SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent lfl'o. 274,993, dated April 3, 1883.

In the drawings,Fignres l and 4 are isometric views of type, some of which are construct-- ed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a specimen of matter printed with my improved type. Fig. 3 isa specimen of different letters, separated from each other, as printed by my type.

My invention consists in forming the cross a of the letter t? in such a manner thatit will extend over one or more ofthe letters or blanks which follow it, so as to give to the printing the appearance of being an engraving, or of having been Written by hand. This I' do by providing the face of the type or types which are likely to follow the letter t with a portion of the cross, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Ifthe word to be printed ends with the letter t, I provide a type with a portion or extension of the cross only, as shown in Fig. 4. Thus in the word that it will be seen that this type Fig. l of the drawings;) or theletters r and i and the extension of the cross-line of the letter t above them may be cast upon separate or fractional types.
WVhat I claim is 1. Atypeconstructed to follow the letter t,
and provided with a portion or extension of the cross line of said letter t, whereby. said cross-line can be extended as desired,substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a. type or number of types of letters which are likely to follow the letter t in the formation ofa word, said type or types being provided with a portion or extension of the cross of the t,substantially as shown and described.
