Description

(ModeL) G. T. WOODLIEF & G. R. DUNN.
BOOT AND SHOE INDICATOR.

GEORGE T. WOODLIEF AND GEORGE B. DUNN, OF CALVERT, TEXAS.
BOOT AND SHOE INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,108, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed August 4, i882. (i\[odel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE T. WoonLIEn and GEORGE R. DUNN, both of Calvert, in the county of Robertson and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Boot and Shoe Indicator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objectof our invention is to provide an indicator for the use of retail dealers in boots and shoes, or other merchandise and wares, by which apparatus the stock can be kept with great accuracy and facility. To that end we provide an indicating-plate with slides, which is to be attached upon the boxes, shelves, drawers, or other receptacles for the goods, as an indicator for showing what goods are contained in the receptacle, as setforth more particularly hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of our stock-keeping apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detail view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, showing the plate and the grooved cross-partitions soldered thereto.
A represents the box, drawer, or other receptacle, to which the indicator is attached by pins (1 of the character shown in Fig.2. The construction of the device is as follows: B is a plate, of metal or other suitable material, attached to the box or receptacle A, and made of any suitable width and length according to requirements. The plate B has for each size a space bounded by the cross-flanges a, which are grooved and parallel. (J O are slides fitted to move in the grooved flanges a on the plate B. These slides G are about half as long as the boxAortheplateB is wide, and can be made of metal or any other suitable material, and any desired number of them may be applied to the plate B. The slides are preferably provided with knobs c, by which they can be moved from one side of the plateto the other; but these knobs may, however, be dispensed with. Between the flanges a the plate B is turned up to form end flanges, e, to prevent the slides 0 from drawing out. Thus it will be seen that as long as a given size remains unsold in the box its representative number is exposed to view; but as soon as a size has been sold out the slide 0 is shifted to the other side of the space between the flanges, and the word Out is exposed to view. 5 5
Upon the plate B, in position for being covered and uncovered by the slides, are placed numbers indicating the sizes of the boots, shoes, gaiters, slippers, or other articles which are contained in the receptacle, each number or size being placed in connection with one of the slides; or, if desired, the number may be upon the slides, or placed so that they are always visible in any position of the slides. The plate B is also marked, in connection with each slide, with the word Out, or any other words or figures that may be desired, and the numbers may also be placed in conjunction with the word. The plate is fitted at its upper part with a card, d, for receiving the name of the manufacturer, or the names, variety, quantity, or price of the goods. v
To use the apparatus thus constructed, each slide, when moved to the right, will conceal the word Outand leave the numberexposed, and when moved to the left will conceal the number and leave the word Outexposed. In case the stock ofany particular number is exhausted, the slide will be moved to the left, thus giving an indication that is readily seen.
lVe do not limit ourselves to the construction exactly as shown. The slides maybe fitted for movement vertically instead of horizontally, or they may be hinged as flaps. The plate B is to be made ornamental, and adapted for 8 convenient attachment to the box, drawer, or other receptacle, and ofsuitable size according to the place where it is to be attached.
This indicator may be used in connection with any variety otmerchandise kept in stores. 0
Ye are aware thatit is notnew to use an indicator-plate marked with rows of figures denoting the various sizes of the boots or shoes, and having plates which slide over these figures; but What we claim as new and of our invention The plate B, having parallel cross-flanges a,
dividing its face into spaces corresponding to as long as said'plate B is Wide, as shown, and the drawers for different; sizes in a boot; and for the purpose described.
