COMBINED WADING POOL AND PLAY PEN Filed May 4, 1953 George D. Meyers INVENTOR.
BY WW Em COIVEINED WADING POOL AND PLAY PEN George D. Meyers, Stevens Point, Wis.
Application May 4, 1953, Serial No. 352,881
1 Claim. (Cl. -99) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in wading pools for small children, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a pool of this nature which may be quickly and easily converted for use as a play pen or a similar enclosure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character herein described which may be quickly and easily folded or collapsed to facilitate convenient portability or storage.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient or dependable operation and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1 and illustrating the structure in readiness for use as a play pen;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to that shown in Figure 2 but illustrating the structure in its collapsed or folded position; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the construction shown in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the combined wading pool and play pen is designated generally by the reference character and embodies in its construction a plurality of spaced, vertical standards 12 which have lower end portions 14 thereof rigidly secured to a dished bottom 16.
The standards 12 also include a plurality of sections 18 which are slidably telescoped in one another and in the base portion or section 14, it being understood that the sliding contact between these various sections is of a frictional nature so that the sections may remain, selectively, extended as shown in Figure 2, or folded or collapsed as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
The lower extremities of the sections or portions 14 are provided with suitable feet 20, and the corresponding sections 18 of the various standards 12 have secured thereto a plurality of vertically spaced, annular side members 22 which constitute the side walls of the wading pool or play pen when the structure is in its extended position as shown in Figure 2. The uppermost of the side members 22 is secured to the top of the standards by suitable screws 24, while the remainder of the side members 22 are rigidly mounted on their respective standard sections 18 by suitable washers or bushings 26.
The shallow, dished configuration of the bottom 16 affords a receptacle for water when the structure is used as a wading pool.
On the other hand, when the structure is used as a play pen, a suitable pad or mattress 28 may be removably positioned in the bottom 16 as shown in Figure 2.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is:
A wading pool and play pen comprising a plurality of standards, each including a tubular lower supporting section and a plurality of other tubular sections telescoping into each other and into the lower section to collapse the standards, a dished bottom of less depth than the height of said lower sections secured to and supported by said lower sections in elevated position, a plurality of vertically spaced annular side members on the upper ends of said other sections collapsible by telescoping of said other sections, and resilient members on the upper ends of said other sections engaging when said side members and standards are collapsed and cushioning collapse of said side members and standards and spacing said side members apart when the side members are collapsed.
