FLUSH TANK BALL VALVE Filed Oct. 8, 1951 Samuel Siber IN VEN TOR.

1 Claim. (Cl. 4-66) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in ball valves for flush tanks.
An important object of the invention is to provide novel connecting means for the ball valve of a flush tank and valve rod used for opening the valve whereby the valve may be easily and quickly removed and replaced.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is etficient and dependable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, references being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the ball valve showing one type of hanger rod therefor;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified hanger construction.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a ball valve of a suitable type of live or yieldable rubber and adapted to seat on the usual outlet pipe 6 of a flush tank (not shown).
A rigid wire rod 7 is molded in the ball to extend vertically therethrough and is formed at its upper end with an eye or loop 8 and with the free end 9 of the eye spread open and positioned in contact with the surface of the ball.
By depressing the material of the ball in the region of the eye 8, the lower eye 10 of a valve rod 11 may be hooked under the open or free end 9 of eye 8 to engage the eyes for a universal movement with each other. Upon releasing pressure on ball 5 the resiliency of its material will close eye 8 to lock eye 10 therein.
The lower end of rod 7 may extend downwardly below the ball to form a guide 12 therefor, as shown in Figure 1, or where the ball is formed with a guide tongue 13, as shown in Figure 3, a relatively short rod 14 may be embedded in the ball and with a hook 15 at its lower embedded end to hold the rod therein. The upper end of rod 14 is formed with an open eye 16, as heretofore described.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a cylindrical drain pipe in a toilet flush tank, said pipe having a valve seat in the open upper end thereof, a substantially solid spherical ball valve of yieldable material disposed on said valve seat with the seat shaped to receive a portion of the ball valve, said ball valve having a depending tongue extension integral therewith extending downwardly into the drain pipe for guiding movement of the valve ball in relation to the valve seat, a wire rod embedded in said ball valve and extending upwardly from the surface of the ball in diametric opposition to the extension and terminating in a reversely bent portion forming an eye with the free end thereof in abutting engagement with the surface of the ball valve, and a valve rod having a closed eye on the lower end thereof connected to the eye on the wire rod, said surface of said ball valve adjacent the free end of the reversely bent portion of the wire rod being depressible to permit passage of the periphery of the eye on the valve rod under the free end of the reversely bent portion of the wire rod thereby forming a quick detachable universal connection between the ball valve and valve rod.
