(Cl. 285-38) The present invention relates to closure construction generally, and particularly to closures useable on any type of non-rigid container wall and to contain any specied fluid.
In the art of closure fabrication and insertion, it is oftentimes difiicult to provide a closure of universal use. Sealing integrity is a particularly difficult problem for one must consider; (n) the relative position of the threads and the sealing means, (b) the stress and strain on material of the container wall and the closure elements dur ing closure insertion and use, (c) the necessity for continued maintenance of sealing integrity required during shipment of the container and its closure.
I have provided a practical solution to the problem of sealing integrity for closures for non-rigid container walls.
h/Iy invention comprises an annular closure tting and container wall combination; the iitting includes a first collar having a liange projecting inwardly from its lower edge; an outer collar complementary to the rst collar has a fiange projecting outwardly from the lower edge of the outer collar. The flanges ot` the collars rest on the container wall. An annular rigid member is affixed to the container wall beneath the plane thereof for supporting each of said collars and anges. The inner edge of the annular rigid member overlies the inwardly projecting flange, and the upper free edge of the first collar overlies' the upper free edge of the outer collar. Sealing portions are provided on the container wall in the area of joinder of the collars and anges.
The figure is a perspective view of the closure with parts broken away and in section.
Referring to the gure a preferred modification of the closure is shown. A fitting is provided at 1t), generally, and comprises an annular inner and outer collar 11 and 12 having threads rolled therein and respective inwardly and outwardly directed flanges 13 and 14 at the lower extremities thereof. The inner collar 11 is preferably provided with a curled annulus 15 impeding the upper free end of collar 12 and adapted to receive a cylindrical wall 16 of a capseal generally shown at 17.
Container wall 39 is compressed in sealing relation between the underfaces of flanges 13 and 14, and the upper face of a periorate disc-like supporting member 40 which evenly engages the container wall adjacent its opening. The inner extremity of supporting member 40 is curled over the lip of liange 13 and wall 39 as at 41 to compress the container wall. To insure against rotation of the itting 1i) relative to the container wall, the outer edge of flange 14 is cupped polygonally downward as at 21a, and the outer edge of supporting member 4i) is trimmed polygonally and complementary to portion 21a of flange 14. The container wall is assured of a more permanent sealing relation of parts by reason of the rigid supporting member di) being non-rotatable with respect to fitting 10. The container wall 3@ is further stationed relative to iitting 16 by means of a ring 44 integral within wall 39, the ring being located coaxially in the mouth of the fitting at the point of joinder of the flanges 11 and 12.
A plug 24 with a threaded wall 25 and llat bottom 26 is adapted to be screwed into the fitting 10 by wrench-engaging lugs 27 provided around wall 25 on bottom 26. The under face of plug 24 is adapted to seat'gasket Y26a between t'he recess provided between an over-hanging portion of wall 25 generally shown at 27 and the periphery of bottom 26. The plug 24, when threaded into place, axially depresses gasket 26a onto portionsvof the lip of llange 13 and the curled free end 41 of supporting member '40, thereby sealing the joint therebetween.
Capseal 17 is seated on the top of plug 24'throug'h -a gasket 28 resting upon the top -29 of wall 25 and the lower part of annulus l'and is compressed thereagainst by the tucking of capseal wall 16 within annulus'15.
The annulus^15 is interrupted, as disclosed in Vmy copending application for a capseal 'S."N. 171,697, at atleast one point in its circumference to deline a gap,through the sides 30 of which pass one tearing ear 31 extending from the plane of the periphery of capseal bottom portion 32 which in turn bears upon gasket 28. Wall 16 of capseal 17 is correspondingly interrupted about its circumference such that a tearing strip generally shown as 33 may be defined across bottom portion 32 by scored lines of weakness 34 induced therein and terminating at the lateral sides of ear 31 and the foot wall 16.
Clear height of a closure from the wall 10 is not sacriiced in the tting since the threads are placed at the lowermost part of collar 11. This is most etectively accomplished by thread rolling techniques old in the art, it being impractical to attempt to cut threads internally at the close space between flange 13 and collar 11. Thread rolling dually affords tor the provision of annulus 15 which has two functions, i. e., (a) the co-operation with polygonally shaped ange 14 to prevent rotation and upward displacement of collar 11 with respect to collar 12, and (b) to provide a seat for capseal wall 16.
Although collar 12 is also shown as of rolled fabrication, it may be economically threaded by cutting techniques also old in the art of internal threading.
In assembly collars 11 and 12 may be rolled together from a cylindrical wall or they may be screwed together 13 and 14 `andthe collars at the point of insertion of the fitting.
By adopting thread rolling techniques, it is possible to simultaneously roll annulus 15 into the collar 11. This serves two purposes, viz., the provision of a seat for the wall 16 of capseal 17 and the providing of means to obstruct the collar 12 from upward axial displacement, whether that latter collar be threaded or not.
By making the collars 11 and 12 separately it was possible to fabricate the fitting 10 at the point where the ftting is to be inserted on the container wall.
Providing flange 13 at the foot of collar 11 enables the placing of a gasket 26a between the containers contents and the plug 24 enabling the use of a noncorrosion resistant plug 24 and threaded wall 25.
I claim:
l. An annular closure fitting and container wall in combination, said itting including a iirst collar having a flange projecting inwardly from its lower edge, an outer collar complementary to said rst collar and havingH a ange projecting outwardly from the lower edge of said outer collar, the flanges of said collars resting on said container wall, an annular rigid member aiixed to said container wall beneath the plane thereof for supporting each of said collars and anges, the inner edge of said annular rigid member overlying said inwardly projecting tiange, the upper free edge of said first collar overlying the upper free edge of said outer collar, and sealing portions on said container wall provided in the area of joinder of said collars and anges.

A closuret'ting' and container wall` in combinationl according to claim 1, in which said first collar has threads provided therein commencing substantially in the plane of said inwardly projecting flange and progressing axially upward, said threads being characterized in section as a zig-zag progression along said first collar.
3. An annular closure tting and container wall in combination, said fitting including a first collar having a ange projecting inwardly from its lower edge, an outer collar complementary to said tirst collar and having a iiange projecting outwardly from the lower edge of said outer collar, said container wall being composed of a rubberlike material, the ilanges of said collars resting on said container wall, an annular rigid member abutting an opposite side of said container wall from tnat side on which said angcs rest, the upper free edge of said first collar overlying the upper free edge of said outer collar, the inner edge of said annular rigid member overlying said inwardly projecting ange in the form of an annular curl with an annular free edge of said container wall lying therebetween.

5. A closure fitting and container wall in combination according to claim 3, in which a ring is imbedded in the container wall and occupiesv the area of joinder between said collars and said tlanges.
