Description

May 9, 1950 L. R. SMITH PAPER HANGERS TOOL Filed Oct. 8, 1946 Patented May 9, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in tools, more specifically, in tools such as are commonly employed by paper hangers, or the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which embodies in its construction a combined smoothing brush and a rule.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool which, by virtue of its construction, will substantially increase the speed with which the paper hanging operation is performed, it being noteworthy that a, rule, when extended beyond one end of the handle, comprises a spacer guide of variable length for frictionally engaging a wall or other surface, as in applying adhesive on a strip spaced from the wall or other surface a distance less than the length of the rule.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool which is simple in construction and which may be easily manipulated.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a tool which will not easily become damaged and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, exploded perspective view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Fig re 1.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a paper hangers tool designated generally by the reference character 5, the same embodying in its construction a pair of complemental sections 6 and I separably connected together and constituting an elongated handle 8.
The handle section I is configurated substantially as shown and the section 6 is secured thereto by a plurality of suitable bolts or screws 9.
It will be also noted that the section 6 is provided with a formation of bristles I 0, these being arranged in one or more rows, and constituting a smoothing brush such as is commonly employed by paper hangers.
The essence of the invention resides in the provision of a dove-tailed groove I I in each of the two relatively opposite side surfaces I2 of the handle 8, the grooves I I preferably being disposed at the junction of the contacting edges of the sections 6 and 1, as is best shown in Figure 3.
A bevel edged, graduated rule I3 is slidably positioned in each of the grooves I I and. the surfaces I2 of the handle 8 are inscribed with graduated scales I 4 adjacent the rules, as will be clearly understood. The rules I3 are also provided with suitable notches 15, whereby the sliding thereof may be conveniently effected. Adjustment of screws 9 allow for variation of the gripping action of the sections on the rules.
When the invention is placed in use, either or both of the rules I3 may be employed for measuring the width or length of wallpaper required to cover irregularly shaped areas, such as portions of walls adjacent doors, windows, and the like. If the length of the rule or rules I3 is insufficient for certain measurements, the rule is simply slid in the groove 1 I and the appropriate reading is taken with respect to both the graduations on the rule and the graduated scale It. The rules are also useful as spacer guides for frictionally contacting a wall or other surface so that the bristles are spaced from the wall or surface a desired reasonably accurately predeterminable distance during the application of adhesive to a strip spaced a short distance from said wall or surface.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and. scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
A paper hangers tool, comprising an elongated handle in two complemental sections, a formation of bristles at one longitudinal edge of one of said sections, the other of said sections being bevel rabbeted on the edge thereof adjacent said one section so that a longitudinally extending groove is provided on the side of the handle, a graduated rule slidably positioned in said groove and extensible in either direction beyond the ends of the groove, adjustable means securing the two complemental sections together so that the gripping action of the sections on the rule can be varied.
