PUTTY KNIVES Harley D. Smith, Moline, Ill. Application February 1, 1954, Serial No. 407,314
Claims. (Cl. 183.5)
My invention relates to a putty knife having an adjustable smoothing member mounted thereon.
The objects of my invention are to provide a putty knife with a blade which can be used in the ordinary way for applying the putty to a Window but having a longitudinal slot formed therein in combination with a movable plate member having a corresponding slot parallel with the slot in the blade, with means for securing the movable member upon the blade whereby it may be adjusted longitudinally of the blade, also to provide a movable member with one portion of the same width as the blade, but with its outer end formed at an oblique angle longitudinally so that it may be adjusted to project at variable distances beyond the outer end of the blade and used for the purpose of smoothing or leveling the surface of the putty after the putty has been applied to the window sash by the blade. The putty may be smoothed by the projecting oblique portion of the movable member while the end of the blade may be held in contact with the surface of the sash; also to provide such means in a form whereby the blade may be held at a right angle to the sash while the oblique member is applied to the putty or if desired, the knife-blade may be inclined in either direction to facilitate the smoothing action of the oblique member.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of the blade with the movable member in retracted position;
Figure 2 is a view of the knife with the movable member extended and applied to the putty upon a window sash;
Figure 3 is an edge view of the knife with the movable member shown in Figure 2.
My knife comprises a handle 1 which may be of wood or metal and may have the blade 3 mounted therein and held by a ferrule 2 or the handle may be formed of metal integral with the blade 3.
The outer end of the blade is squared so that its outer edge extends at a right angle to its longitudinal axis as in the case of an ordinary putty knife, and when the movable member is retracted, it may be used in the same manner that an ordinary putty knife is used.
The blade has a longitudinal slot 8 formed therein in which a small set screw or pin 6 is slidable and with its threaded end threaded into a suitable bore in the movable member 4.
The movable member 4 is formed of a plate prefer ably of the same material and thickness as the blade and has a slot 7 formed therein in which a pin or set screw 5 slides and the threaded end of which is secured in a threaded bore formed in the blade. Thus the movable member is slidable lengthwise of the blade and the outer nited States Patent 0 end of the blade may be drawn along in contact with the edge of the sash 9 in which the putty 11 has been placed, which is contacted by the projecting angular end of the plate 4 which extends to the glass 10.
In the operation of my device the putty is first applied to the sash in the usual way by the blade with the movable member retracted as shown in Figure 1. After the putty has been applied in the usual way, the movable member is moved outwardly so that the angular end thereof projects beyond the outer edge of the blade 3. The end of the blade 3 is then applied to the surface of the sash 9 and drawn along the sash with the angular end of the movable plate 4 resting upon or in contact with the putty 11. When so applied and drawn along, it will smooth the outer surface of the putty and reduce it to uniform thickness and conformation.
Some modifications may be made in the size, proportions and shape of the various members without departing from the spirit of my invention as shown in the claims and I do not limit my claims to the precise forms shown in the drawings.
I claim:
1. A putty knife having a thin blade united to a handle with the outer end of the blade formed at a right angle to the longitudinal portion thereof, a thin plate member adjustably mounted upon the blade and movable longitudinally thereof, having an oblique front edge adapted to project beyond the end of the blade when extended and usable to smoothe putty applied to the window sash while the end of the blade is moved in contact with and parallel to the face of the sash.
2. A putty knife as described in claim 1, said plate member having a width corresponding to the blade, and means to adjust the plate member longitudinally of the blade.
3. A putty knife as described in claim 2, said means including corresponding slots in the blade and plate sevorally and pins threaded into the blade and plate respectively and adapted to travel in said slots.
4. A putty knife as described in claim 3, said plate member being adapted to be retracted until completely covered by the blade.
5. A putty knife having a thin blade united to a handle with the outer end of the blade formed at a right angle to the longitudinal portion thereof, a thin plate member adjustably mounted upon the blade and movable longitudinally thereof, having an oblique front edge, said plate member adapted to be retracted until completely covered by the blade and to be extended to project at variable distances beyond the end of the blade and adapted when so projecting for use in smoothing putty previously applied to the sash, the blade being adapted to be moved with its outer end in contact with the face of the sash to act as a gauge simultaneously with the movement of the plate member in smoothing the putty.
