7 Claims. (Cl. 222-542) This invention relates to a container arranged with a spout in an end wall of the container adapted to dispense liquids, such as lubricating oil, lighter fluid and the like, and particularly to securing the spout in the container end wall.
It has been the practice to secure a tapering spout in a container end wall by providing the container end wall with an annular discharge neck and the spout with an enlarged cup like base at the larger end to fit over the container neck and the base is secured to the container neck by beading together juxtaposed portions of the neck and base.
Another known method of securing the tapering spout in the container end wall is to provide the end wall with a discharge neck arranged with an enlarged annular mouth portion and the spout with a shoulder spaced from the larger end positioned in the discharge neck of the container with the shoulder of the spout abutting the bottom wall of the enlarged mouth portion and secured therein by crimping the side wall of the enlarged annular mouth portion over the shoulder of the spout.
The disadvantages of these known methods of securing a spout in the end wall of a container are numerous and the most basic disadvantages are the number of steps required in forming the discharge neck and base portion of the spout which will increase the cost of manufacture; the discharge necks will prevent stacking of the container bodies upon each other for storage prior to securing the spouts to the container bodies; and it is not possible to produce a tight seal between the neck of the container and the spout.
It is the object of the present invention to secure a spout in the end wall of a container without the disadvantages of the prior methods by providing a depressed portion in the end wall of the container arranged with a discharge opening and a groove in the side wall of the depressed portion, and a spout arranged with a truncated conical shaped flange at one end to be engaged in the depressed portion of the container end wall and flattened out to increase the diameter thereof into the groove of the depressed portion to impinge the wall of said recess and firmly secure the spout in the container end wall.
To provide a liquid-tight seal, sealing means is placed in the depressed portion before engagement of the spout therein and which is compressed by the flattening out of the truncated conical shaped flange of the spout.
By the method of securing a spout in the end wall of a container of the present invention, the number of steps or operations is reduced thereby reducing the cost of manufacture; it is possible to stack the container bodies upon each other prior to securing the spouts thereto; and a tight seal is produced between the container end wall and the spout.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafiter described.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of the upper portion of the container partly in section showing the flanged end of the spout also partly in section engaged in the depressed portion of the container end wall and a tool engaged on the spout for flattening out the truncated conical shaped flange into the groove of the depressed portion as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing in section modified forms of the depressed portion in the end Wall of the container and of the truncated conical shaped flange shown in Figures 2 to 4, inclusive, to accommodate a sealing compound.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing the tool in operative position flattening out the flange and bottom wall of the depressed portion of the modified forms shown in Figure 5.
The embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 2 to 4, inclusive, comprises a sheet metal container body including a side wall 7 and end walls 8 and 9 secured to the opposite ends of the side wall in any suitable manner, such as rolling or crimping the edge portions of said walls together. The end Wall 8 constituting the top of the container is arranged with a depressed portion 10 having an opening 11 in the center of the bottom wall of the depressed portion to constitute the discharge opening of the container. The side wall of the depressed portion 10 adjacent to the bottom wall thereof is of increased diameter to form a recess or groove 12 therein. In the present embodiment of the invention, the depressed portion 10 is formed in the center of the end wall 8 of circular shape by a suitable die prior to assembling said endwall to the side wall 7.
Prior to the mounting of a spout in the depressed portion 10, sealing means, such as a rubber or composite cork gasket 13 of washer form, is inserted in the depressed portion 10 with the outer peripheral portion of the gasket engaged in the groove 12 to retain the gasket in the depressed portion. The retention of the gasket in the depressed portion by the groove 12 will permit storing in stacked formation of containers having gaskets assembled therein until it is desired to assemble the spouts in the depressed portions. The groove 12 will also prevent displacement of the gasket during the assembling of the spout in the depressed portion 10.
The spout of the present invention comprise-s a tubular body 14 tapering from a truncated conical shaped flange 15 to the discharge end of the spout. The discharge end of the spout is closed by a removable cap 16. The edge portion of the flange 15 is beveled in an arcuate direction to form a curved shoulder 17 and a sharp edge 18.
In assembling the spout to the container end Wall 8, the flange 15 is first engaged in the depressed portion upon the gasket 13, as shown in Figure 4. Subsequently pressure is progressively applied to the flange 15 to engage the sharp edge 18 against the outer peripheral portion of the gasket to compress said peripheral portion and permit flattening of the flange, complete compression of the gasket, impingement of the sharp edge 18 in the groove 12 and engagement of the curved shoulder 17 under the upper wall of the groove 12, as shown in 3 7 e9 Figure 2. The flattening'of the flange will increase the diameter thereof and impinge the curved shoulder 17 and sharp edge 18 into the groove 12. The pressure is applied in any suitable manner, such as by a tool in the form of a reciprocating hollow plunger 19 encircling the spout and having a head 20 abutting and forcingthe flange 15 against the gasket 13 and into the groove 12.
The material of the spout is of ductile or malleable composition, such as a lead alloy or aluminium, so that it will be readily flattened and retain its flattened condition. The material of the container end wall 8 is of relatively stiff material, such as sheet steel, which will not be deformed by the movement of the flange 15 in a radially outward direction, as shown in Figure 2.
In Figures 5 and 6, there is illustrated modified forms of the bottom wall of the depressed portion and the spout flange to accommodate a differentform of sealing means. In said figures, the end wall 8 is arranged with a deprcssedportion arranged with a groove 21 in the sidewall adjacent to a bottom wall 22 inclining from said groove to a discharge opening 23 to form a pocket or cavity for the deposit of a sealing compound, as shown at 24 in Figure 5.
:In Figures 5 and 6, the spout comprises a tubular body 25 tapering from a truncated conical shaped flange 26 having a uniform thickness and a curved edge, as shown at 27 in Figure 5. The spout 252'7 is secured in thedepressed portion 21, 22 by pressure applied by the reciprocating plunger 19, 20 to the flange 26 whereby said flange and the bottom wall 22 are flattened and the sealing compound 24 is spread out to form a sealing layer between the flange and the depressed portion, as shown at 28 in Figure 6.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. In a container of the character described, a mounting wall having a discharge opening therein and a de-' pressed annular seat wall portion surrounding the opening and defined outwardly by a circular wall presenting an outwardly and downwardly sloping overhang, sealing means on the annular seat wall portion and surrounding said opening, and a spout including a base flange peripherallyexpanded against said sloping overhang and held thereby in engagement with the sealing means with the sealing means deformed in sealing contact against said seat wall.
*2. Container structure as defined in claim 1 wherein the spout flange periphery is downwardly and outwardly curved and'te'rminates in a downwardly and outwardly directed sharp edge.
3. A spout of the character described comprising a tubular body having a shallow frusto-conical flange projectin'g' outwardly from the lower end thereof and being deformable so as to besubject to being flattened with an attending limited peripheral expansion without ruptur ing oi'the'continuity of its peripheral edge.
4, A spout as claimed in claim 3, wherein the edge portion of the flange is arranged with a curved shoulder and a sharp edge.
5. The herein described method of preparing a spout mounting on a metallic container which comprises preparing a wall of the container with a discharge opening and a depressed portion surrounding the opening and defined outwardly by a circular wall presenting an outwardly and downwardly sloping overhang, providing sealing means on the annular wall portion surrounding the opening, placing in the recess the truncated cone base of a spout with the periphery of the base dimensioned to just clear the circular overhang in entering the recess, and flattening said base to cause its periphery to expand and impinge the circular wall and cam downwardly against the overhang to firmly press and seal against the sealing means.
6. The herein described method of preparing a spout mounting on a metallic container which comprises preparing a wall of the container with a discharge opening and a depressed portion surrounding the opening and defined outwardly by a circular wall presenting an outwardly and downwardly sloping overhang, providing an annular deformable sealing ring on the annular wall portion surrounding the opening, placing in the recess the truncated cone base of a spout with the periphery of the base dimensioned to just clear the circular overhang in-entering the recess, and flattening said base to cause its periphery to expand and impinge the circular wall and cam downwardly against the overhang to firmly press down against the sealing ring and deform it and hold it in tight sealing contact against said discharge opening surrounding annular wall portion.
7. The herein described method of preparing a spout mounting on a metallic container which comprises preparing a wall of the container with a discharge opening and a depressed portion surrounding the opening and defined outwardly by a circular wall presenting an outwardly and downwardly sloping overhang, placing in the recess the truncated cone base of a spout with the periphery of the base dimensioned to just clear the circular overhang in entering the recess, and flattening said base to cause its periphery to expand and impinge the circular wall and cam downwardly against the overhang to firmly press against said discharge opening surrounding Wall portion.
