The arrangement of the letters G, and the number 200 as indicated on the ticket indicates the position of the columns in which these letters and the numbers will appear for all passes to the club house for official guests of the, Gulfstream Race Track of Florida. These letters are raised by any number of methods well known in the industry. If the pass were to the club house for an association guest, the column for the letter G and the number might be the same, but the column for the letter K would preferably be in another column to indicate that the pass was used by an association guest instead of by an ofiicial guest.

No. 289,911 filed May 24, 1952. As set "forth in the application for patent referred to,
in the entertainment field, such as sporting events, includinghorse racingmetes, and the like, it has been conventional to issue passes to a number of groups of attend ants. Record of the use of such passes for each day of each mete has been required for a number of reasons, as an instance, to provide against misuse of the passes 'by unauthorized persons, to prevent use of asingle'pass for'more than one admission, thereby in turn to detect whether such pass had been transferred to an unauthorized person to gain admission after the authorized user had been admitted, and to determine a list of the passes which are taxable and those which are'not taxable.
In the aforesaid patent application, it was sought to achieve the result by a manually operated mechanism.-
, With a view to simplifying that construction and reducing the mechanism to a minimum, the present invention aims to provide an improved ticket manipulating machine relying upon electric motive power in which a ticket, such as disclosed in the aforesaid patent application, constitutes the pass for use with such machine, (1) whereby the authorized passes can be readily detected both as to the mete and as to the date of the mete, (2) whereby an unauthorized repeat use of an authorized pass can be readily detected, that is, whereby all passes previously usedfor the day of the mete can quickly be detected and rejected if wrongfully presented for a secon-dadmis: sion, (3) whereby a record of the authorized passespre scnted for a single day of a mete can be effected and retained with the machine, ,(4) whereby a record can be effected on the pass itself to indicate that it has been used for the day of the mete, and (5) whereby one and the same pass can be used once for each of a number of different days of a particular mete, depending upon the setting of the machine.
Still furthermore, the'present invention aims to provide an improved electrically operated ticket manipulating machine for use with a ticket such as disclosed in the aforesaid patent application constituting a pass for use with such machine, which ticket has a first predetermined structural conformation thereon to correspond to the setting of the machine for a particular mete, a second structural conformation thereon to correspond to the setting of the machine for a particular day of the mete, and a third structural conformation thereon to cooperate with the machine to record such third conformation to be retained with the machine, and the machine (1') is provided with a first detecting means to cooperate with the first structural conformation on such pass to detect passes author ized for the mete, (2) is provided with a SC6Ildd8t0ting means to cooperate with the second structural conformation on the pass to detect passes authorized for the particular dayof the mete, (3) is provided' withafirst "record producing device for marking the authorized passes presented, (4)"is provided with a second record producing device cooperating with the third structural conformation on' the pass to reproduce the same or record it for retentionwith the machine, (5) in which the second detecting means canbe changed at the end of a day to serve for another day of'the mete and to cooperate with the second structural conformation of an authorized pass which-may orrnay not have been used for a previous 'day of the mete, and (6) in which the first detecting means of the machine can be changed for use with another mete to cooperate-withthe first predetermined structural conformationo'f the passes which have been conformed to correspond to such other mete. i
Still furthermore, the present invention aims to provide an electrically operated ticket manipulating machine in which'the ticket, such as disclosed in the aforesaid patent application, when received by the machine, if-an-acceptable ticket, at the beginning of a cycle (1) will actuate an electric switch to establish the circuit for an electric ITIOEQIiHS" a result of which the mechanism operatively connected with the motor will (2) complete the advance of the paper on which a record is to be printed 3) upon completing the advance of the paper, initiating the advance of acounter, (4) actuate a switch lock -to retain the switch in closed position and in turn release the switch lock to restore the switch to open position,'(5) at substantially the same time actuate a printing mechanism and subsequently restore the printing mechanism to initial at rest position, also (6) at substantially the same time initiate the actuation of a punch to perforate or mar the structural appearance of the ticket, complete such marring action and thereupon restore t'hepunch' to its at'rest position upon the completion of the cycle,(7)" complete the actuation of the counter after initiating t-he actuation of the punch, and (8) thereupon initiating the advance of the paper before releasing the switch lock and restoring the printing platen and punch to inoperative position at'the end of the cycle, leaving the completion'ofthe advance of the paper for the beginning of a succeeding cycle. i These'and other features, capabilities and advantages of the present invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustratedxin the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the two main frames separated from one another. 4

The operation of the machine when inserting a pass, detecting an authorized pass, producing a record on the pass so presented to indicate that it has been used for a day of a mete and for producing a record for retention with the machine, for convenience of description may be assumed to take place during a single cycle of operation. However, since the aforesaid functions performed by the machine, as well as others, overlap, the sequence of these several functions may vary, the functions themselves may vary, and the mechanical and electrical expedients for carrying out these several functions may vary, and some may actually be omitted without departing from the general spirit of the invention. The order in which the several mechanical and electrical expedients illustrated will be described is not intended to delineate their importance nor the preferred sequence, but is arbitrarily determined with a view to facilitating the description.
In a general way, the invention contemplates the use of a pass or ticket having data formed thereon in raised characters, the introduction of the pass into cooperation with a mechanism in the machine which will cooperate with the contour of the pass electrically to condition the machine for operation if it is an authorized pass, and the then ensuing actuation of the machine first to complete the advance of the record strip, paper as an instance, with the impression creating medium, such as a strip of carbon paper, thereupon initiating the actuation of a counter mechanism when used, thereupon actuating a lock to anchor the switch in closed position, and at about the same time after completion of the advance of the record strip, actuating the printing platen for an instantaneous printing impression and clearing the ticket for operation by the punch, thereupon initiating the actuation of the punch to change a part of the contour of the ticket to form a record on the same indicating that it has been used, thereupon completing the actuation of the counter, thereupon completing the punching operation and initiating the withdrawal of the punch and at the same time initiating the advance of the record strip, thereupon upon the completion of the cycle completing the restoration of the punch and printing platen to neutral position, and releasing the switch lock, and finally withdrawing the ticket from its impression producing relation with the printing platen.
The main frame The main frame consists essentially of a housing I having a top plate 2 resting on the upper edges of the same and secured to such upper edges. To this top plate 2 there is secured the main frame 3 having the transversely extending base plate or casting 4 from which extend four hangers, to wit, the front hangers 5 and the rear hangers 6, which are secured at their upper ends to the supporting plate 2. On the base plate or casting 4 adjacent the outer ends thereof, there are formed two raised runways 7 and 8 on which are slidably supported the cheek plates 9 and 10, respectively, of the auxiliary frame 11 which is connected at its front end by the cross bar 12 and a plurality of cross rods 13, 14, 15 and 16.
The main drive now to be described is mounted on the main frame 3.
The main drive Secured to the base plate 4 and suspended therefrom is the motor 17 which has drivingly connected thereto the sprocket wheel 18, which in turn is connected by the sprocket chain 19 to the sprocket wheel 20 fixed on the stub shaft 21 extending through one of the hangers 5 above the base plate 4 on the right hand side of the machine. This stub shaft 21 is journalled in one of the hangers 5 in alinement with the stub shaft 22 journalled in the other hanger S disposed on the left hand side of the machine. The stub shafts 21 and 22 have secured thereon between the two hangers 5 the eccentric 23. Between the eccentric 23 and the hanger 5 on the right hand side of the machine, there is fixedly secured the cam 24. In turn, between the eccentric 23 and the hanger 5 on the left hand side of the machine, there are disposed two earns 25 and 26, the cam 25 in the present instance being disposed between the eccentric 23 and the cam 26, and the cam 26 being disposed between the hanger 5 and the cam 25. To the left of the hanger 5 on the left hand side of the machine, there is fixedly mounted on the stub shaft 22 the eccentric 27.
To the outer face of the hanger 5 on the right hand side of the machine near the upper end thereof is secured the microswitch 28 having a downwardly extending projection 29 for engagement by the arm 30 having a roller 31 at its free end for engagement by the cam bracket 32 mounted on the shaft 33 extending through the two hangers 5, the cam bracket 32 having two cam faces, one 231 projecting relative to the other 232. The shaft 33 in the present instance has fixed thereto the short arms 34 which have fixed at their outer ends the cross rod 35. The shaft 33 in addition has secured thereto the arm 36 which has a pin 37 riding in the slot 38 of the link 39 connected at its lower end to the lever 40 pivotally connected at 41 to the hanger 5 at the left hand side of the machine, which lever 41 has a cam roller 42 thereon maintained in engagement with the periphery of the cam roller 26 by means of the spring 43 connecting the pin 44 at the very end of the lever 40 to the abutment 45 on the base plate 4. For normally maintaining the pin 37 of the arm 36 in engagement with the lower end of the slot 38, there is provided the spring 46 connected at one end to the pin 37 and at the other end to the abutment 47 fixed on the link 39. The cam 32 as aforesaid is fixed to the shaft 33. Consequently when the cross rod 35 is actuated to rock the shaft 33, it in turn will actuate the cam 32 to actuate the arm 30 to engage and actuate the projection 29 of the microswitch 28 and close the same. The cam 26 in cooperation with the lever 40, link 39 and arm 36, will maintain the cross rod 35 in actuated position during the operation of the machine so that if once actuated the cross rod 35 will remain in actuated position until a complete cycle of the machine has been completed.
The microswitch 28 is connected to the motor 17 so that when the road 35 is actuated the circuit to the motor 17 will be established and the current to the motor not interrupted until the projection 29 is again released, the cam 26, however, as aforesaid maintaining the cross rod 35 in actuated position and therefore the switch projection 29 in circuit establishing position of the motor, until a complete cycle of the machine has been completed.
The means for actuating the cross rod 35 will now be described consisting essentially of the ticket or pass 48, see Figs. 6 and 17. Since this actuating means depends upon the conforming of the contour of the ticket to the setting of the machine and to that extent the setting of the machine functions as a selector to select and accept the qualifying ticket, it will be referred to as the selecting mechanism.
The selecting mechanism In addition to the ticket 48, the selecting mechanism includes a mouth or opening 49 in the supporting plate 2, which mouth 49 is disposed in registration with the month 50 of the punching mechanism 51 hereinafter to bedescribed. Above "the month 50' of the punching mEcha'niSmSl there is' slidably mounted the bar 52 which also constitutes the back" of thestationaryplateri of the printing mechanism hereinafter to be described. This bar 52 in the present instance i s slidably supported on the supportingbars SSse'cured to the' inner' faces of the hangers '5. The front" ends of the bars 53 have extensions54 through which extend the-set screws 55 which arescrew threadedlfconr'reted to"-the bar 52 and by means of the nuts 56 on the set screws 55 engaging the front faces of the projections 54, the bar 52may'be adjusted to achieve a satisfactory priiiting'impression'location. To the bar 52,in"t'u'rn, there is secured 'a frame '57 having a cross bar 58 constituting the stationary platen at its upper end from which extend downwardly extending side bars 59 and 60; 7 To the rear faces'of the bars 59 and 60, see Figs. 6 and 7, there are secured the vertically extending members or plates 61 and 62 to form r a throat, the ihnerportions of whichare spaced from the cross bar 58'to form -slideways' for the ticket 48. At the lower ends'of the side bars 59 and60ther'e are secured attachments, such as the attachments 63 and 64 or Figs. 20'and 21. The attachment 63, see Fig. 20, has an upwardlycxtending proj'ectidnGSEid the present" instance, see Fig. 6, positioned in alinement with the slideway or guide formed between the plate 61 and the side bar 59. The attachment 64, see Fig. 6, is shown-as secured to the lower end of the bar. This"at tachment has a projection 66 which clears tlie slideway formed between the bar 60' and the plate 62." These projections 65 and 66 are provided to register with notches formed in the ticket 48. If the ticket'i's a qualifying ticket, that is', qualifies for the mete of a particular race, see Figs; 6 and 17, the ticket will have notches 67 and 68 formed therein which when inserted into "the mouth 49;between the bars 59, 60 and the plates 61, 62, the edge 69 of the ticket '48 being in advance, its notches or recesses 67 and 68 corresponding as they do to the position of the projections '65 and 66 of theattachments 63'and64when secured to the bars 59 and 60, see Fig. 6 the advance edge 69 of the ticket 48 will be in position orin condition to engage and actuate the projection 70, see Fig. 19, of the bracket 71, the plate portion 72 of which i is slidably mounted in the punch mechanism 51 and has rearwardly' extending arms 73, 74 provided with slots 75 .to" receiverecess 68 ofthe ticket 48, an attachment, such as the attachment 81 having" the slot 82 oould be provided in whichcase the" screw 83, see Fig. 6, would pass through the" slot'82iln turn, obviouslywith the'attachment" 79 shown" in Fig. '22, the screw 78 would pass through the slot 80. Obviously a set of attachments could be pro vided 'in which the spaces adjacent the projections, such asthe projection of the attachment -64and the projection 84 of the attachment 85, would vary relative to one another. The material of the ticket 48 must of course be fairly substantial and rigid so that it will not bend or be deflected when actuatingly engaging thepro jection 70; 'While cardboard, fibreboard'and the like have been found to give excellent results, obviously the ticket could also be composed of a plastic substance, a metal or the like, without departing from the general spirit of the invention. t i

Then the bracket ,71 would not be actuated and of course the switch 28 notclosed. In turn,
of course, if the recesses 67 and 68 would not register the cross r0d'35. Consequently, if the advance edge 69 of the ticket 48 is intact, that is, not recessedlwhere it registers with the projection 70 of the bracket'71, it will then be in position, the recesses 67 and-68 clearing the projections 65, 66 to depress the projection 70 constituting the movable obstruction and *thereby depress the bracket 71 in turn to actuate the cross rod .35. As soon as the cross rod 35 is so actuated by the ticket'48, it will actuate the cam32 to actuate the switch :button 29'to establish the circuit for the motor 17 to initiate a cycle of operation. -2,is' provided with teeth 87 along its lower edge to mesh with the teeth 88 of-the gear'89 fixed on the shaft 90 which extends through the bracket 91 secured to the outer face of the adjacent hanger-'5, and which shaft 90 also extends through the hanger '6 at the rear of the machine. On the end of theshaft 90 protruding from the rear face of the hange'ri6, there is fixed the toothed numbering wheel 92. The indications 99 on the dial or numbering wheel 92 are provided to aid the operator in locating the punching mechanism 51 according to the location of the recess 101) on the ticket 48, see Fig. 17, to be produced by the punch mechanism 51. In other words, if the ticket 48 or pass is to be authorized for the 28th day of the mete, see Fig. 17, then the dial 92 will be set to correspond to this day. In Fig. 13, the dial 92 is set to position the punch mechanism 51 for the 20th day of a mete.
The punch mechanism, see Figs. 3, and 6, consists essentially of a fixed die plate 101 secured to the cross bar 86 and having a female substantially square die 102 formed therein to receive the male die member 103 at the end of the lever 104 which is pivotally mounted on the bracket 105 also secured to the cross bar 86. The lower end of the lever 104 is bifurcated having the arms 106 and 107 secured to opposite sides of the eccentric 23. The eccentric 23 is so timed, see Fig. 25, that it will initiate the actuation of the male die 103 into the ticket 43 immediately after the cross rod 35 has been anchored in switch locking position. In Fig. 3 the lever 104 is shown in its neutral at rest position while in Fig. 5 it is shown in its final punch provoking position, and before being returned by the eccentric 23 to the neutral position shown in Fig. 3.
In some instances, in addition to providing a pass which will protect the racetrack as an instance from unlawful use of passes, that is, the use of a pass by an unauthorized user after the pass has once been used by an authorized user, it is also desirable to obtain a record of the number of passes that have been received at a particular gate or by a particular machine. For this purpose the counter unit 108 now to be described is provided.
The counter The counter mechanism 198 is mounted on the rear end of the hanger 6 which is at the left hand side of the machine, the operative mechanism of which is connected by the lever 169 and link 110 to the eccentric 27 mounted on the stub shaft 22, see Figs. 2 and 4. Since the stub shaft 22 will make one revolution in every cycle of the machine and the link 1111 is connected to the eccentric 27 secured to the stub shaft 22, the counter unit 103 will register a unit for each cycle of operation to indicate the admission or acceptance of each authorized pass, a cycle of operation corresponding to the acceptance of each authorized pass.
In addition to recording the number of authorized passes that have been accepted by the machine, in some instances it is also desirable to obtain a printed record of other matter. As an instance, at a race track, particularly in the United States, according to convention, there are a number of different kinds of passes, some of which entail the payment of a tax and some of which are tax free. It therefore is desirable to separate the records of taxable passes from the records of non-taxable passes to enable the comptroller to prepare the proper return to the tax authorities. it may also be desirable to keep a record of the number of officials or users of different classes. As an instance. there are some passes to the club house for officials, other passes to the club house for association guests, and then various types of passes to the grand stand, such as a horseman-special. In order to enable the comptroller to segregate and sort the various passes into groups, the printing mechanism now to be described is provided.
I I The printer The printer in the present instance consists essentially in providing raised characters, such as the letters G and K and the number 200 on the ticket 48, see Figs. 6 and 17. These letters and numbers are spaced in columns corresponding to the group to which the ticket belongs. The arrangement of the letters G, and the number 200 as indicated on the ticket indicates the position of the columns in which these letters and the numbers will appear for all passes to the club house for official guests of the, Gulfstream Race Track of Florida. These letters are raised by any number of methods well known in the industry. If the pass were to the club house for an association guest, the column for the letter G and the number might be the same, but the column for the letter K would preferably be in another column to indicate that the pass was used by an association guest instead of by an ofiicial guest. In turn, instead of the letter 6" and the column of it, a different letter might be provided to designate still another type of oflicial, while instead of the location of the column where the letter K appears in Fig. 17, a different location and a different letter would appear in the panel 111 of the ticket 411.
The raised condition of the characters 112 in the panel .111, to wit, the letters G, K, and the number 200, is relied upon to reproduce an impression of the same on a record strip.'
in the present instance the record strip consists of a strip of paper 113 extending from the roll 114 mounted on the roller 115 fixed on the shaft 116 journalled in the arms 117 and 118, see Figs. 1 and 3, which arms 117 and 118 are connected to one another by the cross rod 119 and pivoted at their upper ends on the cross rod 16 supported in the cheek plates 9 and 10 of the auxiliary frame 11. In the normal position the arms 117 and 118 rest upon the cross rod 120 fixed to the extensions 121 extending rearwardly from the plates 122 which in turn extend forwardly from the cross bar 12. Above the cross rod 119 there is journalled the shaft 123 on which is mounted the spool 124 supporting the roll 125 of carbon paper with the impression producing surface 126 on the inner face of the carbon strip 127. The carbon strip 127 with the impression producing face 126 facing the paper strip 113 passes over the cross rod 16, and then over the cross rod 14 and down under the cross rod 15. The paper strip 113 after leaving the roll 11 i engages the outer face of the roll 125 of carbon strip and then engages the impression provoking face 126 of the carbon strip 127 when it reaches the rod 116 and from there on the carbon strip 127 and paper strip 113 continue together over the cross rod 14 and under the cross rod 15, and then over the cross rod 128 and over the roller 129 down past the tie rod 130 to and between the feed rollers 131 and 132 to be pulled by them across the ticket 48 between the cross rods 14 and 15.
The cross rod 128 is fixed and supported in the cheek plates 9 and 10 of the auxiliary frame 11. The shaft 133 of the roller .129 is journalled in the upper arms 134 of the plates 122 and the feed rollers 131 and 132 in turn are fixed on the shafts 135 and 136, respectively, the shaft 135 being journalled in the plate 122 and the shaft 136 being journalled in the ends of the arms 121 slidably mounted in the plates 122 and connected to one another by the cross rod 120. On the ends of the shafts 135 and 136 extending to the left of the left hand plate 122, there are fixed the gears 140 and 141, respectively, maintained in mesh with one another by the springs 142 and 143 extending from the cross rod 120 to the abutments 144 and-145 mounted on the plates 122. The springs 142 and 143 thus not only maintain the gears 141i and 141 in mesh with one another, but also maintain the feed rollers 131 and 132 in feeding engagement with the paper strip 113 and carbon strip 1'27. The shaft 136 extends beyond the right hand side of the plate 122 at the right and has mounted thereon the ratchet wheel 146, sec Fi 12, for engagement by the pawl 147 journalled on the upper end of the bracket 148 pivotally connected to the link 14-9 by the pin 159, which link 149 in turn is connected to the lever 151 by the pin 152, which lever 151 is journalied on the shaft 153 and is provided with a cam roller 15% in engagement With the cam 24. The pawl 147 is resiliently maintained in engagement with the ratchet wheel 146 by the spring mounted on the bracket 14-8. The cam roller 154 of the lever 151 in turn is resiliently maintained in engagement with the cam 24 by the spring 156 which is connected at its upperend to the cross rod 116. The cam 24 is timed so that it will initiate the advance of the paper at about the end of the second third of the cycle, not completing the advance at the end of the cycle and consequently the'advance of the paper strip will not be completed until about one-fourth of the new cycle has been completed.
After the advance of the paper and carbon strips has been completed, then in the cycle 'of operation, the movable printing platen 157 will be actuated by a hammer blow or impact on the outer face of the carbon strip 127 between thecross rods 14 and 15 in alinement with the stationary platen 587 The movable platen 157 is formed at the upper ends of the arms 158 and 159 journalled on the shaft 153; The arms153 and 159 are connected to one another by the cross rod 160 which in the present instance extends beyond the outer face of the arm 159 and hasCDnnected thereto the upper free end of the impact spring 161 which is wrapped a'roundtbe shaft 153 and has its other end tensed against the abutment 162. Extending from the outer face of the arm 159 is the braeket portion 163 at the outer end of which is formed the cam roller 164 maintained inengagement with the cam 25 by the impact spring 161. While excellent results have been achieved by the seduence of actuation here depicted, obviously theymay be varied without departing from the general spirit of the invention, I nth e sequence depicted at the beginning of the cycle .ofthe machine, the ticket 48 at a point in the radial line 170 actuates the cross rod 35 to actuate .the projection 29 to close the microswitch 28, in turn ,to establish the electric circuit in the motor 417, thereupon after the ,cycle determined by the rotation of the shaft 21 has completed'about one-third of its angular motion, at about the point 172 on the circle 165, the cam 26 will first actuate the lever 40, link 39 and arm 36 to maintain the cross rod 35 in depressed position and-finallyat the end of :the cycle 1at about the point on the radial line 170 completed, plotted as occurring at about on the circle the cam 26 will permit the lever 40 and therewith the cross rod 35 to bereturned to neutral position. I claim:
1. In a ticket manipulating machine for receiving anthorized tickets and recording the data formed thereon in raised characters, the combination of a main frame, a guide secured in said main frame for receiving and supporting an authorized ticket having a predetermined intact leading edge portion, a movable obstruction in said main frame and in the path of movement of said intact leading edge portion to be actuated by the same,
a main drive in said main frame, a fixed platen in said 7 main frame adjacent one side of the guide, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted in said main frame, a movable platen operatively mounted in said auxiliary frame adjacent the other side of the guide, an actuator for said movable platen mounted in said auxiliary frame, control means operatively connected to said main drive cooperating with said actuator to effect the actuation of said movable platen by said actuator, a recording medium mounted in said auxiliary frame interposed between the raised characters on the ticket and the movable platen to enable the actuation of said main drive to actuate said control means in turn to enable said actuator to actuate the movable platen to impinge the recording medium between the raised characters on the ticket and the movable platen to produce a record of the raised characters, an electric motor mounted in said main frame drivingly connected to said main drive, an electric circuit including an electric switch operatively connected to said motor, and means mounted in said main frame operatively connecting said movable obstruction to said switch to close said switch in turn to establish the current in said motor when said movable obstruction is actuated by said intact leading edge portion to operate said main drive.
2. In a ticket manipulating machine for receiving anthorized tickets and recording the data formed thereon in raised characters, the combination of a main frame, a guide secured in said main frame for receiving and supporting an authorized ticket having a predetermined intact leading edge portion, a movable obstruction in said main frame and in the path of movement of said intact leading edge portion to be actuated by the same, a main drive in said main frame, a fixed platen in said main frame adjacent one side of the guide and engaging one side of the ticket, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted in said main frame, a movable platen operatively mounted in said auxiliary frame adjacent the other side of the guide to cooperate with said fixed platen, an actuator for said movable platen mounted in said auxiliary frame, control means operatively connected to said main drive cooperating With said actuator to effect the actuation of said movable platen by said actuator, a recording medium mounted in said auxiliary frame interposed between the raised characters on the ticket and the movable platen to enable the actuation of said main drive to actuate said control means in turn to enable said actuator to actuate the movable platen to impinge the recording medium between the raised characters on the ticket and the movable platen to produce a record of the raised characters, an electric motor mounted in said main frame drivingly connected to said main drive, an electric circuit including an electric switch operatively connected to said motor, and means mounted in said main frame operatively connecting said movable obstruction to said switch to close said switch in turn to establish the current in said motor when said movable obstruction is actuated by said intact leading edge portion to operate said main drive.
3. In an admission ticket manipulating machine, the combination of an authorized ticket having raised characters on the face thereof and a leading edge, said edge having a predetermined intact portion, a main frame, a guide in said main frame for receiving said ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending therefrom to form a throat, an obstruction extending into said throat, said obstruction being mounted in said main frame in a selected position in the path of movement of said intact edge portion, said obstruction when positioned in said selected position being movable into a second position upon engagement by said intact portion and the movement of the ticket to its fully in serted position, a drive shaft operatively mounted in said main frame, a cam on said drive shaft, a fixed platen mounted in said main frame adjacent one face of the ticket when inserted in said guide, an electric motor mounted in said main frame drivingly connected to said drive shaft, an electric circuit including an electric switch operativeiy connected to said motor, a cam bracket pivotally mounted in said main frame and operatively connecting said obstruction to said switch to close said switch in turn to establish the current in said motor when said obstruction is actuated by said intact portion, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted in said main frame, a movable platen operatively mounted in said auxiliary frame adjacent the other side of the ticket, an actuator operatively connected to said movable platen and mounted in said auxiliary frame including a lever and a cam roller on said lever in engagement with said cam when said auxiliary frame is positioned in said main frame, a recording medium mounted in said auxiliary frame interposed between the raised characters on said ticket and the movable platen to enable the actuation of said drive shaft when actuating said cam in turn to actuate said lever to release said actuator to actuate the movable platen to impinge the recording medium between the raised characters on the ticket and the movable platen to roduce a record of the raised characters, said fixed platen backing up said ticket during the actuation of said movable platen.
4. The combination as set forth in claim 3 in which said switch has a contact making projection and said cam bracket has a cam face operatively associated with said projection to actuate said projection to close said switch when said movable obstruction is actuated.
5. In an admission ticket manipulating machine, the combination of an authorized ticket having a leading edge, said edge having a predetermined intact portion, a frame, a guide in said frame for receiving said ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending therefrom to form a throat, an obstruction extending into said throat, said obstruction being mounted in said frame in a selected position in the path of movement of said intact portion, said obstruction when positioned in said selected position being movable into a second position upon engagement by said intact edge portion and the movement of the ticket to its fully inserted position, a drive shaft operatively mounted in said frame, an eccentric on said drive shaft, a punch lever pivotally mounted in said frame in operative engagement with said eccentric to be actuated thereby, a punch head on said lever adjacent the intact portion of the ticket in said guide, an electric motor mounted in said frame and drivingly connected to said drive shaft, an electric circuit including an electric switch operatively connected to said motor, said switch having a contact making projection, a cam bracket pivotally mounted in said frame operatively connected to said movable obstruction, said cam bracket having a cam face actuating said projection to close said switch in turn to establish the current to said motor when said movable obstruction is actuated by said intact portion, a cam on said drive shaft, and a linkage operatively connecting said cam to said cam bracket, said drive shaft when actuated actuating said eccentric to actuate said punch head to punch out the intact portion of said ticket and also actuating said cam to actuate said cam bracket and therewith to actuate and anchor said obstruction out of the path of movement of said punch head during a cycle of operation of the drive shaft.
6. In an admission ticket manipulating machine, the combination of an authorized ticket having a leading edge, said edge having a predetermined intact portion, a frame, a guide in said frame for receiving said ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending therefrom to form a throat, an obstruction ex tending into said throat, said obstruction being mounted in said frame in a selected position in the path of movement of said intact portion, said obstruction when positioned in said selected position being movable into a second position upon engagement by said intact edge portion and the movement of the ticket to its fully inserted position, a drive shaft operatively mounted in said frame, an electric motor mounted in said frame and drivingly connected to said drive shaft, an electric circuit connecting an electric switch operatively connected to said motor, said switch having a contact making projection, a cam bracket pivotally mounted in said frame operatively connected to said obstruction, said cam bracket having a cam face actuating said projection to close said switch in turn to establish the current to said motor when said obstruction is actuated by said intact portion, a cam on said drive shaft, a linkage operatively connecting said cam to said cam bracket, and a recording device operatively connected to said drive shaft, said drive shaft when actuated, actuating said cam to actuate said bracket and therewith actuate and anchor said obstruction during a cycle of operation of said drive shaft.
7. The combination as set forth in claim 6 in which said recording device includes a counter and a linkage operatively connecting said counter to said drive shaft.
8. The combination as set forth in claim 6 in which said recording device includes a punch head for punching out said intact portion, and an eccentric operatively connects said drive shaft to said punch head.
9. The combination as set forth in claim 6 in which said recording device includes a punch head for punching out said intact portion, a counter for recording the number of tickets passed through the machine, an eccentric operatively connecting said drive shaft to said punch head, and a linkage operatively connecting said drive shaft to said counter.
10. In an admission ticket manipulating machine, the combination of an authorized ticket having a leading edge, said edge having a predetermined intact portion, a main frame, a guide in said main frame for receiving said ticket into a fully inserted position, said guide having two members extending therefrom to form a throat, an obstruction extending into said throat, said obstruction being mounted in said main frame in a selected position in the path of movement of said intact edge portion, said ohstruction when positioned in said selected position being movable into a second position upon engagement by said intact portion and the movement of the ticket to its fully inserted position, a drive shaft operatively mounted in said main frame, a cam on said drive shaft, an electric motor mounted in said main frame drivingly connected to said drive shaft, an electric circuit including art electric switch operatively connected to said motor, a cam bracket pivotally mounted in said main frame operatively connecting said obstruction to said switch to close said switch in turn to establish the current in said motor when said obstruction is actuated by said intact portion, an auxiliary frame slidably mounted in said main frame, a recording device mounted in said auxiliary frame, and an actuator operatively connected to said recording device and mounted in said auxiliary frame including a lever and a cam lever on said lever in engagement with said cam to release said actuator to actuate said recording device when said auxiliary frame is positioned in said main frame.
11. The combination as set forth in claim 10 in which said ticket has raised characters and said recording device includes a movable platen operatively connected to said actuator, and a recording medium interposed between the raised characters of the ticket and the movable platen to enable the actuation of said movable platen to impinge the recording medium between said raised characters and the movable platen to produce a record of the raised characters.
12. The combination as set forth in claim 10 in which said ticket has raised characters, said recording device includes a movable platen and a feed for a paper strip, said movable platen being operatively connected to said actuator, a recording medium connecting a strip of paper interposed between the raised characters and the movable platen to enable the actuating of said movable platen to impinge the recording medium between the raised characters and the movable platen to produce a record of the raised characters, a second cam on said drive shaft, and a second actuator operatively connected to said feed mounted in said auxiliary frame including a second lever and a second cam roller on said second lever in engagement with said second cam to actuate said feed when said auxiliary frame is positioned in said main frame.
