JOSEPH WRIGHTSMAN, OF HARPER, KANSAS.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of -Letters Patent No. 275,450, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed January 16,1683. (No model.)
\ the advertisements and notices can be readily changed and brought into view.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved advertising device when placed in position. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device when adjusted in position for use as a writing-desk. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is another vertical sectional view taken on aline at right angles with the section shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view on the line z z, Fig. 5. Referring to the drawings, A designates a' top piece, and B designates a base-piece, which are united by nprights O, all of which comprises the frame of my improved advertising device.
D designates a rectangular rotary compartment that consists of top and bottom pieces, E F, respectively, and side pieces, G Gr. This rotary compartment D is arranged between the top and base pieces of the frame, and is centrally pivoted thereto by means of pivoted pins H I, respectively, at the top and bottom.
J designates a rotary table or base-board, that is., pivoted on the pin I, under the compartmet D, and has a hinged extension, K, that is arranged to turn up and form the front of the said compartment D. Thishinged extension K is to be locked in its position when up against the compartment D, and is provided with a slot, L, through' which letters or other matter may be passed into the compartment, which latter in this case has a central vertical partition, M, by which a letter-boxVv compartment is formed, as shown at N. When the extension K is turned down to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and rests against the base-piece B of the frame, it provides a writing table or desk, which can be also utilized as a stand for books of reference, &c. When the extension K is down, as just described, it prevents the base-board J from turning by the uprightsOooming against the sdesof the extension K; but the compartment D and other rotary portions ot' the de vice can be readily turned so as to present any one of their faces toward the table or desk.
A suitable cord or other rack,O, is arranged onthe outside surface of the side pieces, G G, which is adapted to hold business-cards, notices, dac.
Between the sides G G are journaled rollers P P, arranged one at the top and one at the bottom of the compartment D, and both provided with cranks Q, projecting outside the latter. To each ot' these rollers is secured one end of an apron, 1t, and the latter is therefore adapted to wind on either of the rollers by means of the operating-cranks. On. this apron R are to be temporarily secured notices of realestate sales, advertisements,or any other matter, and by turning the rollers these notices can be brought to view, as desired, before a glass, S, arranged in a hinged door, T, that opens downwardly, and forms the side of compartment D, on which the apron is displayed. By turning down this door T the notices can be attached to or detached from the apron.
If desired, all the sides of the rotary compartment D except the side forming a letter box can be formed to openl downwardly, and be provided with glasses through which an apron can be'inspected to view the notices thereon. In this way the separate aprons can b exclusively reserved for different classes of notices or advertisements.
Above the compartment D, and journaled on the pin H, is a rotary disk, U, having preferably a polygonal periphery, V. At each angle of the periphery is secured a vertical pin, W, between which and the periphery of the disk can be slipped the ends of a card bearing an advertisement, notice, or the like.
The operation and advantages of myinvention are obvious. The device is simple, inexpensive, and efficient, and can be very conveniently adjusted and the notices changed by the person in charge.
IOO
The top piece, A, of the frame is designed to be provided with tabletsX on any or all ot' its sides, which are adjusted to the said top by means of their pins Y at the bot-tom being received in perforations Z in the piece A. The outer surface of these tablets is to be utilized for advertising or other notices.
I claim as my invention- 1. As au improvement in advertising devices, the combination, with a rotary compartment arranged to display advertisements or notices, and provided with a compartment adapted to receive letters, ot a rotary baseboard arranged under the said rotary compartment, and provided with a hinged extension that serves as a table or desk when turned down, and forms the front of the letter-box when turned up against the rotary compartment, the hinged extension being provided with a slot, as set forth.
2. As an improvement in advertising devices, the combination et' a top and bottom piece united by uprights, a rotary compartment centrally pivoted between' the said top and bottom pieces, and having a transparent portion or glass, rollers journaled in the said rotary compartment and having` projecting operatingcranks, au apron secured to the rollers and carrying temporarily secured advertisements or notices, said apron being arranged in front of the transparent portion ot' the door, and a base-board arranged under the rotary compartment, and having a hinged extension that turns up and forms one side ot',
the compartment, and is provided with a slot, as set forth.
3. As an improvement in advertising devices, the combination of top and bottom pieces united by uprights at the corners, a rotary compartment disposed between the top and bottom pieces, and a rotary base-board arranged under the said compartment, and provided with a hinged extension that turns up and forms one side of the compartment, and that turns down between the uprights to form a table or desk, the said uprights preventing rotary movement of the base-board when the extension is down, while thc compartment can be turned to present any of its faces toward the desk, as set forth.
4:. Animprovcd advertising device comprising` a top and bottom piece united by uprights, and an intermediately-arranged rotary compartment centrally pivoted to the top and bottom pieces, a rotary base-board turning on the pivot of the said compartment, and arranged under the latter, and provided with a hinged extension that turns upand forms one side of the said. compartment, and a rotary disk having an angular periphery, at each angle of 6o which is disposed a vertical pin, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
