A'ITORNEY$ This invention relates to a label holding attachment for a typewriting machine and more especially to an improved label holding attachment adapted to be removably associated with the platen of a typewriter or the like for holding a small label in place on the platen to permit typing of information on said label.
This invention is particularly adapted for use by druggists and others wherein it is necessary or desirable to type matter on a relatively small sized label or card which is too small to be held in proper typing position by the conventional rollers of a typewriter.
It is an object of this invention to provide a removable label holder which is removably secured to one end of the platen of a typewriter and which includes spring pressed clamping means for holding the label in position on the platen to permit information to be typed on the label.
More specifically it is an object of this invention to provide a label holder of the type described including a head member having a bayonet-type slot therein adapted to slidably engage a projecting stud secured to one end of the platen, and said head member being provided with an elongated leaf spring member extending therefrom in longitudinal relation to said platen, said leaf spring memher being biased to exert pressure against the circumferential surface of the platen wherein the attachment may be secured to said one end of the platen whereby the leaf spring member will engage one edge of alabel or the like to hold the label in position around the circumference of the platen.
Some of the objects of the invention having seen stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a fragmentary isometric view of the improved label holding attachment showing the same associated with one end of the platen of a typewriter or the like:

Referring more specifically to the drawings the numeral 1t} broadly designates a platen of a conventional typewriter or similar machine which platen is preferably formed of rubber or covered with resilient material and is provided with a core 11 mounted on a shaft 12 which hired States Patent shaft 12 extends from each end of the platen. The shaft 12 is adapted to be rotatably mounted in a conventional typewriter or the like in a conventional and well known manner. Such a machine is provided with a plurality of bars carrying type 13 adapted to engage paper or the like positioned around the platen 10 for typing characters thereon.
It is well known that conventional typewriting machines and the like are provided with a plurality of rubber rollers or the like at spaced intervals about the circumference of the platen for holding the matter to be typed in touching engagement with the circumference of the platen 10, two of said rollers being shown at 14. However, small labels or cards such as indicated at L are too small to be engaged by all of the conventional rollers of a typewriter, and therefore there is provided improved means in combination with one series of conventional rollers for holding said small cards or labels L in touching engagement with the circumference of the platen 10, while typewritten matter is imprinted thereon by action of the bars carrying the type 13.
The improved card holding attachment is broadly designated at 15 and includes a head member 16 which is preferably curved along the upper surface thereof as at 17 to conform to the circumferential curvature of the platen 16). The head member 16 is provided with an L-shaped slot formed from a secantly extending slot 21 which communicates with a radially extending slot 22 leading to a substantially semi-circular opening 23 in the lower portion of the head member 21. The closed end of the secant slot 21 remote from the radial slot 22 is beveled as at 24 adjacent the outer surface of the head member 16. The opening or cut-away portion 23 is adapted to receive or fit about the shaft 12 and to rest thereon.
A clamping member in the form of an elongated leaf spring member 26 is suitably secured to the head member 16 as by a reduced neck portion 27 which fits in a groove in the upper edge of the head member 16 and is suitably secured therein as by rivets 28. The reduced portion 27 increases the flexibility of the inherently spring biased spring member 26. The leaf spring 26 is arcuate in crosssection throughout its length so as to conform substantially to the circumferential curvature of the platen 10. It is to be understood, however, that the radius of the leaf spring member 26 is preferably less than the radius of the platen 10 so as to insure that the longitudinal edges of the leaf spring member 26 will be in touching engagement with the periphery of the platen, as it is to be understood that said edges grip the labels L to hold the same against the platen. The free end of the leaf spring member 26 is preferably provided with suitable lifting means such as a projection 3i} suitably secured thereto as by welding and adapted to be engaged by an operator for lifting the leaf spring member 26 in placing or removing a label L from the platen 10.
One end of the core 11 of the platen 10 is provided with an outwardly projecting stud or bayonet-type lug 31 suitably secured thereto, and the outer free end of the stud 31 is provided with a laterally extending portion 32. The inner surface of the laterally extending portion 32 is beveled as at 33 so that in placing the attachment on a platen, the head member 16 may be positioned adjacent the end of the platen 10 so that the bayonet-type lug 31 will project through the opening or slot 21 in the head member 16 and the head member 16 may then be partially rotated about the shaft 12 to cause the beveled surface 33 on the lateral projection 32 of the lug 31 to extend over and engage the beveled surface 24 on the wall of the head member 16 adjacent the slot 21 to securely hold the head member 16 in position on the platen.
The mating beveled surfaces 24 and 33 tend to flex the portion 32 outwardly to provide a more binding grip than has heretofore been possible with a conventional bayonet-type assembly. Also, this bayonet-type of lug and slot assembly arrangement facilitates easy installation. of the attachment and removal thereof so that the typewriter may be easily used for conventional purposes. The configuration of the head member is such that the platen can be rotated substantially one-half revolution without the head member 21 interfering with the other operating parts of the typewrite to thus afford maximum flexibility in the use of the attachment in typing labels, small cards or the like.
The leaf spring member is inherently biased so as to press against the circumferential surface of the platen 1G and the leaf spring member thus serves to securely hold the label L in position, the lower end of the label L preferably being held by the conventional typewriter rollers 14 or the like. By combining a leaf spring member with the particular type of head member disclosed novel results are achieved in that the label is positively gripped and held in place and the label holding means cannot work loose or'slip but is secured tightly in position by the bayonet-type lug and slot arrangement, yet is readily removed from the platen when desired.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, a label holding attachment comprising a head member and a leaf spring member secured to said head member, said leaf spring member being arcuate in crosssection and being biasedinto engagement with the platen, said head member having an L-shaped slot therein, and a bayonet-type lug on one end of said platen adapted to penetrate said slot'for releasably securing said label holder to said platen.
2. In combination with a typewriting machine having a platen and a shaft on which said platen is mounted; a
label holding attachment comprising a head member and a leaf spring member secured to said head member, said leaf spring member being arcuate in cross-section and being biased into engagement with the platen, said head member having an arcuate cut-out adapted to rest on the shaft of said platen and also having an L-shaped slot communicating with said arcuate cut-out, and a bayonettype lug extending from one end of the platen, said lug being engageable with a portion of said head member adjacent the end of said slot remote from said cut-out to releasably connect said label holding attachment to said platen.
3. In combination with a typewriting machine having a platen; a label holding attachment comprising a head 4 member releasably connected to one end of said platen, the connection between said head member and said platen comprising a bayonet-type lug and slot assembly, a leaf spring member secured at one of its ends to said head member in substantially right-angular relation thereto and extending axially along the periphery of the platen, the free end of said leaf springmember being spaced between opposite ends of said platemandgrasping means secured to said free end of said leaf spring member.
4. In a typewriting machine having a platen and a shaft on which the platen is mounted; the combination of means for holding labels in proper typing position against the platen comprising a leaf spring member and a head member, said headmember having an arcuate cut-out in the lower surface thereof adapted to fit over and rest upon said shaft, said head member also having an angular slot therein communicating with said arcuate cut-out, a bayonet-type lug extending from one end, of said platen at a point spaced between the periphery of said platen and said shaft, and mating inclined faces on theinner surface of said lug adjacent the free end thereof and on the por- 7 tion of said, head member adjacent the'end of said slot remote from said cut-out, said mating inclined faces being engageable upon saidslot being penetrated by said lug to releasably connect said improved; label holding means to said platen, said leaf spring member comprising an elongated thin strip of material which is arcuate in crosssectional configuration so as to substantially conform to the periphery of said platen, said leaf spring member having a. reduced neck portion for connecting one end thereof to'the head member, said leaf spring member being of less length. thantheplaten and being inherently biased into engagement-with, the periphery of said platen.
5. In combination with a typewriting machine having aplaten; a label holding attachment comprising a head member having a slot therein adapted to be positioned adjacent one end of the platen, a bayonet-type lug extending from said one end of'theplaten adapted to mate with.
the slot in saidhead member, the inner surface of said lug being beveled, adjacent the free end thereof and the head member adjacent one end of the'slot thereinalso being beveled and adapted to mate with the beveled portion of saidlug upon the head member being positioned adjacent said one end of the platen, and a leaf spring member secured to saidhead, member and extending, axiallyalong the periphery f the platen in at least partial touching engagement therewith.
