JOHN Mow 'r REID, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
METALLIC FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,820, dated March 27, 1883.
. Application filed. November 9, 1882. (No model.)
-I'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MOWA'I REID, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Metallic Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to metallic fences; and it consists in the combination, with the metallic posts and the strands of fence-wire supported by the same, of a continuous key 'for looking all the wires to the posts, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aside elevation of part of a fence having my improved key. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on a plane between two strands of wires. Fig. 3 vis a plan of the fencepost blank. Fig. I is a sideview of the same after it has been bent into shape to form the post; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the post through the apex of thesame, showing the continuous key in side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the fence-posts, which are disposed alternately on opposite sides of the fencewires 0. These posts are made of sheet metal bent longitudinally at an angle of between eighty and ninety degrees, (more or less,) and having slots B through the apex of the angle, adapted to receive the wires. To the lower ends of the posts are fastened metal plates E,
] plain or corrugated, and of suitable shape for anchoring them firmly in the ground, and near the top are notches or side recessesfli}, adapted to receive a board-rail, F, which is locked to t the posts by wire staples H, inserted through holes in the posts and in the rail. The fencewires 0 are locked in their slots B by a continuous key or fastener, D, consisting of a thin metallic rod or stout wire, which is doubled round each strand of wire in its appropriate slot, B, so as to form loops or eyes D around the same, as clearly shown in the drawings. By this construction-i. 6., making the key D D in one continuous piece-it is impossible to dislodge'the wires by pulling out the keys, as
where these are made separately for each strand of wire, by cattle bearing heavily against the wires between the posts, as in a stampede, or when trying to break the fence.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the metallic angleposts A, slotted at B, and fence-wires O, of the continuous keyrod D, doubled around the wires to form loops or eyes D, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of witnesses.
JOHN MOWAT REID.
