UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KITTIL ANUNSEN, OF WINCHESTER, WVISOONSIN.
PITMAN FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,149, dated April 24, 1883.
Applicationfiled January 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KITTIL ANUNSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Winchester, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitmen for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in pitmen for cutter-bars for harvesters; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in
Figure 1 represents a side view of my pitman. Fig. 2 is a plan view, part sectional; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates the pitman-rod, which is provided with an arm or hearing, a, which is a part thereof, and projecting at right angles thereto, and having the same thickness in diameter from the point a to the opposite portion, 7), and a smooth outer surface, I).
B indicates the cutterbar, having the knives b and provided with an enlargement, c, in
which is a perforation, c, to receive the arm a, and in which the latter works in forming a joint between the pitman and the cutter-bar. Said cutter-bar is provided with a projection, d, at its end, in which is a vertical passage, df, that communicates with a horizontal passage, c, that leads from the former passage to the connecting-joint of the pitman and cutter-bar, whereby the joint is lubricated. At the opposite end, of the pitman the same is provided with a projection, f, having a vertical passage, 9, that connects with a horizontal way, g, which leads to the opening or hearing h, through which the bolt ipasses, that connects the pitman with the eccentric i, by means of which and through the medium of a harvester-gearing the cutter-bar is operated. The arm or hearing a is provided with a perforation, j, extending from end to end, through which a bolt, j, passes, and by means ofwhich this end of the pitman is connected to the cutter-bar B. A washer, k, is placed upon the arm a, between the rod or pitman and cutterbar, and washers is k are also placed upon the bolt i, on each side of the pitman, at the end f. Y
It will be observed from the above description and by reference to the annexed drawings that the construction 0t my pitman and cutter-bar is such that a close joint is formed, and by means of the bolt j and washers k k k all sidewise movement of the pitman is avoided; also, it will be seen that the washer k on the pitman-arm or hearing a is placed on one side ofthe cutter-bar, while the head of the boltj is on the opposite side, both thus serving to strengthen and brace the joint, and by means of the washers klc the opposite end of the pitman is prevented from loose or lateral motion, and the arm a, it will be noticed, forms a broad bearing for the joint, and at the same time relieves the boltj from all strain or wear.
I am aware that prior to my invention pitmen have been constructed with the arm or bearing made in one piece with the pitman and perforated for the passage of a bolt, and tapering from the rod to the outer end; and am also aware that a similar hearing or arm, provided with a groove around the outside, in which works the point of a screw or pin passing through the cutter-bar, and by means of which the pitman is held to the cutter-bar, is old; hence I do not claim the device herein described, broadly; but
What I do claim is The combination, with the cutter-bar B, having the enlargement c, perforation c, and lubricating-passages d and e, of the pitman A, having the bearing a, formed in one piece and at right angles thereto, perforated at j, the bolt j, and washer k, the whole constructed and combined as shown, and operating as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KITTIL ANUNSEN.
