UNITED STATES PAT T OFFICE.
FREDERICK V. FLETCHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GUARD FOR CLOSING THE H lNGE-CREVICES 0F DOORS.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,303, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed December 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom zt may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK V. FLETCH- ER, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in guards or screens for closing spaces between, above, and below the hinges of doors, of which the following is 2. Specification. I Y
My invention consists in a guard or screen of novel form, which can be applied to new or old doors, between and above and. below the when the door isajar or swung open, and which prevents drafts of air and precludes the possibility of any one peeping through said opening.
The construction of the guard or screen and the manner of applying it are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of adoor aud its frame with my improved guard or screen applied to them. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of one edge portion of the door and the jamb to which it is hinged, the door being open. Fig. 3 represents a corresponding section with a guard. or screen of modified form, the door being represented as closed; and Fig.4. represents a sectional view of the two parts of the guard or screen shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference designate corre-, sponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the door, and B the jamb, to which it is attached by hinges C. Obviously, when the door is ajar or swung open, a space of considerable width is formed between the door and jamb, above, below, and between the hinges C, and my guard or screen is employed toclose this space.
The guard or screen is composed of two parts or members, D D, which may be made of metal, wood, or other material. The two parts are made in sections adapted to fit between and above and below the hinges C. When the guard or screen is to he applied to new doors I may secure the parts to the edge of the door and the corresponding face of the jamb in the same way that the leaves of the hinges are secured, and as shown in Fig. 2; but when the guard or screen is .to he applied to doors which are already hung I may make the parts D D of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and secure them by nails or screws to the faces of the door and the jamb, as shown in Fig. 3. I may advantageously make one of the parts of the guard or screen with a rounded edge,a, like the edge of the part I), and
the other part, D, may in such case have its edge I; concave to fit snugly the rounded edge a. The rounded edge of the part D should be concentric with the pintles of the hinges C. The guard or screen, when eonstructedaccordingto myinvention, is sightlyand does not mar the appearanceof the door, and will prevent drafts when the door is open and render it impossible for any person to look through the of which has a rounded edge, a, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. The combination, with a door-jamb and a door hinged thereto, of the guard or screen composed of two members-attached to said jamb and door, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
FREDERICK V. FLETCHER.
