JOSEPH WARNER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO ADALBERT J. WARNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLNOIS.
KEY-H OLE GUARD.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,553, dated April 10, 1883.
Application tiled August 6, 1881. (Model.)
being had to the accompanying drawings,
Vlo
where- Figure l is a view ofthe front side'of a mortse-lock bearing my improvement, meaning lby front side7 that side which faces the outside of the room when the lock is set into a room-door. Fig. 2 is a view of the same lock from the same side with the front plate removed. Fig. 3 is an edge view of said front plate. Fig. et is a rear view of said front plate. Fig. 5 is a view of the key.
The look is one which bears on the front a guard-plate capable of reciprocating motion, which is not operated when the lock is operated by inserting the key from the front, but which is moved over the key-hole when the bolt is thrown into locked 7 position with the. key inserted from the rear, and vice versa, so that a person entering his room and locking his door by the same act moves a guard-plate over the key-hole on the outside.
The letter a denotes thelock-case; b, the removable front plate thereof; c, the bolt, appurtenant to which there may be the usual appliances of tumblers, springs, &c. Ou the outside ot' the front plate, b, there is a reciprocating guard-plate d, which covers or uncovers the key-hole e, according as it is at one end or the other of its play. It may be kept to its seat by the headed rivet f, moving in the mortise g. A pin, h, practically integral with the guard-plate, plays in this same mortise and because the key is so formed that when inu serted from the rear it will Ilot in operation raise the pawl j sufficiently to disengage the slot m from the lever yi. that when inserted from the front it in operation raises pawl j so that slotm is disengaged from lever t', leaving the lever and guard-plate stationary while the bolt reciprocates. When the bolt is thrown into the locked position with the key inserted from the front, the top of lever t' sinks into slot n, and when the operation is reversed the top of lever t' again sinks into slot m.
1. The combination ot' the bolt c, the pawl j, provided with the slot m, the lever z', and the guard-plate d, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bolt c, the pawl j, provided with the slots m it, the lever fi, the
guard-plate d, and the key o, formed to dis-v engage the slots from the lever when inserted from one side only, substantially as described.
JOSEPH WARNER.
