Claims priority, application France -.anuary-9, 1951 Claims. (Cl. 126-190) This invention relates to gas-tightening devices for oven doors.
The object of the present invention is to provide a sealing means around an oven aperture which is combination with a sliding door for said aperture will hermetically seal said closure when said door is closed for preventing loss of heat or gases from said oven.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a slidable door for opening and closing over apertures including owable sealing means around said aperture and alongside said door which means is retained in its sealing position regardless of the position of said door.
A sealing device according to the invention comprises, in combination, about the aperture to be closed, a permanent and uninterrupted chainv of tightening material which may be housed in channels of any suitable shape provided about said aperture; on the door of said aperture, on the one hand, closing elements extending below said door with respect to the direction in which it opens and closing hermetically the portions of the aforesaid chain or" tightening material that are parallel to that direction (whether the door is open or closed), and, on the other hand, closing elements which close the other 2 mum opening height of the door and a suicient safety height (such as a few cm.).
Packing boxes may be provided in the path of the vertical gas-tightening elements, on the travel of their prolongations.
As a tightening material, the following may be used (l) if a comparative tightness is desired in the vertical portions of the fixed channels, a suitable movable, pulverulent or granular material, such as sand, plaster, kieselguhr or the like, or a mixture of these; and, in the horizontal portions of said ixed channels, a similar material or a pasty material, heat resistant, such as a plastic lubriicating material, grease or the like, or a liquid substance, such as a high combustion point oil.
(2) if aperfect tightness is desired in the vertical portions of the lixed channels, a pasty material; and, in
the horizontal portions of said channels, a pasty or liquid substance.
Actually, the provision in said channels of a granular or pulverulent material `produces a substantial loss'inl the leakage of the gas, whereby a comparative tightness is in dash-and-dotted lines. Fig. 4 isV a semi-elevational view of an oven'aperture, -I provided with a door opening unwardly and slightly open..
portions of said chain, which are horizontal in the present case, when the door is closed only. The sections of the xed channels provided about the aperture of the oven may be U- or V-shaped or otherwise. And the horizontal portions of said channels can normally be completely open when the door is open. While the vertical portions of said channels can be normally partly closed by xed flexible or rigid plates, and in such a case, the corresponding movable members, integral with the door, may be sliding plates, in close frictional relation with said iixed plates, closing hermetically the free space formed between their edges and constantly preventing the tightening material from falling out of said channels, whether the door is closed or open.
As regards the vertical portions of the gas-tightening chain channels, their closing is then permanently ensured by sliding plates, moving with the door, before the front openings of these portions ofsaid channels.
As regards the horizontal portions of the gas-tightening chain channels, their closing can be ensured by making the movable closing parts, integral with the door, penetrate inside the gas-tightening material filling said channels, but only when the door is shut as when the door is open, said horizontal channels keep open.
lt should be pointed out that the Vertical portions of the xed channels of the gas-tightening chain must have a bottom adapted to retain the tightening material they contain.
it should also be pointed out that the prolongations of the vertical movable closing parts, integral with the door of the oven, in order to always ensure a satisfactory tightness on the sides of the aperture of the oven, will preferably have a length equal to the sum of the height of the corresponding vertical channels, the maxiobtained, while a pasty substance in a channel prevents'any` gas frornpassing through, Ythe result thereof being an absolute tightness. I
ln the attached drawings, various embodiments of the invention have been illustrated by Yway of example, which are in no way limitative.

Patented May 15, 195s` provided sliding plate (Figs 2, 3 to 8 v '1 and lll) integral with the door 6 in its sliding motion which forms the movable' part of the vertical tighten- Said channel l has a bottom 7 making t v it possible to fill it with a movable material (not shown.` u When the movable plate 5' moves,"w: it slides along the fixed flexible plates 3, whereby a tight l 3; lower'. prolongation of vthe sliding plate' 5 extending below the door 6, Yas shown specially on Figs. 4, 7 and ,10, which, as the door is being raised, keeps pressing against Vthe fixed plates 3 ensuringthe gas-tightness of the closure ofv the Vchannel 1. There ,is a certain play between said slot 8 and the plate S; therefore a packing box 9 is provided atV the lower part of the slot 8 (Fig. 8) the purpose of which is to allow thepassage of theplate but to avoid that of the movable material iilling ,the channel 1 which might, were'not sucha packing box provided, ilow into the interstice. Said packing box may comprise arubber plate 10 throughY which the plate 5 can passrwith a very small play which does not allow the movablematerial to ow through; said rubber plate 10 is laterally movable in its housing 11;V owing to said packing 9 th'e slidable plate 5' is slidablein accordance with the displacements of the door, constantly ensuring permanent longitudinal closure of the vertical channel 1, which can thus permanently contain a movable material cooperating in the permanent gas-tightness along thev slateral`vertical parts of the door.
In the same way as the vertical channels 1 of the fixed device ensuring the'gas-tight'ness can be filled up with a movable material, the aperture of the oven can be provided at top and bottom, with upperjand lower horizontal channels 12 and I3 (Figs. 4, .6, 7 and 9) with joining channels 14 connecting the upper yhorizontal channel 12 to the upper part ofzthe'vertical channelsv 1 ensuring gas-tightness. Owing to the fact thatV these various channels, which'are also illed with a movable material are permanently connectedV at their extremities, a permanent, endless chain of movable material isv thus formed about the aperture of the oven.
The movable gas-tightening device integral with the door 6 also comprises at its upper part a plate 15 adapted tov penetrate into the upper horizontalv channels 12 and the connecting one 14, and` at its lower part, a plate 16 adapted to penetrate into the lower horizontal-.channel 13' defined by walls 17 extending across in front of the oven between the walls 2. When the door 6 slides down to its closing position, the upper penetrating plate Vrpenetrates into the upper horizontal channel 12 and the connecting channels 14 and alsov intoV the high parts of theV vertical lateral channels `1 and1 ensures tightness by penetrating into'the movable: material contained in said channels; inv the same way, at the lower' partA of the door 6, ythe 'lower penetrating plate 16. penetrates into the movable material that is in the vlower horizontal channel 13; thus the desired gas-tightness is automatical- 1y obtained as soon as the iixed and the movable parts of the gas-,tightening device are connected.
Y The above arrangements are given by Vway of examy Y ple only: the shapes, sizes, details of structure and usesr can vbe changed without departing from' the characteristics of lthe invention. Y
The movable material used maybe Vsand, plaster,
In some cases, the horizontal channels can be ll'ed With liquids, such as high combustion point oils, while the vertical channels are filled withmaterials insoluble in the 'liquids used; or screens, whether plastic or not, can also beplaced in the connecting channels in order ,toi separate these materials of dilerent kinds. By so doing, a permanent endless chain is obtained about the aperture of the oven, said chain being formed of a pasty material in the vertical channels and of a pasty or liquid material in the horizontalv channels, whereby a hermetical'instantaneous closing of the door of the oven 'is provided. In someY embodiments of they gas-tightening device, the vertical channels can be partly or completely suppressed and be replaced by a form the extremity ofwhich, exible or not, ensures a longitudinal contact withthe sliding plate in a groove full with grease. The above processes and devices can be applied to any aperture that must be tightly closed.
