SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,248, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed July 8, 188:2. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it'known that I, ISAIAH SMITH HYATT, of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of (301- lars, Oufi's, &c., from Celluloid, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention has relation to improvements in the manufactureof collars, cufls, and analogous articles from the material known as celluloid and other compounds of pyroxyline.

Difficulty has heretofore been experienced in producing from pyroxyline material collars,

cuffs, and analogous articles of perfectly sat-- isfactory whiteness. To obviate this difficulty is the object of the invention, which is accomplished by using a backing or a filling of a blue tint instead of white, as has hereto: fore been customary.

In Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings a cuff is shown ill section as illustrating the use of the back or filling as I employ it. In Fig. 2, which is an end view, A denotes the filling, inclosed between two layers of white material, B (J.

In practice I take sheets of celluloid or other pyroxyline material, as they are customarily made when intended to be used in the manufacture of cuffs, collars, and similar articles, and secure them to the back or filling in any convenient and appropriate way, forming the article as may be desired. The only difference between my method and that now in vogue is that instead of usihg a white backing or filling I use one ofa blue shade or tint. I have found that a light shade of blue is to be desired, although I do not limit myself to any particular shade of blue or to any particular method of securing it in place.

WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A collar, cuff, or similar article made of celluloid or other compound of pyroxyline ill which a backing or a filling of a blue shadeor tint is employed, substantially ill the manner and for the purpose set forth.

In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing improvement in the manufacture of collars, cuffs, &c., from celluloid, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 13thday of May, 1882.
