CHIMNEY CLEANER Filed July 2, 1954 Raul John E t/und INVENTOR.
United States Patent O CHIMNEY CLEANER Raul John Eklund, Lincoln Park, Mich.
Application July 2, 1954, Serial No. 440,9`35
2 Claims. (Cl. 15-163) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in chimney cleaners, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a wire brush embodying a novel construction and arrangement whereby the entire interior surface of a chimney may be expeditiously and thoroughly cleaned.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a cleaner of the aforementioned character wheren a single brush may be successfully used to thoroughly clean chimneys of different sizes within a given range.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a chimney cleaner of the aforementioned character which will be comparatvely simple in Construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wheren like characters of reference designate correspondng parts throughout the several views, and wheren:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section through the upper portion of a chimney, showing a cleaner embodying the present invention mounted therein;
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof;
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in section through the brush, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates a substantially U-shaped supporting bar of suitable metal which is mounted on top of a chimney, as at 6. Suspended from the bar 5 at an intermediate point is a pulley 7. A suitable chain or cable 8 is trained over the pulley 7.
Mounted on one end of the cable 8 for operation in the chimney 6 is a circulabrush 9. In the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated, the brush ice 9 includes a metallic plate 10 having formed therein a plurality of crossed, communicating radial slots 11. Radially projecting wire bristles 12 are secured on the marginal portion of the disk 10 through the medium of a ring 13, said ring being secured by rivets 14.
A rod 15 is operable in the slots 11 of the disk 10. Fixed on the lower end of the rod 15 is a spherical weight 16 of suitable metal. One end portion of the cable 8 is Secured to the upper end portion of the rod 15 by means comprising nuts and washers 17.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be l readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the brush 9 is raised in the chimney 6 through the medium of the cable S and lowered by the weight 16. It is to be noted that the weight 16 is located oti-center beneath the brush 9, thus causing said brush to gyrate as it is raised and lowered for thoroughly cleaning the entire interier circumference of the chimney. Also, the rod 15, being freely slidable in the communicating radial slots 11, permits the brush 9 to shift in a manner to bring new portions of the periphery of said brush into play.
It is believed that the many advantages of a chimney cleaner constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of Construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A chimney cleaner comprising a substantially circular brush operable in a chimney, an Operating cable for suspending the brush in the chimney, a weight, and common means radially slidably adjustably securing the cable and the weight to the brush from above and below, respectively.
2. A chimney cleaner comprising: a brush operable in the chimney and including a disk having a plurality of crossed, radial slots therein, bristles projecting from the periphery of said disk, a rod slidable in the slots, a weight on one end of said rod, and a cable having one end connected to the other end portion of the rod for suspendiug the brush in the chimney and for elevating said brush.
