R. PLATZ.
I A MATCH. No. 275,074. Patented Apr.3, 1883.
WITNESEEE: A `INMVENTR :A-
KM QMW% *f2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL WOLF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,074, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed December 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF PLATZ, of Rottweil, Wrtemberg, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Match, of which the following specih'cation is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved match which may be lighted and will glow in windy weather, and may be used for lighting cigars and for similar purposes.
The invention consists in the combination of a flat stick with adisk of tinder and with phosphorus, the tiuder being` fastened against one side only of the stick, all as hereinafter more fully set out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved match. Fig. 2 is a front View thereof; and Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section ou line a' a, Fig. 2. All the figures are drawn on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures.
The letter a represents the stick of a match. This stick is not of the usual form, but is considerably wider than it is thick. Near the top thereof isfastened, against one of its flat sides, a disk, b, of a suitable tinder, which will glow when ignited. Owing to the dat shape ofstick a, this stick will present a proper surface to which the tinder may be applied. The upper edge of the tinder and of the stick a, or of either,is dipped into phosphorus or equivalent substance, c. When the phosphorusis lighted by friction, the flame ignites the tinder, which will glow for a period sufficient to light a cigar. As the tinder is backed by the dat stick a, it may be pressed rmly against the cigar. Moreover, by attaching the tinder to one side of the stick a only, the danger of self-ignition of the matches in the boxes will be greatly reduced.
I do not claim to have invented a tinder on amatch which surrounds the stick of the match but I do claim- The combination of a flat stick, a, with the disk b of tinder, and with the phosphorus c, the tinder being fastened against one side only of the stick a, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
RUDOLF PLATZ.
