UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MOULD, OF SAUGERTIES, NEW YORK.
TOM BSTONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,638, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed December 4, 1882. (No model.)
' T 0 all whom it may cones-rm Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MOULD, of Sangerties, in the county of Ulster'and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tombstone, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improvedtomhstone in which the several parts forming the same can be united easily and rapidly in such a manner that the entire tombstone will be very rigid; and to this end it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter full; described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved tombstone. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the top of the same, showing it inverted. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation-of the base. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base. 7
The base is formed of a bottom section, A, and an upper section, B, on which the top stone, 0, rests. The upper base-section, B, is
pprovided with a mortise, D, in its top, into which mortise a-tenon, E, fits, formed in the lower end of the top stone, 0. Two or more holes are bored or otherwise produced in the lower end of the top stone, G, and into the said holes dowel-pins F, havingenlarged or widened ends, are passed, and then the space between the pins and the sides of the holes is filled with molten sulphur a. Holes G for receiving the pins F are formed in the top of the upper base-section, B. Holes H extend through the upper base-section, B, into the top of the bot tom base-section, A. Pins J, with enlarged ends, are passed into the holes H,.and then. the top stone, 0, is placed in the upper base-sec tion, B, the tenon E passing into the mortise D and the pins F passing into the holes Gr.
Molten sulphur is then poured into the mor- 4 tise through an aperture, K, in the back of the tombstone, from which aperture small channels cl extend to the holes H. The molten sulphur fills the remaining space in the holes H,
and space 6, the mortise D, and incloses and 5 surrounds the pins 13 and J, which are thus protected from oxidation and are held firmly in the stone. The top stone, 0, cannot be upset or lifted from the upper base-section, B, Y which in turn cannot be lifted from the bot- 5 tom base-section, A. The pins J must have larger heads at the upper ends to' prevent them from being drawn through the holes H in case an attempt is made to lift or raise the upper base-section, B. Molten lead can be used 6 in place of molten sulphur.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tombstone, the combination, with the 6 bottom base-section, A, and the top stone, 0, of the upper base-section, B, provided with the mortise D e, the holes G H, the aperture K, and the channels 0?, leading to the holes H, substantially as herein shown and described. 7
