improved structural means are provided for achieving both of these objects and, accordingly, it will be understood that although the drum drainage control unit of the present invention and indicated on the drawings generally by the reference numeral 1 0 is of general utility,
a particularly useful application thereof is made in connection with a drum 11 which can be made of stainless steel or the like and which may be utilized to contain a particularly corrosive fluid such as an acid.'

The valve body 18 is further provided with an annular groove 21 located adjacent the forward end thereof andreceiving a lock ring 22 which abuts against the end of the gland nut 17 and precludes relative axial displacement of the gland nut 17 in the valve body 18.
Anintermating recess 23 and flange 24 is provided between the other end of the gland nut 17 and the valve body 18 to limit inward movement of the valve body 18 with respect to the gland nut 17.
The interior of the valve body 18 is recessed to provide a drainage passageway 26. Additionally, the valve 18 is provided with an angled downspout 27 having a drainage passageway 28 extending therethrough and intersecting the drainage passageway 26 to form a continuation thereof. j
If it is desired to increase the rate of flow of the drainage control unit, the length of the downspout 27 can be increased by inserting a length of tubing 29 into the body 18 intersects one face of the valve body 18 indicated at 30, which face 30 is particularly characterized by the provision of a valve seat portion 31 cooperating I with a valve 32 provided to control the flow of drainage fiuid from the drum 11 into the drainage passageway 26 and through the drainage passageway '28.
The valve 32 more particularly comprises a valve head 33 having a radially outwardly extending flange 34 rerectly engages the valve seat portion 31 to close the drainage passageway 26.
The valve 32 is further provided with longitudinally extending guide portions 37 which engage the walls of the drainage passageway 26 in the valve body 18 to guide the valve 32 towards and away from the valve seat portion 31.
On one face of the flange 34 is provided an embossment 38 and an opening 39a is extended through the valve 32 including the embossment 38 so as to receive in firm assembly with the valve 32 an open ended tube 39 operable as a valve stem for the valve 32 and also providing a separate vent passageway 40 toadmit ventingafluid into the drum 11 upon egress of drainage fluid outwardly thereof.
The tube 39 extends exteriorly ofthe va1ve-body-18 and is slidably received in a bushing 41 carriedby the valve body 18 and utilized to securely seal-and lock to the valve body 18 one end of an annular flexible rolling diaphragm indicated at 42.
; The other end of the diaphragm 42 is secured to the tube 39, an annular recess 43 being provided in the peripheral surface of the tube 39 and receiving an annular rib 44 provided on the corresponding-end of the diaphragm '42. The rolling diaphragm 42 forms a leak proof seal betweenthe tube ;39, and the valve body 13 without imposing frictional resistance to. the reciprocablemovements of the tube relative tothe bushing 41.
'In order topreventthe ingressof drainage fluid from the drum 11 into the ventpassagewayx40, a flapper-type check valve 46 is provided .to.-surround .the embossment 38 formed on the flange 34 of the valve 32. The-check valve 46 preferablytakes the form of asleeve madeof a flexiblematerial and includinglopposed flat wall portions 47 which are self-collapsing andoperate. in awell-known manner to permit only unidirectional flow of a fluid therethrough.
A retaine r ring 448 is shown surrounding the other. end of the valve 46 and placing same in seal tight assembly with the embossment 38.
Shouldany drainage fluid, inadvertently leak. betweenthe. opposed wall portions 47 of the check valved-6 into the recesst49 at the end of the ventpassage40, it is highly desirable that such fluid be prevented from actuallypassing through the vent passageway 40 to the areas exterior of the valve body 18. Accordingly, in accordance with the principles of the present invention, a valve 50. is provided and is placed in control of the venting passageway 40. The valve 50 more particularly comprises a valve head 51 preferably taking the form of a disk of resilient material skived as at 52 and retained on the end ;f a valve stem 53 by a support disk 54 and a fastening member 56 extending-through the support member 54 into the stem 53.
The end of the tube 39 which extends interiorly of the drum 11 when the drainage unit is assembled onthe drum 11 terminates withinthe embossment, 38 and both the embossment 38 and theend of the tube 39 -;are shaped to provide a taperedseating surface cooperable with the skivecl portion 52 of the valve head 51.
The valve stem 53 extends through the vent passageway 4t), and carries a transversely extending pinv 57 adjacent the free end thereof.
Thepin 57.has its opposite ends extending through diametrically opposed slots. 58 formed in-the walls of the tube 39 adjacent the end thereof and into firm assemblyv with a knob shaped actuating handle 59 recessed as atfit) to receive the end of thetubelw. Thus, thehandle 59 islmovably mounted on the exteriorly extending end of the tube 39but is confined on the tube 391for.;limit ed movement relative thereto within the limits prescribed by the cooperation of the slots 58 and the transverselyextending pin 57. The slots58 are preferably arranged tov accommodate a suflicient movement of the handle 59 so thatthe valve 50 can be moved toward and away from theseatprovidedby the end of :the tube 39, thereby to, open and close the ventpassageway 49.
In order to provide a continuous biasingforce normally urging both the valve 32 and the valve 50 into closed position, a coil spring 61 is bottomed in an annular groove 62 formed in the bushing 41 and has its opposite end engaging a radially outwardly extending flange 63 formed on the handle 59. If it is desired to initiate drainage'of fluid from thedrum 11, the tube -3 is movedinwardly against the biasof the spring61 by engaging the handle 59 whereupon the valve 50 will be simultaneously'liftedw In order to insure adequate flow of venting fluid, an aper- --ture-64 is provided in--the wall of the tube 339 and the handle 59 is appropriately recessed as at 66 in the area adjacent the apertures 64.
In accordance with the principles of the invention, both of the valves 32 and may be locked open or locked closed by means of a latching mechanism indicated generally at 70. The latching mechanism includes a latch arm 71 pivoted at one end to a bracket'72 integral with the valve body 18..and, suitably apertured. to'receive a pivot pin 73. The other end of the latch arm'71 engages the flange 63 on the handle 59.
As will be evident upon referring to the drawings, in the preferred embodiment shown the latch arm 71 is an elongate memberandthe longitudinal axis thereof is arranged to be generally parallel to the axis of the tube 39 so that the latch arm 71 can be pivoted around the pivot pin 73 and substantially interposed between the handle 59 I and thezvalve body-18-toretain the'handle 59 in its outermost position relativeto the valve body 18 thereby locking both the :valve 30 and the valve 50 in the closed position shown in Figure 1.
The latch-arm 71 is provided with a flange 74 and the flanges .74 and63may be provided with registering aperturesindicatedon Figure 2 at 76. The apertures 76 receive a padlock so thatthe drainage control unit-ltlmay be secured;againstunauthorized operation. It will be further understood that atamper indicating seal could also be provided through the apertures 76 so as to reveal anytampering with the drainage control unit 10 by'unauthorized personnel.
The flange 63 on -the handle '59 isnotched as at 77 (Figure 2). and thelatch arm 71 is notched as at 78', thereby forming between=the handle*59- and the latch arm 71 confronting abutment shoulders indicated at 79 (Figure-3).
Aseshownin Figure 3, the notch '78 is provided in the latchzarrn' 171 .along the longitudinal axis thereof so that the engagementofthe abutment shoulder 79-will' retain the handle 59 against the bias of the spring 61 with both the valves .30 and-50 in 'open position.
In: operation, it will be'noted that the valve body'18 is rotatable with respect to the'gland'nut .17, thereby affording adjustable positioning of the downspout 27 in any desired 'clockwiseor counterclockwise position without necessitating the .use of tools such as wrenches-or the like and without opening up any portion of the drainage controlzunit 10 tor-leakage. This structural feature is -par- 'ticularly=-advantageous=if the apparatus is utilized for drawing viscous-fluidssince the downspout 27-may be turned upwardly 180 thereby automatically developing itsaowrr drip chamber and always assuring drip free area 7 adjacent-the drum '11.

I claim as my invention: 1. -In a drum drainage control unit, a valve body providing a drain passage and having a valve seat in said passage, a main valve carried by said body and controlling said passage, a vent passage through said valve separate from said drain passage and extending outside the valve body, a check valve controlling the direction of fluid flow through said vent passage, an auxiliary valve in said vent passage in series with said check valve, and actuating means connected to said auxiliaryvalve and having an operating connection with said mainvalve for opening said auxiliary valve upon actuation of said main valve. 2. A drum drainage control unit comprising, drain passage providing means, a main valve means carried thereby for selectively controlling the drainage of fluids therethrough, said valve means having formed thereon a separate open-ended vent passage,'a self-collapsing flapper type check valve carried by said valvemeans and checking passage of fluid in one direction through said said passage, and a supplemental valve carried bysaid valve and having actuatingmeans manually accessible from exteriorly thereof for selectively controlling the flow of fluid inboth directions through said vent passage and having an operating connection with said main valve means, whereby said vent passage will be closed whenever said main valve means is closed.
3. A drainage control unit, comprising, drain passage providing means carrying a valve havingla manually accessible actuator for selectively draining fluid therethrough, a vent tube extending through said valve and said actuator and providing a separate vent passage, a. flapper type check valve on said valve andcontrolling the flow of fluid through said tube, a supplemental valve seating ag'ainst said one end of said tube and having a stem extending through said tube towards the other end, and aseparate actuating handle connected to to selectively actuate said supplemental valve.
4. In a drainage unit, a. valve body having a drain passage, a valve controlling said passage, a stem connected to saidvalve and extending exteriorly of said valve body, a. spring between said stern and. said body biasing said valve closed, a latch arm pivoted at one end'to said body and having .thefother end thereof engaging said stem to lock said valve closed, said latch arm and said stem including means providing registering apertures for receiving a tampering preventing lock, said latch arm and said stem further including cooperating abutment shoulders movable into engagement with one another to hold said valve open.
14. A drainage unit, comprising, a gland nut providing a closure opening for a drum, a valve body having a drain passage and a downspout communicating therewith rotatably received in said gland nut, retainer means between said nut and said valve body precluding withdrawal of said body from said nut, said nut and said valve body providing confronting annular circumferentially extending bearing surfaces, one of said surfaces having an annular groove formed therein, and a seal ring between said nut and said valve body confined in said groove at said bearing surfaces, said downspout being selectively angularly aligned in said gland nut to develop its own drip chamber.
15. A drainage control unit, comprising, drain passage providing means carrying a main drain valve having a manually accessible actuator for selectively draining fluid therethrough, a vent tube extending through said main drain valve and said actuator and providing a separate vent passage, a check valve on said vent tube and controlling the flow of fluid through said tube, a supplemental valve seating against said one end of said tube and having a stem extending through said tube towards the other end, single means providing both a lost motion connection between said manually accessible actuator and said main drain valve and a direct connection between said actuator and said supplemental valve for sequentially actuating first said supplemental valve and then both said main drain and supplemental valves.
16. A drainage control unit, comprising means providing a main drain passage, means providing a venting passage, a main valve controlling said main drain passage, a check valve controlling said venting passage, and a supplemental valve for said vent passage in series with said check valve, and a spring bias manually accessible valve actuator connected to said supplemental valve and having a lost motion connection with said main valve to open both said main and supplemental valves and to positively close the venting passage when the main drain passage is closed.
17. A drainage control unit, comprising inner and outer means shaped to provide concentrically aligned venting and main flow passages, said inner means forming a main valve for said main flow passage, 21 check valve for said venting passage, a supplemental valve in series with said check valve, an actuator for said 10 supplemental valve and having a lost motion connection with said inner means to concurrently lift said main valve when said supplemental valve is opened and to close said supplemental valve in said venting passage whenever said main flow passage is closed.
18. In a drainage unit, a valve body having a drain passage, a valve controlling said passage, a stem connected to said valve and extending exteriorly of said valve body, a handle extending radially outwardly on the end of said stem, :1 spring acting between said stem and said body biasing said valve closed, a latch arm pivoted at one end to said body and having the other end thereof extending longitudinally generally parallel to said stem when pivoted to a position interposed between said handle and said valve body, thereby to engage said handle to lock said valve closed, said latch arm having a flange and said handle including means together providing registering apertures for receiving a tampering preventing lock.
19. In a drainage unit as defined in claim 18, said handle being notched and said latch arm being notched along the longitudinal axis thereof to provide cooperating abutment shoulders retaining said handle against the bias of said spring with said valve open.
20. A drainage control unit as defined in claim 15, a spring acting on said actuator to normally bias said main drain valve closed, a latch arm pivoted at one end to said drain passage providing means for movement into interposed relation against said actuator, thereby engaging said actuator and holding both of said supplemental and main drain valves closed.
21. A drainage control ,unit as defined in claim 20, said actuator being notched and said latch arm being notched along the longitudinal axis thereof to provide cooperating abutment shoulders retaining the actuator against the bias of said spring to hold both said supplemental and main drain valves open.
