SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,994, dated April 3, i883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD F. ToUssY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of `which the tbllowing is a specification, reference being had therein lo the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gage cocks for steam-boilers.
1t consists in a hollow plug having threads on its forward and rear ends. The front end of the plug screws into the boiler-head. The thread on the rear end receives a packing-nut. A hollow plunger works horizontally in a longitudinal circular chamber in the plug. A collar rigidly fixed on the inner side of the plug, near the center, [its closely around the plunger and divides the chamber into two compartments. The rear part contains packing and ring, which are secured by the nut aforesaid.V The forward end of the plungeris provided with a collar, which moves freely in' the front compartment. ln the plunger, near its collar, are a series of perforations. The object of my invention is to enable an engineer, by a gentle pressure of the hand, to determine the height ofwater in his boiler. ll: 'iwill be seen that by pressing on the wooden wheel the plunger is forced forward in the plug, and the perforations in said plunger thereby brought in communication with the steam, so that an opening is effected, wherebyV the steam is permitted to pass through the perforations into the plunger and out the tube aud nozzle. wheel, the plunger is forced back by the boil-l er-pressure, so that the plunger-collar will rest against the inner collarin the plug. The perforations in said plunger are thereby driven outside ofthe packing, so-that steam communication is effectually cut off. lt must be obvious that after the engineer has tried the water77 in the boiler the gage-cock closes automatica-ll y and returns to its normal position. A small collar is placed on the tube to pre vent the plunger from being pressed in bythe hand beyond thatpoint.

M M are threads, by means of which the plug A is secured to the boiler. O represents the series of perforations in the forward end of the plunger. P are threads in packing-nut D, by means of which the nut is secured to the plug. lt is a perforated 4plate formed integral on tube-neck F.
S" are the screws by means of which the block y IOC) chamber being larger than the circumference of the collar, whereby an annular space is formed for the admission of steam to the perforations in the plunger when said plunger is pressed in, the outer end ofthe plunger being provided with innerv threads, in combination with an outside threaded tube and nozzle, the tube engaging the plunger by means ot' the threads, said tube being provided with a circumferential liange or collar to prevent the nozzle from being driven against the outer face of the` packing-nut, substantially as described, and for the purposes specied.

The combination of the hollowplungcr E, having perforations O and collar G, the chamber-plug A, ring G, and nut D, the collar G 25 moving freely in the chamber and admitting steam around its sides to the openings O when said collar is moved forward in the chamber, substantially as set forth and specified.
