3 Claims. (Cl. 4--187) This invention relates to sink mountings, and more particularly to means for mounting a sink in an opening in a drainboard.
Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of means for mounting a sink, of the type having a flange around its rim, in an opening in a drainboard, which makes it possible easily to install the sink in the drainboard entirely from above the latter after the drainboard has been installed; the provision of a mounting of this class which is adapted for the installation of sinks of various thicknesses; the provision of a mounting of this class adapted for making a waterproof installation of the sink in the opening in the drainboard; and the provision of a mounting having the stated features which is economical to manufacture. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.

Referring to the drawings, reference character 1 designates a conventional sink of a type having an outwardly projecting flat flange 3 all around its rim. As herein illustrated, the sink is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It is shown as mounted in an opening 5 in a drainboard 7. The latter is illustrated as consisting of the usual plywood board with a facing 9 of a material such as linoleum, or one of the plastics such as the one sold under the trade name Formica. The opening 5, as cut in the board 7, corresponds in outline to the outline of the edge of the flange 3, being somewhat larger than the latter for receiving a frame 11. This frame comprises a metal ring of rectangular outline. The internal dimensions of the frame correspond to the outside dimensions of the sink flange 3 with some clearance; and the frame is adapted to receive the sink from above. The opening 5 is cut in accordance with the external dimensions of the frame with some clearance; and the frame is adapted to be set into the opening from above. The frame may v openings 27 and 29 at the inside of the frame.

The frame has an outwardly projecting upper flange 13 adapted to bear on the top of the drainboard surrounding the opening 5. The frame is of substantial thickness and has screw holes 15 for receiving screws 17 threaded into the edge of the drainboard around the opening 5 for securing the frame in place in the opening. In the inside face of the frame adjacent its upper edge is a groove 19 adapted to receive a metal sealing ring 21. The ring has a downturned flange or lip 23 at its inner edge. It is resilient and is split as indicated at 25 so that it may be collapsed to be sprung into the groove. As indicated in Fig. 2, the downward lip 23 engages the top of the sink flange 3 When the sink is placed at a proper elevation by properly positioning supporting means 31, to be described.
The frame 11 is provided with an upper set of openings 27 and a lower set of openings 29, each opening adapted to receive a sink-supporting lug 31. As shown in Fig. 4, each opening 27 is triangular form, having an upper side 33 (which may be coincident with the lower edge of the groove 19) and two equal sides 35 which converge toward one another in downward direction to a lower apex 37. The set of openings 27 are all of the same size and are located in a common horizontal plane. The sides 35 of the openings are bevelled to diverge away from one another in outward direction with respect to the frame. The openings 29 are identical to the openings 27 and are located in a common horizontal plane below the plane of the series of openings 27. The upper side of each opening 29 is designated 39, its convergent and bevelled sides are designated 41, and its lower apex is designated 43. Openings 27 and 29 are provided in both the sides and ends of the frame. For example, for mounting a sink thirty-two inches long and twenty-one inches wide, there may be four openings 27 and four openings 29 in each long side of the frame, and three openings 27 and three openings 29 in each short side or end of the frame.
The mounting includes a number of the lugs 31 corresponding to the number of openings 27 or 29. Thus, in the above-stated case, fourteen lugs would be provided. As shown best in Figs. 3, 6 and 7, each lug 31 is of triangular cross-section corresponding to the shape of the One side of the lug, designated 45, constitutes its top surface, and its sides are each designated 47. The lug at one end has bevelled grooves 49 adapted to interfit with the bevelled sides of the openings 27 and 29 (see Fig. 3).
Installation of a sink utilizing the mounting means of this invention may be readily carried out after the opening 5 has been cut in the drainboard and subsequent to the installation of the drainboard, as follows:
The frame 11 is set into the opening 5 from above the drainboard, its flange 13 bearing upon the drainboard around the opening. The screws 17 are driven into the drainboard to hold the frame in place. Then, depending on whether the sink flange is relatively thin or relatively thick, 21 set of the lugs 31 is inserted in either the series of openings 27 or the series of openings 29. In the case of a sink with a relatively thin flange, the set of lugs is fitted in the upper set of openings 27, and in the case of a sink with a relatively thick flange, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the set of lugs is fitted in the lower set of openings 29. Insertion of each lug in an opening in the frame may be readily accomplished from above simply by reaching down into the frame, inserting the lug endwise in the opening, and then seating the lug by moving it laterally with respect to the length of the ing and downward with respect to the frame to the position such as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This locks the lug to the frame.
