BOAT-DETACHING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,529, dated April 10, 1883.

Application filed December 27, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY SELL- ERS, of Vallejo, county of Solano, State of Galifornia, have invented an Improved Boat-Detaehing Apparatus; and 1 hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to au improvement in apparatus for detaching boats when they are to be launched from vessels, and for again reattaching them to the falls, by which they are to be raised to the davits when they return to the vessel.

It consists of -a horizontal shaft turning in boxes in the bottom of the boat and having its ends enlarged, with longitudinal slots,which extendto the center line of the shaft, so as to admit the free ends of bolts,which have their opposite ends hinged in line with the shaft. Suspending-links are hooked upon these bolts and counected'with the tackle,` and when the shaft is turned bya lever until the slots are upward the free ends of the bolts are drawn out and allow the links to slip from them, so that the boat is free to fall.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' my device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one'end of the device. Fig. 3 is a section of the same.

1 have shown my detaching apparatus f1tted to a boat, A, in the present case; but it will be manifest that it will be used in any connection where it is applicable.

B is a shaft, which extends fore and aft parallel with the keel of the boat and at any suitable height above the keel. It will be found preferable to have it as low as possible, to be out of the way, and it is fitted to turn in boxes O at each end, and D in the center for steadiness and to avoid springing. The ends of the shaft may be enlarged, as shown at E, and have short slots a cut in one side, extending to or just beyond the central line or axis of the shaft. Beyond the ends of the shaft are boxes F, which, for convenience of fastening and solidity, may be formed upon or secured to the same base with the boxes C.

Bolts G have one end pivoted in the boxes F, so that their free ends may turn in a line with the axis of the shaft and lie in the slots a. The shaft B has a lever, H, near a thwart Y at any suitable point, bywhich it can be rotated, so that when the ends of the bolts are in the slots, by turning the lever downward the slot will face downward, and the bolts cannot be withdrawn until the shaft has been again turned with the slot upward. A link, I, is made to lit over each of these bolts, their upper ends extending up through the stern-sheets and the bow-gratings respectively, so as to give plenty of space to hook on the blocks when the boat is to be taken up. These links, by passing up through the gratings, serve to steady the boat and prevent its tipping, as it might otherwise d o with the center of attachment low in the boat. Any closed link of sufcient length may be used if the boat is to be hooked on in the ordinary manner.

The operation will be as follows: 'The bolts G pass through the lower ends of the links I and enter the slots a.. The shaft B is turned so that the slots are below a horizontal `position, which prevents the bolts coming out, and the links are suspended from hooks upon the blocks of the falls or tackle in the vusual manner. When the boat has been lowered and is in` the position to be let go the lever His thrown up, and this turns the shafts so that the slots a are upward and open, so that the ends of the bolts G are drawn out and the links I slip 0E, leaving the boat free.

Each boat should be provided with two sets of links, so that when .it has been detached and one set left with the blocks the other set may be connected with the bolts and be ready to connect the boat when it is to be taken up again.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A boat-detaching apparatus consisting of the shaft B, extending lengthwise of the boat, turning in boxes O, and having the longitudinal slots a a in its ends, in combination with the bolts G, so hinged as to lie in the slots in line with the axis of the shaft and the links I,

by which connection is made with the blocks or tackle, substantially as herein described.
