Description

May 15, 1956 s. MORA 2,745,126
COMBINED WASHER AND sQuEEGEE Filed June 24, 195s IN V EN TOR.
STEVE MORA Arranca/Ey,
United States Patent O COMBINED WASHER AND SQUEEGEE Steve Mora, Detroit, Mich., assigner to Inter-City Manufacturing Company, Detroit, Mich., a copartnership Application June 24, 1953, Serial No. 363,762
5 Claims. (Cl. 15-121) This invention relates to window cleaning devices, and has particular reference to a device for cleaning the windows of a house or automobile or the like.
An object of the invention is to generally improve devices of the character indicated, and to provide a window cleaner which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated, which is easy to assemble and disassemble.
Another object of the invention is the provision of av combination washer and squeegee, with novel means for supporting the rubber elements thereof, whereby it is easy to replace the sponge rubber or the rubber wiper blade should either of them become worn or otherwise damaged.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated, in which the rubber squeegee blade is reinforced with a rigid backing member throughout a greater portion of its length and width.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated, which is provided with novel means for locking the several elements together.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawing forming part of the Within disclosure, in which drawing:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of a device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device illustrated in Referring now more particularly to the drawing, it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed,
the reference character 7 generally indicates the head, the reference character 8 indicates the shank, and the reference character 9 indicates the wooden handle, which is provided with a metal ferrule 10 as in conventional practice.
The head 7 consists of a pair of rockingly mounted metal plates 11 and 12, which are bent and rebent, as shown in Fig. l, and serve as carriers and supports for the sponge rubber Washing element 13 and the rubber squeegee blade 14. The longitudinal edges 15 and 16 of the members 11 and 12 are inturned, so that when the device is assembled, the edges 15 and 16 bite into the sponge rubber 13 with a tight gripping action. The plates 11 and 12 are lanced, as at 17, to provide barbs 1S, which also bite into the sponge rubber 13 and serve to further lock the sponge rubber 13 against displacement. The plate 11 is provided with a curved portion 19 which is adapted to receive a correspondingly curved portion formed on the squeegee blade 14, whereby to prevent the blade 14 from being displaced while the device is in use. The plate 12 has a at area 20 which is adapted to engage a correspondingly at face 21 of the squeegee blade 14.
It will be noted that the edge 22 of the plate 11 eX- tends a substantial distance beyond the corresponding edge of the plate 12 and'well beyond the longitudinal axis of the blade 14, whereby the squeegee blade 14 is given a rigid backing and reinforcement when it is held against the window. The arrangement and formation of the portions 19 and 20 are such that the blade 14 may not be removed therefrom except in an endwise direction. This enables the user to slip the squeegee blade 14 from the device endwise and replace it with another.
The head 7 is supported by the shank 8 as hereinafter described:
Each of the plates 11 and 12 is provided with a substantially centrally positioned rectangular opening 23 (Figs. 2 and 3) which openings' are adapted to receive the shank 8, which is preferably formed of a single length of wire bent, as at 24 (Fig. 3), intermediate its ends and rebent, as at 2S, to form oppositely directed feet 26, which are preferably spot welded to the upper face of the plate 11, as at 27. The plates 11 and 12 are secured to one another by means of spring clips 28. The ends of the plates 11 and 12 are notched, as at 29, to receive the spring clips 28, and the plates 11 and 12 are also provided with openings 30 to receive the curved portion 31 of the spring clips 28. The spring clips may readily be removed so that the plates 11 and 12 may be separated for the insertion of a new sponge rubber member 13, and also for the insertion of a new squeegee blade 14 although, as previously described, the blade 14 may be removed endwise from the plates if it is desired to replace the blade 14 without replacing the sponge rubber' element 13.
It will be seen from the foregoing that l have provided a novel construction in which the two plate like elements 11 and 12 are held in a resilient manner because of the natural resiliency of the rubber elements 13 and 14, and because of the arrangement of the spring clips 28.
It is believed that Vthe functioning of the device is obvious from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described in combination, a handle, a wire shank supported by said handle, and a head supported by said shank, said head comprising a pair of rectangular members arranged face to face, each of which is provided with a central opening for receiving said shank, said shank terminating in oppositely directed feet portions, each of which is secured to the far side of the rectangular member remote from said handle, the other rectangular member being loosely mounted on said shank, said rectangular members having their correspending longitudinal edges inturned at least along one side, a resilient element retained by said inturned edges, and means to retain said rectangular members against displacement.
2. The structure of claim l, in which said remote rectangular member is concavelyv bent along its approximate longitudinal median line to form a channel for receiving the feet portions of said shank.
3. The structure of claim l. in which said rectangular members are provided, near their edges, along the longitudinal median line, with cut-out portions for receiving spring clips, and spring clips received in said eut-out portions, whereby the ends of said members are held in clamped relation. y
4. In a device of the character described in combination, a handle, a wire shank mounted to said handle, said shank terminating in a pair of oppositely directed legs, a pair of rectangular members arranged face to face, each having a central opening for receiving said shank, the rectangular member remote from said handle being secured to said legs, the other said rectangular member being loosely mounted on said shank by means of the Ptented May 15, e`
