HORACE E. wELLs, OE CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DISINFECTING lWA'l'ER-CL'OSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 276,106, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed October 2G, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HORACE E. WELLS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Weten Closets; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a t'ull, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mechanism l'or distributing disinfectants or deodorants, or both, and also for measuring liquids when so de sired; and it consists of parts and combinations ot' parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings is shown my invention as applied to waterclosets, and also as applied to measuring liquids, although the same mechanism is applicable to other purposes and to other places where it is desired to use liquid disint'ectants or deodorants.v
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of my invention, showing also a vertical sectional View of the bowl and other fixtures of a water-closet Fig. 2 is a viewin vertical section of the device shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of one part of the device shown in Fig. l.
In the drawings, A A represent a case, of any desired material or construction, with the i'ront part removed, in which the mechanism may be placed.
B is a containingtank l'or storing liquid disinfectants or deodorants suitable for use in the soil-bowls of water-closets.
C is a vertical cylinder or well connected with .tank B, and provided with an orice or orifices, It R It, leading from the tank B, through which the liquid may flow to the well C. The well C may be provided with a spout or equivalent discharging-outlet, D. rlhe well C has a loose-fitting plunger, G, attached by the rod or connection H to the lever I 1. The lever I I is fulcrumed at J, and has attached at one end the weight L. The other end of the lever I I is connected by the chain M M and the bell-crank N to O, the cover of the water-closet. The attachment of the chain M M to the cover O is made a shortdistance from the hinges of the cover O.
The operation ot the device is as follows:
When the cover O is shutdown the end of the lever II thatis attached to the cover O by the chain ill M and the bell-crank N is drawnldown. When the cover O is raised the chain M M is loosened, and the end ot' the lever I I to which the weight L is attached is drawn down by the gravity ot' the weight L. This operation ot' the lever I I by means ot' the connection H alternately raises and lowers the plunger G. When the plunger G is thus raised out ofthe well C the liquid in the tank B flows by its own gravity into the well C, bubbles of air passing at the same time back into the tank through orifices R lt 1t, taking the place ot the receding liquid. When the liquid has risen in the Well until the orifices are covered no more air can then pass into the tank. Consequently no more liquid can tlow from the tank without causing'a partial vacuum, which of course the atmospheric pressure would prevent. When the plunger G descends into the well C it displaces a portion ot' the liquid in the well and causes an overllow of the liquid into the outlet D. A
When it is desired to use two kinds ot liquidsthe one kind suitable for disinfecting the soil-bowls ot' vwaterclosets and vthe other liquid'suitable for disinfecting or deodorizing the air in the room-then in that case two tanks are used, and the one tank may be placed above the other. In such case both tanks are provided with a well, G, aspout, D, a plunger, G, and attachments, as heretofore described. 1n such case the spout D of the lower wellterminates in the pipe P, which conveys the liquid to the bowl ofthe water-closet Q, and the spout D of the upper well discharges theliquid upon an apron, S, made ot' cloth or other suitable material, when the said liquid is left to evaporate and disinfect or deodorize the room. When it is desired to use the apparatus for measuring liquids from the tank the plunger G should be made of such a size as to displace a given quantity of liquid-such, for example, as one ounce; and in place of` the attachment M M the lever I I may be worked by the handle F.
A graduating-scale, U, may be used in combination with the handle F and lever I I. The lever I I being connected to the plunger G by the attachment H, as aforesaid, it follows that graduating the stroke of the lever will also to the well, and a plunger for forcing theliquid from the well by displacement.
2. The combination, with the supply-tank and a we'll secured tothe side of' the said tank and in communication therewith by a series of oritices, ot' a plunger for displacingr the liquid in the well, the connecting-rod H, weighted level` I, and connecting,` mechanism for moving the plunger simultaneously with the lid of the closet, substantially as set forth.
3. rIhe combination, with the supply-tank, the well secured thereto and in communication therewith by suitably-arranged oritices, whereby the flow of liquid from the supply-tank is controlled, and a plunger adapted to displace the liquid i1 1 the well, ofthe lever I, weight L,
` connecting-rod H, connecting mechanism M,
bellcrank N, and the closet-cover O, all of the above parts constructed and adapted to operate as described.
et. The combination, with the supply-tank and a Well situated alongside the same and in communication therewith by suitably-arranged oritices, oil a measuring-plunger adapted to move in the said well and discharge the contained liquid by displacement, the connectingrod H, the lever I, and the graduated scale U, all of the above parte combined and adapted to operate as described.
5. The combination, with devices for supplying; a water-closet bowl with disenfectant, of a supply-tank, a well situated alongside of the same and in communication therewith, a plunger for displacingthe liquid in the well, and au apron on which the disinfectant falls, substantially as set forth.
-ln testimony whereol" I sign this specification, in the presenceof two witnesses, this 19th day ot` October, 1882.
