UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. ABBOTT, OF EIAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVICE FOR ATTAGHING NECKTIES TO CQLLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,876, dated April 17, 1883. Application filed February 19, 1881. Renewed February 15, 1883. (ModelJ To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, GEORGE F. ABBOTT, 0t Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Neckties to Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being bad to theaccompanyingdrawings, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in devices for attaching neckties to collars; and it consists in a piece of wire or sheet metal having both ends sharpened, and which is attached to the outer side of the neckband of the collar, so as to form both a keeper and a guide to the necktie, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to make a cheap and simple attachment which can be readily applied to collars, and which will not only serve to keep the necktie in position, but enable it to be drawn back and forth through the collar at the will of the wearer.
Figure 1 is a perspective .view of my devices unattached. Fig. 2 shows a collar opened out and having a necktie attached thereto.
I take a piece of wire or sheet metal of suitable length and bend each erid into a small hook. This hook may be formed by making the two angular bends as shown in Fig. 1; or the hook may be formed by curving the ends over; but in either case there must be room enough to allow the tie to slip freely through in either direction. end will be simply sharpened, so that they will readily catch in the outside of the neckband of the collar; but where sheet metal is used either one or two sharp points may be made on each end, and these points will catch in the collar. The hooks on the ends are made wide enough so that when hooked in the collar they will not bring the body too close to the neckband, and thus prevent the free passage of the necktie back and forth through it. These devices A, whether made from wire or sheet metal, form guides and keepers to hold the necktie in place on the collar, and allow the tie to be pulled back and forth for the purpose of adjusting its ends and without having the tie get out of place. By means of two of these devices the tie can be attached to the collar in such a manner that the collar can be removed and laid aside without the tie becoming displaced in the slightest degree.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of a collar, a necktie, and the device A, having its ends bent into sharppointe'd hooks for catching in the collar, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE FREMONT ABBOTT.
