UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. THOMPSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DRESS- PILLOW.
srncrrrcarron forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,673, dated March 27, 1883.
- Application filed October 13, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have, invented a new and useful Improvement in Dress-Pillows; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in dress-pillows or sham pillows, such as are placed upon the bed in the day-time to present a more ornamental appearance than that presented by the ordinary pillows, and which are removed when the bed is to be used. My said invention more particularly relates to the consham holder composed of a frame of sheet metal or wire-gauze, rounded at its sides and corners and covered with ticking or canvas, upon which is' laid a packing of cotton-batting or similar material, and the whole covered with a suitable fabric to represent a pillow and to receive the sham or ornamental cover-let, all as hereinafter particularly set forth and described; and it further consists in theimproved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel represents a plan view of my improved shamholder complete and ready to receive the sham or ornamentalcoverlet; Fig. 2, a plan view with parts removed to show the construction of the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the several figures.
it represents a frame of tin orwire-gauze or similar light material, which will not readily dent, but which, (in being pressed, will resume its original form when the pressure is removed. This framea is rounded at its sides and corners, as shown, so that in form it resembles a pillow. Over the open space I) of this I frame is stretched and secured a covering, 0, of ticking or canvas, and upon that is laid a packing of cotton-batting, d, or similar material,to afford a soft and yielding surface, the whole being inclosed within an outer covering, m, of cotton or linen cloth, or other suitable textile fabric, to resemble a pillow in appearance. This latter is stretched over the under edges of the frame Ct, and maybe secured in any suitable manner; but the preferred mode is to clamp it by means of a rectangular wooden frame, 19, which fits closely inside of the frame a. This frame 11 also serves to keep the frame 0b in proper form.
' The special advantages secured by my improvement are, first. that the frame a, when made of the material and in the form described, can be made to exactly resemble the contour of a pillow, and will retain its proper form for an indefinite period; secondly, the structure is very light, and a number of the holders can be packed into a very small compass when not in use; and, thirdly, the sham holder constructed as described is comparatively inexpensive. I
I am aware of the sham pillow described in Letters Patent No. 172,859, consisting of a shell composed of a wooden frame and a series of wires covered with a textile fabric; but that I do not claim, but hereby disclaim that construction.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A dress-pillow or sham holder com posed of a frame, a, of sheet metal or wire-gauze, rounded at its sides and corners, as shown and described, and provided with a covering, 0, of ticking or canvas, a packing, d, of cottonbatting or similar material, and an outer covering, m, of suitable textile fabric to resemble a pillow, the whole being constructed and arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE W. THOMPSON.
