(Cl. 259-179) This invention relates generally to material mixing machines for the mixing of paving and road building materials, etc. and relates more particularly to improvements in such mixing machines, particularly of the pugmili type.
Mixing machines of this character must be rugged and sturdy so as to withstand the severe abrasive action of sharp, fast moving abrasives to which. they are subjected. Because of such severe abrasive action, the parts tend to wear through and generally it is very dificult and expensive to replace the parts, particularly the large sections which comprise the sides and bottom of the mixer body. Heretotore, in many mixing machines, large mixer `sections must be thrown away when a spot has worn through although otherwise there may be substantial wear remaining in said sections. Also when replacing parts of the mixer body, it is often necessary for workmen to get into the body and work among the paddles, a procedure which may result in injury to such workmen.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a mixing machine wherein the foregoing disadvantages are substantially eliminated.
lt is a further object of the invention to provide a machine of this character having externally removable wearing sections.
It is still another object ot the invention to provide a machine of this character wherein such sections are small enough for one man to handle.
A further object of this invention is to provide a machine of this character having small wearing sections preciscly machine-ground on their edges and lands so as to insure a close leak-proof t' and also to assure the required uniformity of size so that when placed side by side in position within the mill ends, their accumulated ends will fall within certain tolerance requirements.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral indicates the mixer body generally. The body comprises upper side pieces 16 and end sections 17. The upper or top side pieces 16 have their lower edges in a horizontal plane through the axes of the shafts' 18,'thc mounting of said shafts being hereinafter more full described. The mixer body has a false bottom, indicated generally at 20 which comprises a pair of plates 21 arranged anularly relative to each other to form a wide inverted V in cross-section. The plates 21 are welded or otherwise suitably secured together along their joining edges as at 22 and there is an opening 21a in said plates centrally of the mixerbody. Adjacent their outer side edges, the plates 21 are welded, as at 23, to the upper edges of upright sides 24 of angle irons, indicated generally at 2S, said angle irons extending longitudinally of the mixer body and secured at the ends to downwardly extending plates 26 forming part of the framework supporting the mixer. The horizontal sides 27 of the angle irons 2S are spaced upwardly of the bottom of the plates 26 which have reinforced vertical edges 2S and horizontal edges 29. The angle irons are spaced laterally apart type of body wearin substantially parallel relationship to each other and have secured thereto rails 30, said rails being attached by means of bolts 31 and being spaced from the upright sides Z4 by spacer members 32. The rails have means for adjusting same vertically, said means comprising bolts 33 threadably received in laterally extending brackets 34, welded or otherwise suitably secured to the sides 24. T he brackets 34 are on the inner sides of said angle iron sides 24. Secured to the respective inner sides of the rails 30, by means of the bolts 31, are support members 36. A gate 38 is slidably mounted on the rails 30 and said gate is in the shape of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the angularity of the gate being the same as the angie formed by the plates 21, said gate being slidable beneath the plates 21 and held against lateral movement by depending flanges 39 which slide along the inner sides of the rails Sii. The gate has webs 40 within the V and is connected to a piston, not shown, by means of a piston rod 42 which is secured to one of the webs 4i). The piston is adapted to reciprocate within a cylinder 43 supported on the support members which have end portions extending longitudinally outwardly of one end or the mechanism. lt is to be noted that there is a cross member 44 adjacent the mixer body and a cross member 45 adjacent the outer ends of said support members 36, the respective ends of the cylinder 43 being attached lto said cross members 44 and 45. The piston in the cylinder 43 may be actuated by any suitable means such as steam or air or hydraulically as by water or oil. It is to be understood, of course, that other suitable power means may be used.
The lower portions of the sides and bottom of the mixer body comprise wearing sections indicated generally at and 51 respectively, said segments being shown separately in Figs. 7 and 8. The segments 59 are located adjacent the ends of the mixer body and have portions 52 which extend from the said horizontal plane through the axes of the shafts 18 arcuately downward and terminate at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions 53 which have flat lower surfaces 54 which rest upon the upper surfaces of the plates 21. As best shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4, the inner ends 55 of the end portions 53 are adjacent cach other. Each'of the segments is provided with marginal flanges which extend outwardly of the portion 52, there being an end flange and side flanges 61 with a connecting flange 62 adjacent the lower end of the portion 52.
Each of the top side pieces 16 is provided with an external flange 63 along the lower edge and the segments 50 are secured to said flange by means of bolts 64 which are received in openings 65 of the flanges 6i) of said segments Sil, there being corresponding openings in the flange 63 for reception of the bolts 64. The llauges 61 of the segments 50 are provided with bolt openings 66. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that there are twosegments 50 adjacent the respective ends of the mixer body on each side thereof. The segments Sil at the ends of the mixer body are secured to the adjacent end sections 17 by means of bolts 68 which are received in the respective openings 66 of the segments 50 and corresponding openings in the end sections.
Each of the segments 50 is also provided with an external lug 70 having a recess 71 facing outwardly toward the adjacent side of the machine and the bottom wall 72 of the lug 70 is no-tched at 73 for reception of a tie bolt 74, the head of said bolt being received in the recess 71. The tie bolts 74 are also received in openings provided therefor in the bottom side 27 of the angle irons 25 and are secured by suitable nuts which, when tightened, draw the ends 53 of the segments 50 tightly against' the plates 21. The adjacent segments 50 are also secured together by means of bolts 68 which secure the ilanges 61 of said segments tightly together.
The segments 51 are similar to segments Si) but the lower ends, indicated at 75, which rest on the plates 21 are shorter, said ends 75 extending only to the side edges of the opening 76. The opening 76 registers with the opening 21a and the two provide a discharge opening through which materials may be discharged, said discharge opening being controlled by the gate 38. The segments 51 are secured to the flanges 63 in a manner similar to the securing of the segments 50 thereto and the abutting segments are secured to each other and to the adjacent segments 50 by means of bolts 63. The segments 51 also have the lugs 7) so that they may be secured to the lower walls 27 of the angle irons 25 by means of bolts 74 as in the case of the segments 5i). The ends 75 of the segments 51 are secured tightly against the upper surface of the plates 21 between the sides of the opening 76 and the adjacent longitudinal side edges of said plates 21.
End liners are provided for each of the ends of the mixer body, said end liners being in sections as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5. There are an upper series of liner sections, indicated at 78, 79, 80, 81 and 82 and a lower series of end liner sections indicated respectively at 83, 84, 85 and 86. The various liner sections are secured to the adjacent ends 17 by bolts 87. The portions of the liner sections adjacent the shaft openings 89 are cut out to provide corresponding openings for reception of the shafts, and collars 90 are disposed adjacent the end liners. With this arrangement the collars help carry the mixer Shaft end thrust and also prevent leakage of line material through the mixer and shaft outlets.
The shafts are mounted in bearings 92 adjacent their respective ends and said shafts, at one end of the machine have portions 93 which extend outwardly of the adjacent bearings 92 for reception of gears 94 and 95 which mesh so that the shafts 18 rotate together in timed relationship, this arrangement being necessary to prevent the blades 96 on the respective shafts from striking each other during operation of the machine.
The mechanism is connected to a source of power, not shown, by means of a shaft 98 having a pinion 99 thereon which meshes with the gear 95, as shown in the drawings. The bearings are supported by a supporting frame, indicated generally at 100, adjacent the outer sides of the ends 17.
It is to be noted that the plates 21, which comprise the false center bottom, are secured by welding or other suitable means to the ends 17 thereby forming a tie between the ends. The plates also provide a bottom support for the liner segments.
Referring to Figs. 10 and l1, there is shown an arrangement for compensating for variations in the thickness of the liner segments and also showing an alternative arrangement for attaching the liners.
ln Fig. l0, the liner segment 50a does not have the integral marginal flanges as in the liner segment 50; however, there is a frame indicated generally at which extends marginally of the liner and which includes a part 121 which engages a land 122 of the segment 50a, the part 121 being secured to the liner by bolts 123 having heads 124 received in recesses 125 provided in the segment 50a, said recesses extending from the inner side of the segment and having a reduced diameter portion 126 which registers with an opening 127 in the part 121. The bolts are secured by means of nuts 128. The frame 120 includes an outwardly extending flange 130 so that said frame comprises an angular member in cross section. The flange 130 of the frame is secured to the mixer end section 17 by means of bolts 132.
The arrangement of removable flanges formed by the frame, which takes the place of the integral flanges of the liner sections hereinabove described serves to re duce weight and increase the structural strength of the mill. At the sarne time the wearing sections may also be removed from the outside of the mill as in the case of the liners hereinabove described.
In order to compensate for slight variations which occur in the width of liner sections, compensating means is provided and comprises a fixed wedge means 135. The wedge means comprises sections which are wedge shaped in cross section and which are secured to the mixer end by means of welding such as indicated at 136 and 137. There are removable wedges, indicated generally at 140 and are formed of wedge parts 141, 142 and 143, the latter being a filler plate which corresponds to the end portions 53 of the liner sections. The removable wedges 140 are driven between the stationary or fixed wedges 135 and the liner, as shown in Fig. 10 so as to make a tight, firm seal through the full length of the mixer. The parts 141 and 142 are provided with openings for reception of bolts 132 used in securing the liner sections to the end wall of the mixer. The filler plate 143 is also secured between the end wall of the mixer and the end of the adjacent liner section 50a.
I claim:
l. In apparatus for mixing pavement material and the like: a body comprising upper side members; end walls to which said upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a center bottom supported by said frame, said center bottom being in the general form of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the ends of said center bottom being welded to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body, said opening being at the central region of said bottom; a gate controlling said opening, said gate being slidable beneath said bottom; power means for actuating said gate; a pair of substantially parallel shafts running longitudinally of the body and having their axes in substantially the sarne horizontal plane, said shafts being laterally spaced apart; a plurality of mixer blades secured to said shafts; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said sections having portions which extend from said horizontal plane through the axes of said shafts, arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions having lower surfaces which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center bottom, the ends of said tangential portions of opposed wearing sections being adjacent to each other; a plurality of wearing sections at the sides of said discharge opening, said sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from said exterior of said body, said sections extending from the horizontal plane through the axis of said shafts, arcuately, downwardly and rearwardly and terminating at their inner ends in tangential end portions which are shorter than thel first mentioned tangential end portions, the shorter tangentiall end` portions resting on the center bottom along the sides of said discharge opening; external means for removably securing the upper end of said wearing sections to the upper side members; external means for securing the sides of the wearing sections to each other and4 the wall members; and external means for securing the lower portions of said wearing sections to said frame.

In apparatus for mixing pavement material and the like: a body comprising upper side members; end walls to` which said` upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a center bottom supported by said frame, said center bottom being in the general form of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the ends of said center bottom being welded to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body, said opening being at the central region of said bottom; a gate controlling said opening, said gate being slidable beneath said bottom;
power means for actuating said gate; a pair of substan-v tially parallel shafts running longitudinally of the body and having their axes in substantially the same horizontal plane, said shafts being laterally spaced apart; a plurality of mixer blades secured to said shafts; a plurality of wearing sections at the ends of the mixer body, said wearing sections `being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said sections having portions which extend fro-m said horizontal plane through the axes of said shafts, arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions having lower surfaces which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body, the ends of said tangential portions of opposed wearing sections being in Contact with each other; a plurality of intermediate wearing sections at the sides of said discharge' opening and between the wearing sections adjacent the ends of said body, said sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said sections extending from the horizontal planethrough the axes of said shafts, arcuately, downwardly and'rearwardly and terminating at their inner ends in tangential end portions which are shorter than the first mentioned tangential end portions, the shorter tangential end portions resting on the center bottom along the sides of said discharge opening; external means for removably securing the upper end of said wearing sections to the upper side members; externaly means Vfor securing the sides of the wearing sections to each other and the wall members; and external means for securing the lower portions of said wearing sections to said frame.
3. In apparatus for mixing pavement material and the like: a body comprising upper side members; endi walls to which said upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a center bottom supported by said frame, said center bottom being in the general forml of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body, said opening being at the central region of said bottom; a gate controlling said opening, said gate being slidable beneath said bottom;
power means for actuating said gate; a pair of laterally spaced, substantially parallel shafts running longitudinally of the body and having their axes in substantially the same horizontalplane; a plurality of mixer blades secured to said shafts; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed andy removed from the exterior of said body, said sections havingA portions which extend from said horizontal plane through the axes of said shafts, arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body; external means for removably securing the upper end of said wearing sections to the upper side members; external means for securing the sides of the wearing sections to each other and the wall members; and external means for securing the lower portions of said wearing sections to said frame. v
4. In apparatusk for mixing pavement material andthe like: a= body comprising upper side members; end walls to which said upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a center bottom supported by said frame, said center bottom being in the general form of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body; means for removably attaching the upper ends of said wearing sections to the lower edges of said upper side members; said sections having portions which extend from the lower edges of said upper side members arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions having lower surfaces which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body; external means for securing the sides of the wearing sections to each other and the wall members; and external means for securing the lower portions of said wearing sections to said frame and holding said tangential end portions tightly against the top of said center bottom.
5. In apparatus for mixing paving material and the like: a body comprising upper side members having ontwardly extending flanges along the lower edges thereof; end walls to which upper sidemembers are secured; a center bottom in a general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end chambers and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, each of said sections having an outwardly extending attaching ange along the top and at the sides of said sections extending arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their mner ends in generally tangential end portions having iiattened lower surfaces which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body, a plurality of wearing sections at the side of said discharge opening, said sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said sections extending arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in tangential end portions which are shorter than the first mentioned tangential end portions, the shorter tangential end portions resting on the center bottom along the sides of said discharge opening; and each of said sections having an outwardly extending attaching flange along the top end at the sides thereof.
6. In apparatus for mixing pavement material and the like: a body comprising upper side members; end Walls to which said upper side members are secured; a4 supporting frame for the body; a center bottom supported by said frame, said center bottom being in the general form of a wide inverted V in cross-section, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a gate controlling said opening; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said sections having portions which extend from the lower edges of the upper side members arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body; external frame means secured marginally to the wearing sections for removably securing said wearing sections to the upper side members, to each other and to the end wall members; and external means for securing the lower portions of said wearing sections to said frame.
7. In apparatus for mixing paving material and the like: a `body comprising upper side members having outwardly extending flanges along the lower edges thereof; end walls to which said upper side members are secured; a center bottom in ,the general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, said wearing sections extending arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential portions which rest upon the upper surfaces of the center body; and means for attaching said sections to the upper side members, to each other, and to the end walls, comprising outwardly extending flanges along the top and sides of said wearing sections.
8, In apparatus for mixing paving material and the like: a body comprising upper side members having outwardly extending anges along the lower edges thereof; end walls to which said upper side members are secured; a center bottom in the general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body and each of said wearing sections having a portion supported by said center bottom; and means for attaching said sections to the upper side members, to each other, and to the end walls, comprising outwardly extending flanges along the top and sides of said wearing sections.
9. In apparatus of the class described: a body comprising upper side members; and walls to which said upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a central bottom in the general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bottom being secured to the end members and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body and including arcuately, downwardly and inwardly extending portions with inner terminal end portions which are generally tangential and which rest upon the center body, each of said wearing sections having an outwardly extending liange along the top edge and at the sides, and each of said sections having an external lug provided with a recess facing outwardly and having a bot-tom wall provided with a notch extending inwardly from the outer edge for reception of a bolt; and a tie bolt for each of said notches for connection with said frame.
10. In apparatus of the class described: a body comprising upper side members; and walls to which said upper side members are secured; a supporting frame for the body; a center bottom in the general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bot- -tom being secured to the end member and said center bottom having an opening for discharge of materials from said body; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body and including arcuately, downwardly `and inwardly extending portions with inner terminal end portions which are generally tangential and which rest upon the center body, and each of said sections having an external lug provided with a recess facing outwardly and having a bottom wall provided with a notch extending inwardly from the outer edge for reception of a bolt; and a tie bolt for each of said notches for connection with said frame.
ll. An article of manufacture, comprising: a relatively narrow removably attachable wearing section for mixing machines, said section including a generally arcuately shaped portion and a generally tangential end portion; a ange extending transversely of the wearing section on the convex side thereof on the end opposite the tangential end; flanges `on 'the side edges `of the convex side of said section; and a lug on said convex side having a recess with a bottom provided with a notch extending from the free edge thereof, said notch being adapted to receive a tie bolt with the head engaging the inner surface of the recess bottom.
12. In an article of manufacture: a relatively narrow wearing section for mixing machines, said section including an arcuate portion and a tangential end portion; and a lug on the convex side of the section having a recess with the bottom provided with a notch extending from the free edge thereof and adapted to receive a tie bolt, the head of said tie bolt being received in said recess for engagement with the bottom thereof.
13. A wearing section for mixing machines adapted to be readily removed and installed from the exterior of said machine, said section comprising: a plate generally arcuately shaped and including a generally tangential end portion; an attaching flange extending transversely of the plate from the end opposite the tangential end; and attaching flanges extending from the side edges of said plate.
14. In a removably attachable wearing section for mixing machines, comprising: a plate having an arcuately shaped portion and a generally tangential end portion; a flange extending on the convex side from the end opposite the tangential portion and from the side edges of said arcuately shaped portion; and frame means secured to said plate and having outwardly extending flange means for securing the section in a mixer.
15. An apparatus `for mixing materials and the like: a body comprising upper side members; end walls to which said side members are secured; a center bottom having its ends secured to the end members; a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body, each of said sections extending arcuately, downwardly and inwardly and terminating at their inner ends in generally tangential end portions positioned upon the center body; wedge shaped members tixedly secured to one of the end walls and having the general shape of the wearing sections; and a removable wedge means comprising sections which are positioned between the end wall having the fixed wedges and the adjacent end of the adjacent wearing sections, said removable wedge shaped sections cooperating with the fixed wedge members to provide a tight connection between said end wall and adjacent wearing sections.
16. In apparatus for mixing paving material and the like: a body comprising upper side members having outwardly extending anges along the lower edges thereof; and walls to which said upper side members are secured; a center bottom in the general cross-sectional form of a wide inverted V, the ends of said center bottom being secured to ythe end members, a plurality of wearing sections, said wearing sections being relatively narrow and adapted to be installed and removed from the exterior of said body and each of said wearing sections having a portion supported by said center bottom; and means for attaching said sections to the upper side members, 5 vto each other, and to the end walls.
