hook is then dropped through the opening 30 into said space, the hook being received in a notch 14 and the shank being received in the space between the arcuate wall element and the adjacent block 16, as above described, and the leader 21 beingreceived through a notch 19 in the outer flange18.
The outer portion of the leader21 is moved through'the horizontal portion 34 of the opening in the cover flange 23 and into the triangular portion or the opening33. *The outer portion of the the vertical shoulder leader may then be placed against 35 provided in the lower portion of opening 33 and the cover is then rotated clockwise,-as
as shown in Figure 1, wherein 22 is rotated clockwise, as viewed in Figure 1, to an unloading position wherein the opening 30 is in registry with the snelled hook 20 which it is desired to extract. The container is then inverted and tapped on the base 12 to loosen the-desired hook so that the hook maydropthrough the opening 30 or-may1be easily extracted therefrom. With the hook 20 removed from the container, the leader portion 21 of the snelled hook may be removed by a steady pull on the hook, holding the shank and pulling up, which will remove'the leader without injury to the snelled hook or container. A slight snapping noise will be audible when the knotof the-leader is pulled through the slot 19.
The alignment of the opening 30 with one of the snelled hook positions in the receptacle will beindicated by an audibleclick :produced by the engagement of the projecti'ons 236' in: recesses 35 provided therefor on the base member 12.
In themodified form of snelled hook container illustrated in 'Figure 6, theperipheral' shoulder 24' of the annular seat 24 is formed with the spaced detent notches 50, which are spaced in thesame manner as the recesses 35 in the previously described form of the invention. The depending peripheral flange 23 of the cover member 22 is notchedto define a resilient detent tongue 51 which is lockingly engageable in a selected notch 50 to yieldably hold the cover 22 in a position wherein the opening in said cover is in registry with a respective hook supported on the base member 12. Thus, the tongue 51 is employed in cooperation with the notches 50 in the same manner as the detent projection 36' and the recesses 35' of the .previously described form of the invention.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 7 and. 8, a-depending projection 60 is provided'on the bottom surface of the cover member22 whiehis en-. gageableagainst the ends of the respective-block elements 16 toiproperly locate the'opening 30 for the removal of or replacement of a snelled hook. This arrangement may be employed instead of 'the'arrangement of Figure 6.
It will be understood that the cover member 22 is suflieiently yieldable to allow the projection 60 to ride over the block elements 16 when sufficient torque is exerted on-said cover member relative to the base member 12.
While specific embodiments of an improved container for snelled hooks has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
Whatis claimed is: 1; A'snelled hook container comprising a circular base member, spaced upstanding generally triangular abutments on said base member defining seats therebetween for snelled hooks disposed with their hook portions arranged inwardly and their shank portions extending outwardlytowardthe periphery ofsaid base member, a peripheral wall on said 'base member having notches adapted to receive leaders from the snelled hooks, acircular cover rotatably secured on said base member, and a dependingperipheral flange on said cover spaced outwardly from said peripheral wall to define aspace to receive'the leaders, said cover being formed with an opening selectively registrable with the seats and of sufficient size'to allow passage-of a hook therethrough, said flange being formed with a leader-receiving aperture merging with said opening, whereby a snelled hook may be inserted-through saidopening with its leader extending through said aperture, the circular base member and cover being formed and arranged sothat by rotating the cover relative to the base member, the leader is drawn into the container in .a housed position proximate to the peripheral flange.
2. A snelled hook container comprising a circular base member, an upstanding annular inner flange on said base member, said inner flange being formed with notches, spaced upstanding generally triangular abutments on said base member spaced outwardly from said annular inner flange and defining seats therebetween for snelled hooks disposed with their hook portions arranged in said notches and their shank portions extending outwardly toward the periphery of said base member, an upstanding annular outer flange on said base member spaced outwardly of said abutments and having notches adapted to receive leaders from the snelled hooks, a circular cover rotatably secured on said base member, and a depending peripheral flange on said cover spaced outwardly from said outer flange to define a space to receive the leaders, said cover being formed with an opening selectively registrable with the seats and of suflicient size to allow passage of a hook therethrough, said flange being formed with a leader-receiving aperture merging with said opening, 7
whereby a snelled hook may be inserted through said opening with its leader extending through said aperture, the circular basemember and cover being formed and arranged so that by rotating the cover relative to the base member, the leader is. drawn into the container in a housed position proximate to the peripheral flange.
3. A snelled hook container comprising a circular base member, an upstanding annular inner flange on said base member, said inner flange being formed with notches, spaced upstanding generally triangular abutments on said base member spaced outwardly from said annular inner flange and defining seats therebetween for snelled hooks disposed with their hook portions arranged in said notches and their shank portions extending outwardly toward the periphery of said base member, an upstanding annular outerflange on said base member spaced outwardly of said abutments and having notches adapted to receive leaders from the snelled hooks, a circular cover, means rotatably connecting the cover to the base member at their center portions, and a depending peripheral flange on said cover spaced outwardly from said outer flange to definea space to receive the leaders, said cover being formed with an opening selectively registrable with the seats and of suificient size to allow passage of a hook veri tically therethrough, said opening extending through the peripheral edge of said cover and extending downwardly a substantial distance on said depending peripheral flange, whereby a snelled book may be inserted through said cover with its'leader extending through the portion of saidopening in said peripheral flange, the circular base member and cover being formed and arranged so that by rotating the cover relative to the base member, the leaders are drawn into the container in housed positions proximate to said depending peripheral flange.
