Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YVILLARD A. BATES, OF PRINCETON, MAINE.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,878, dated April 1'7, 1883.
Application filed October 11, 1852. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD ALBERTUS BATES, of Princeton, in the county of VVashington and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide means for fastening neck ties or bows in place, asasubstituteforthedeviees usuallyemployed, and which will allow the tie or bow to be more convenientlyapplied and removed than hereto fore.
This invention consists in the combination, with a neck tie or bow, of a flexible tube which in use passes over the collar-button and is retained thereon by its elasticity, the outer end of the tube being closed tightly, so that the suction shall assist in holding the tube in place upon the button, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents the flexible tube detached. Fig. 3 shows the cap, and Fig. at the collar, of the tube. Fig. 5 is a section of the tie and tube. Figs. 6 and 7 show the slide used with the tie-band.
A represents a tie or bow provided with aband, 0, for passing around the neck.
a is the holding-tube, which consists of a short piece of flexible rubber tubing closed at one end and formed with a flange, as shown, and fitted at that end with a collar, b, and cap 0. (Shown separated in Figs. 3 and i.) The cap and collar are made of metal or other suitable material, and are fitted tightly to the end of the tube. The tube a is attached at the center of the bow A, so as to be covered by the material thereof, and with its open end at the back of the bow. Upon the back of the bow, at one side of the tube,is attached a hook,f, and upon the band 0 is a slide, (1, formed with a loop for engaging the book. The slide d is slotted for receiving the band and bent double to clamp the band securely.
To attach the bow or tie the open end of the flexible tube A is passed over the head of the collar-button, and, being somewhat smaller than the same in diameter, closes tightly thereon. At the same time, the tube being closed at its outer end, the air pressure or suction will assist in retaining the tube upon the button. The slide dis then adjusted on the band and caught on the hook f, so as to draw the band tightly, and thus assist in holding the bow in its proper place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The combination, with a necktie, of a flexible tube having a closed end for passing over the collar-button and retaining the tie thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. The flexible tube a, provided with collar b and cap 0, in combination with a necktie, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a bow provided with a band, 0, and hookf, of the slide (1 on the said band, substantially as herein shown and described.
\VILLARD ALBERTUS BATES.
