S. KALFS.
COMBINED OLER AND F11-TER- No. 274,339. Patelted Mar.20,1883'.

Attorney PATENT i STHERN KALFUS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED COOLER AND FILTER.
SECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,339, dated March 20, 1888. Application led August 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SUTHERN KALFUS, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain uew'a-nd useful Im provements in a Combined Cooler and Filter; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Heretofore Watercoolers with filters have been constructed with a water-drip around the outside, as vvell as disks for filtering purposes,
,in connection with filtering material, such being capable only for imperi'ectly cooling and fllteringthewater. Thedisadvantagesarising from the arrangement of the above devices are suchthat it is impracticable to cool and filter the water thoroughly without the use of felt or other fibrous material around the exterior ot the cooler, as itis upon this fibrous material the water is drawn up constantly by capillary attraction from the saucer that holds the vessel, and as it is Well known that in the tropical States, Where the climate is hot, the Water is brackish and very impure, and that it requires a iilter and cooler` that will more thoroughly cool and ilter the Water than has hitherto been done, and to also produce a vessel or jar for preserving and keeping cool meats, vegetables, dac., as well as to protect the contents of the jar from insects, which are very numerous in that and other sections of the country; and to this end my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby these defects are overcome and the Water cooled and ltered thoroughly without the use of ice.
The annexed sheet of drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my inven-4 tion, in which- Figure l represents a vertical sectional view of my improved cooler and filter. Fig. 2 is a `horizontal sectional View taken through the cover, Fig. 3 is also a horizontal vsectional view taken through the body of the' cooler, showing a plan view of disk. Fig. et isa similar view to Fig. 3, showing bearings and indentations. Fig. 5 is a sectional view in modi 'tains the filtered water.
tied form, and containing family jar or vessel. Fig. 6 is ahorizontal section of Fig. 5, showing bottom' bearings to support inside vessel.
Referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, A designates a vessel that forms the body of the cooler, having on its inner side lugs a, and at or near the bottom an opening, in which is placed a suitable faucet, a', and around the exterior of said vessel is Wrapped felt or any suitable porous or fibrous material, for a purpose vhereinafter mentioned.
B B indicate perforated disks, placed one above the other and within the vessel, which are supported in position by lugs a.
C indicates a tube open at both ends, and extending from the lower disk to near the top of the vessel, for exhausting air from the lower cliarnberor compartment from which the Water is drawn.
Thepositionsot'the disks are such that the vessel is divided into chambers or compartments, in the presentV instance three, b h b2, the upperone, b, containing filtering materialsuch as sand, gravel, Src-and the middle one, b', also containing charcoal or other good filtering material, While the lower chamber, b2, con- The inside ot this water-compartment b2 is glazed.
D designates the lid or cover, made hollow, forming a chamber, c, and provided with a hand-knob, c', having an opening, ci, forming a passage that communicates with said chamber o in the lid, and the same is further provided with small perforations d in its bottoni, near the edges thereof, and just outside ot' the wall of the vessel, inclined so as to jet Water against fibrous covering. This lid or cover is glazed on its bottom, and has an annulns thereon, as shown in Fig. l.
E represents a saucer or pan, in the bottom of which is placed a mat, d', of flexible material, and upon which the cooler rests when placed within the saucer.
Having described the differentparts of Which my cooler is constructed, l will now explain the operation.
The lid or cover is removed and the water is poured into the vessel. rihe Water then passes down through the sand and upper disk, through the perforatio is to the next chamber, thence through the charcoal and through the perforated disk B, and finally enters the lower on its passage through the same.
chamber, b2, the water being iltered or purified l mat for the reception of the water that drib- 'Ihe Water lid or cover is then filled with water through the opening c2, and through the small perforations in the bottom thereof the water dribbles of the vessel, which keeps the felt moist as fast as the water evaporates, and keeps the water in the vessel cool, the water dribbling over the brous material being received in the saucer.
Fig. 5 shows the Vessel or jar slightly modied in form, the same to be used for preserv-r ing and keeping cool meats, vegetables, &c., (in this instance the filtering materiall isdispensed with,) and has the lugs and wrapping, as shown in Fig. 1, and the outside vessel may be constructed of stone, eartherware, or any suitable material, and is to be placed Within a saucer and have a cover similar to the one above described. f
In the bottom of the vessel as modified I construct projections or ribs e, on which rests a sm aller vessel, e', constructed of metalsuch as tin, zinc, &c.-with shelves or half-perforated disks made of beech, maple, or cedar wood; or they may be made of metal, as may be found most convenient or practicable, form ing compartments, as shown in dotted lines, and having a suitable cover and" reversible handles secured to the vessel.
It will be observed that in placing the one vessel within the other the disks B B are re moved. The Water dribbling from the cover on the outer vessel keeps the inner vessel cool, while the projections in the bottom elevate the inner vessel and permit air to circulate around said vessel; also, itwill be observed that the disks can be easily'removed, when desired, by simply registering the openings e2 with the lugs of the vessel A. The mat in the saucer protects the latter and the vessel from injury when the vessel is carelessly seated within said saucer.
Having thus described my invention, wha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the water cooler and filter and drip pan or saucer, provided with a bles from the cover, and for feeding or supply- 5o ing water from said pan to the felt covering of the vessel, which is in contact with the vessel and Water, all substantially as set forth. upon and saturates the felt on outside cover I 2. In a water cooler and filter, the cover, constructed as described. provided with inclined 55 perforations, each inclined toward the wall of the vessel or cooler, the vessel being provided on its exterior with a covering of iibrous material, and the cover With an annulus on its under side lfor keeping the cover in position, sub- 6o stantially as described.
3. In a water cooler and filter, the combination, with the vessel provided with lugs and removable disks, said vessel being also provided with upwardly-projecting ribs and adapted 65 to receive an inner vessel when the disks are removed, substantially as described. v
4. A filtering-vessel for water and for conserving food, constructed with inner projecting lugs for the support of disks when used, and 7o when removed forcenterin g an inclosinglvessel, the filtering-vessel being glazed to the height of the' lower water-chamber, said vessel being' adapted to be Wrapped with brous material, and provided with a water-ehambered lid or `7 5 cover, which is also adapted to continuously moisten the wrapping, in combination with an outside water-receptacle, substantially as dcscribed.
5. A filtering and cooling vessel provided 8o with .disks or diaphragms, said disks having pieces cut out of their edges to permit passage over supportin g-lu gs, and to register with said lugs whenwithdrawn, the lugs being arranged to support the disks in position by 8'5 slightly turning the disks, in combination with a central air-tube which forms a handle .for raising the disks out of the vessel, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two 9o witnesses.
' SUTHERN KALFUs.
