DUANE B. OOOLEY, OF YANKTON, DAKOTA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-HALF TO JOHN O. BATES, OF SAME PLACE.
PAD-SCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,135, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed October 23, 1882. (No model.) I
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. B. OOOLEY, a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Yankton, in the county of Yankton and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad-Screws, of which the following is a s1,)ecit1'cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in pad-screws; and it consistsin the screw A,the head of which has formed thereon the rectangular projection a, and is also provided with the curvilinear recesses b; and in the nut B, having sharp-pointed projections O; and in the combination and arrangement of theparts, as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
The screw A, for the reception of the nutB, is provided wit h the rectangular projection a, which enables the screw to be rotated with the tiugers at first, when screwing it into the pad,and then aft'ordsa purchasefor the pinchers with which it is afterward screwed home. The head thus constructed also obviates the necessity of the transverse groove or indentation formed upon the head of screws ordinarily, as bearings for the screw-driver, which are objectionable because of their unpolished appearance and liability to fill with dirt. The lower face of the screw-head is a flat disk, as shown, which has provided therein the curvilinear depressions b, which deepen from the rim of the disk toward the shank of the screw. The depressions are designed for reception of the elastic leather of the pad. When the leather is compressed by the disk it is thus forced therein and prevents any possible rotation of the screw.
B represents a nut having the sharp-pointed projections c and the orifices e and e. The projections are designedto puncture the pad and prevent rotation and consequent loosening of the nut, the head of the screw being rigidly secured against rotation by the curvilinear depressions b, aforesaid.
Thus constructed it will be impossible for the screw to become loosened as obtains with the ordinary pad-screw.
I am aware that screw-bolts and nuts for securing them, having pointed orjagged faces, in connection with washers having corresponding indentations, are not new, and therefore I do not broadly claim the same.
\Vhat Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a pad-screw, the combination of thescrew A, havingacircular head with a rectangular top projection, as shown, said head having on its under face curvilinear depressions, as described, with the screw-threaded nut B, formed as described, and having pointed projections on its upper face, substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DUANE B. OOOLEY.
