BENJAMIN F. WRIGHT, OF HARTWELL, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO JAMES P. RAYMOND, OF SAME PLACE.
FLYING TARGET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,125, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed August 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartwell, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, I
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flying Targets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of flying targets which consist of concavo-convex shells adapted to be thrown into the air with a sudden spinning motion. Its object is to dispense with extraneous attachments for the purpose of giving the target its rotary motion, which attachments require a'speoial trap to throw the target and cause an unsteady wabblingmotion by throwing the target outot balance. The tongues commonly used to project the target sustain the full force of the throw, and as the targets are usually made of a fragile material, the tongues frequently become detached and the target broken before the spring-arm of the trap has reached the limit of its movement, causing great annoyance to the marksman. I overcome these difficulties and dispense with the labor and expense of attaching the tongues by notohing the periphery of the target, so as to engage the end of a strap or band, which is wound around the edge of the target, and, by unwinding, as the target leaves a flat holder attached to the spring-arm of the trap gives the desired springing motion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is an axial section of my improved target. Fig. II is a top plan View of the same, and Fig. III 5 is an elevation of a modified form of thetarget.
In Figs. I and II the shellAhas a flange, B, projecting from its lower edge. This flange is notched at G, leaving a hooked tooth, b, which is intended to engage the slotted end of a strap 4.0 or band which is tightly wound partially around the periphery of the flange. The opposite end of the strap (which is not here shown) is so attached to the spring-arm of a target-trap, which is provided with a flat plate, 5 upon which the target rests, that when the arm is thrown and suddenly arrested the target will be projected with a spinning motion.
In the form shown in Fig. III the flange B is dispensed with and a notch or depression, 50 (1, made in the lower edge, into which the free end of the strap or be nd is inserted, after which, by turning the target upon its holder, the band is wound partially around the edge of the target.
I claim as my invention- A flying target consisting of aconcavo-convex shell, the rim of which is provided with a notch, formed substantially as described, to receive and hold a strap or cord drawn tan- 6o gentially with relation to said rim.
BENJAMIN F. WRIGHT.
