Claims. (Cl. 206-4533) This invention relates to merchandizing packages for stockings or -the like.

The chief aim of my invention is to provide a compact fiat package with a transparent outer envelope in which one or more pairs of stockings are neatly and snugly held in flat folded condition, with the top or welt ends for example, as well as portions of the leg fabric, visible through the transparent envelope for convenience of inspection by prospective purchasers Without necessity for removing the stockings.

Other objects and attendant advantages will appear from the following detailed description of the attached drawings, wherein:

Fig. l is a perspective view of a package, constructed in accordance with my invention, for a single pair of stockings.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the package taken as indicated by the angled arrows IIII in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 shows one of the components of the package, the same being in the form of a foldable foundation strip for supporting the stockings within an envelope.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing how the foundation component of Fig. 3 is folded in preparation for application of the stockings.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another component or supporting element of the package about which the stockings are wrapped before being assembled with the foundation component.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of an alternative form of package, constructed in accordance with my invention, for two pairs of stockings with the tops and portions of the legs visible through the outside envelope.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken as indicated by the angled arrows VIIV 'II in Fig. 6; and

'Figs. 8 and 9 are views, corresponding to Figs. 3 and 4, of the foundation component of the alternative embodiment of my invention.

With more specific references, first more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the package for a single pair of stockings there illustrated is comprehensively designated 1. The foundation component for this package is designated 2, and is shown in Fig. 3, is initially in the form of a flat elongate oblong strip which, in practice, is cut from suitably stiff cardboard or the like, and which in this instance has transverse score lines 33 and 4-4 subdividing it into three

5, 6 and 7 which are substantially of the same length and of equal area. As shown, the end section 5 of the component 2 is provided with a substantially semicircular opening 8 which extends from the score line 33. In preparation for application of a pair of stockings such as indicated at S in Figs. 1 and 2, the foundation component 2 is made ready as shown in Fig. 4, by folding the section 6 downwardly over the section 7 about the crease line 44 and the section 5 upwardly over the section 6 about the crease line 33. Before assembling, the stockings are wrapped about a rectangular insert element 10, separately illustrated in Fig. 5, which element, like the foundation com- Patented May 15, 1956 ponent 2, may be of cardboard, and which corresponds substantially in size to that of the

5 and 6 of said component. The insert element 10, with the stockings wrapped thereabout, is placed into the fold between the

5 and 6 of the .component 2 in Fig. 4, and the ornamented welt tops T of the stockings (which have been left free) are passed down through the opening 3 as shown in Fig. 1. Finally, an envelope 11 of transparent material such as cellophane is formed closely about the assemblage, and lapped edge margins thereof at 12 and 13 are sealed by fusion to render the package dust and moisture tight. As a result of this construction and procedure, the welt top of one of the stockings S as well as a portion of the leg are clearly visible through the transparent envelope as will be readily understood from Fig. l. 3

In the embodiment of Figs. 69,'the foundation component 2a is subdivided by three transverse scorings 3a 3a, 411-411 and 15-15 into four

5 and 6 of the first described embodiment, but the section 7:: being substantially twice the length of the smaller sections. As shown, the end section 16 is provided with semicircular open ing 17 like the opening 8a in the end section 5a. In this instance, the component 2a is prepared by folding the section 6a downwardly over the section 7a about the score line 4a4a, the section 5a upwardly over the section 6a about the score 3a-3a, and the section 16 upwardly over the section 7a about the score line 15-1-5, all as shown in Fig. 9. Moreover, in this instance, separate pairs of stockings S and S are wrapped about in dividual supporting elements 10a similar to the insert element 10 of the first embodiment, and said elements, with the enwrapped stockings, placed respectively into the folds between the

5a and 16 of the component 2a, and their welt top portions, respectively passed down through the openings of 8a and 17.

As in the first embodiment, the assemblage is snugly encased in an envelope 11a of transparent sheet material with the joints 12a and 13a sealed by fusion or by means of a suitable adhesive. The two pairs of stockings so wrapped may be of the same color with differently ornamented welt portions, or they may be of different colors and have identically ornamented welt tops.

In both embodiments, the foundation component is so proportioned in practice that the completed package will tit into boxes of the size ordinarily used in the marketing of hosiery.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

I. A merchandizing package for articles such as stockings, comprising a foundation component in the form of an oblong strip of cardboard or the like subdivided by transverse fold lines into at least three sections, one of the end section's having an opening therein extending beyond the crease line by which it is defined, the mid section being folded over the other end section, and the apertured section being turned inwardly over said adjacent section; a square insert of cardboard or the like, having a pair of stockings wrapped thereabout, placed into the fold behind the apertured end section of the foundation component, with the top portions of the stockings turned downwardly and outwardly over said mid section and passed through the opening in said apertured section; and an envelope of transparent sheet material encasing the foundation component with the stockings assembled as aforesaid.

2. A package for stockings according to claim 1, wherein the opening in the apertured section of the foundation component is substantially semicircular in configuration.

3. A merchandizing package for articles such as stockings, comprising a foundation component in the form of an elongate oblong strip of cardboard or the like subdivided by three transverse fold lines into four sections, the opposite end sections being equal in length, the section adjacent one of the end sections being likewise of the same length, and the section adjacent the other end being of a length equal to at least twice that of the end sections, each end section having an opening extending beyond the fold line by which it is defined, the small blank section being folded downwardly upon the larger section, the corresponding apertured end section being folded upwardly upon said small blank section, and the other apertured end section being folded upwardly over said larger section; square inserts likewise of cardboard or the like, each having a pair of stockings wrapped thereabout, respectively engaged into the folds behind the apertured end sections of the foundation strip with the top portions of the stocking pairs respectively passed through the openings in said end sections; and an envelope of transparent sheet material encasing the foundation component with the stockings assembled as aforesaid.

4. A package for stockings according to claim 3, where in the apertures in the end sections of the foundation component are substantially semicircular in configuration.

5. A merchandizing package for articles such as stockings, comprising a foundation component in the form of an elongated strip of cardboard or the like subdivided by transverse fold lines into' three sections, one of the end sections having an opening therein of a width substantially equal to that of the stocking top, said end section being folded upon the medial section and the two folded upon the other end section; a smaller rectangular insert of cardboard, equal in area substantially to that of the apertured end section of the foundation component,

about which a stocking is wrapped, the end portions of said insert beyond the stocking being engaged between the apertured end section and the medial section of the foundation component; and an envelope of transparent sheet material encasing the foundation component with the stocking assembled as aforesaid.
